A ski instructor sees a bear appear on the slope and stops all skiers descending in that direction.
What happened next you will not believe...!
"So as a romanian, I can give a few translations to the people watching the video:
1. The guy was not mocking or provoking the bear, he was a ski instructor attending a class and he kept telling him to go to the forest and was trying to keep the people in the group from panicking. He kept calling the bear cute :)
2. The reason he made the bear chase him was to keep him away from the other people, in interviews he said this has happened before (in other words he wanted to provoke the chase instinct of the bear on purpose, so it goes after him instead of a child or something)
3. He was warning people as he was going down the slope that theres a bear in order for them to leave"

  • For those who don't understand romanian. I know that slope. I'm always eyes open for bears. From the video, we learn he is a ski instructor. And he was on his way down to his school kids. He first tried to talk the bear away from the slope. Because he had tourists (skiiers) behind. Then, the bear, out of the blue sky tried to chase him. For no reason, that's why you can never know what a bear does. So this man played the bear's game to exhauste it. When he saw that there are other tourists downhill. He stopped. Warn them to go fast downhill because there is a bear. Finally, he succeeded to make the animal go in to the forest. He laughs all the time because he is maybe from that region, and he is used with these animals. So, he is a kind of hero.

    • Thanks for those explanations and appreciations, I'm not from the area, but I often go to different parts depending on where I have hours. We were all lucky that that bear was not aggressive, but it is still a wild bear, and you never know how it will react. The idea was not to be fed by someone, as I think has happened in the past, and to return to the forest from where it came. It took some time, with a continuous change of strategy depending on how the situation evolved, but I succeeded in the end. Only good, and no similar meetings with anyone!

    • @@adi99fox You likely saved several people, a bear's life and your video is bringing awareness, preventing these things happening to many others, thank you. 🙏 I'm not so sure about the aggressive part though, when it looks like he's being playful (e.g. 2:22), it may be a deceitful move for going straight into attack mode if you got close enough... 😋🐻

  • Wow, this guy is the kind of ski instructor I would sign up with. For those who didn’t understood the situation: He lured the bear away from his students into the forest. He did it by trusting his ability on ski’s, stopped repeatedly to keep the bear on his trail and get him tired, sufficiently tired so that he gives up on chasing people and get back in the forest. Now that is a brave an humane approach. If you have the balls to do it. He obviously knew the trail the speeds he can get on that section, he was confident in his ability as a skier, and did the right thing. 👏👏👏

    • @@--...-.-.-...- People adapt to situations, life is not Hollywood or PC Games, you don’t replace one thing and speculate same behavior different outcome. Had the situation been different, he would have reacted differently, as all men do. And as far as the bear being playful, he was playful and skinny which means hungry. If he weighted more, he would have been hibernating by now. Also bears play with their food, play to investigate if something or someone is food, playfulnesses is how animals and humans discover the world. Make no mistake, we are food for them, not the other way around.

The GROUP is supposed to “look tall” (wave arms up high) and make as much noise as you can with your voice and any thing you have on you. This case may be smack your skis with the tips of your poles etc. neither he or anybody in the group did any of that. And if this happened before with this “ski instructor” maybe he’s just practicing to be a professional bear runner. The fact that he “led” the bear away from the group makes no sense. *You want to drive the bear away from you - back into the forest * he led the bear down the hill towards more skiers and directly in the path of his own students. Guys a dip wad

  • This is incredible, absolutely amazing. The instructor is a calm hero, gets the bear away from all the other skier's at the top of the slope, and stops when he encounters people on his way down, to give them time to ski all the way down and put some distance between themselves and the bear. All this while filming perfectly, and laughing and being calm throughout the entire interaction. My dad studied to in Romania late 1970s/early 1980s, and he says he saw a bear while skiing there too. Beautiful country he says. From the video here, I have to agree.

  • ENGLISH translation. We have in this video a Romanian ski instructor (not Russian, as many people keep dreaming...) Looks like a lot of people missunderstood what happened in this video, and they think the instructor provoked the bear. I invite them to read this translation. The ski instructor's name is Adrian Stoica, this is his channel. During the whole video, he's been skiing backwards (hat off...) so this way he recorded the entire chase. 0:01 The instructor to the bear: "Hey you, grandpa' bear, get away from here... we've got work to do." 0:07 To the people: "Stop! Stop! Stop! Stay were you are, just a little bit. Let him pass by." 0:14 To the bear: "Hey brother! Come on, come on, come on..." 0:16 A woman in the background: "And now...? What we're gonna do?" 0:19 The instructor to the woman: "We'll let him pass by. You don't put yourself in his way." 0:28 A man in the background: "Stop! Stop! Stop!" 0:30 The instructor to the bear: "Come on, beat it to the valley, slowly." 0:35 The instructor to the people: "And after that, the group. Everyone stopped, right?" 0:39 A man: "Right." 0:42 The instructor to the group: "Come on... let's make some noise, so he will go. Make a little bit of noise." 0:53 To the bear: Hey partner... beat it. We are too many here, and you are alone. Come on, come on, come on... huo! Huo! Huo!" 1:04 To the people: "Look... what a cute face he has! He doesn't care..." 1:10 To the bear: "My friend, come on... don't come closer cause we are not such good friends. Come on... come on... Go to the woods, to the woods... To the woods, to the woods, to the woods... forget about us, leave us. Come on, come on..." 1:38 "Oh... bravo! Very nice of you!" (He loughs). 1:45 "Are you kidding me...? You're not allowed here. You're not allowed here." 1:57 "I know you're cute, but... everyone with his own business." 2:11 "Huoi! You're not allowed here. You're not allowed here. Don't you understand you're not allowed...? Go to your woods.... I know you want something, but I don't have anything to give you." 2:24 A man in the background: "Doesn't anybody have food on...?" 2:29 The instructor to the bear: "You are adorable." 2:34 To the people: "So what now...? What are we going to do with him here?" 2:35 A man to the instructor: "Leave the skies there, and come here." 2:37 The instructor: "No. Because I have to go down slope to the students." 2:41 To the bear: "You're not allowed here! Not allowed! Not allowed!" 2:50 "That's it." 2:51 To the bear: "Bye, little bear! Come after me... huol!" 3:01 "Let's make a contest... come after me!" (He starts the race.) 3:06 He turns 180 degrees and continues to ski backwards during the whole race, while filming the bear and talking to him: "Come on, dear, come on..." 3:14 "You're a light-headed! I suggest you to go to the woods... You are adorable!" 3:28 "Little bear, little bear..." 3:44 "You keep running, keep running, but there's nothing you can do about it." 3:51 "You are there, I'm here..." 3:58 "I'm gone dear, cause I've got classes to do. Bye! And we don't stay to socialise for too long..." 4:11 "You are so cute! Bye...!" 4:21 To another group: "Watch out! The bear is coming. Come on, take it easy and leave. All of you." 4:48 To the bear: "Come on, come on, come on... We'll take another ride..." 5:05 He loughs... To the bear: "Do you still can run...? Can you?" 5:15 To the group: "Everybody must go to the valley." 5:23 To the group: "You go forward, I'll stop him, no problem. There are a few more left up the slope." 5:30 A man: "What? Bears...?" 5:32 The instructor: "No... a group of tourists. Come on... they are gone to the valley." 5:43 "Today we won't teach ski lessons anymore." 5:46 To the bear: "Did you press the breaks, dear...? You've got tired, didn't you...?" 5:57 "Come on.... go to the woods, cause otherwise they will pick you up and relocate you, or who knows what's gonna happen to you... Yeah." 6:17 "You're nice, you're cute, but we don't socialise. Everyone goes on his own territory." 6:26 "And.... regarding food, I haven't had any to give you, so... maybe some ski lessons." 6:37 To the viewers: "So that's it with this recording... I made this video with the bear for you, so far you only had the one with the deer..." 6:46 To somebody: "Watch out! He's here..." 7:00 To the bear: "Hey you! Light-headed..." 7:03 To the people: "He's here, on this side. You should come all together..." 7:15 "He's gone into the woods. He's gone. It's OK now." 7:26 "Let's not stay close to the woods, so he won't show up on our way... little monkey!" 7:38 "Come on, come on!"

    • Yes, the bear was a juvenile. I have encountered a juvenile grizzly while doing trail maintenance…the bear ran back a few metres and stopped…I stood my ground and then backed away very slowly. There are numerous bear encounters in the Rocky Mountains…very few attacks…and even fewer fatalities. When researching fatalities in Montana, it was reported that many were during hunting season. Hunters leave gut piles from a deer or moose kill…the bears easily find the meal and defend the nearby territory. One striking incidence, a party of three hunters were killed at their camp…three rifles were founded nearby loaded and not discharged. Faster than greased lightning!!! Bear attacks and fatalities are often just bad luck…chance encounters. Sometimes it is about not being informed…tents ripped apart because food was stored in or near a tent. Again in Montana …two solo female backcountry backpackers were killed in their tents on the same day…miles apart…not by the same bear. On one occasion, I watched a father, with a daughter in the front of a canoe, paddle up to within 10 metres of a mature adult grizzly on the shoreline. #*£¥ ing stupid! These bears leave paw prints the size of dinner plates …and rip huge divots out of the soil with one swipe when dining on rodents. I won’t judge this skier, but even a friendly dog in an off leash area will chase joggers. If you want to take on the persona of being ‘prey’, and initiate the predatory instincts of a predator…then run.

    • That bear was not just curious. When the bear was laying down in the snow, next to the edge of the slope, it was actually behaving just like a bear on a hunt would do. I.e. the bear tried to fool the prey by looking uninterested, but at the same time slowly advancing tactically, closer and closer. So, the ski instructor would have been the next meal for the bear, had he stayed put instead of skiing down the slope. I have seen this behavior with polar bears several times before, exactly the same tactic (to play uninterested but slowly advance until within reach or the prey). I mean, the bear must have been really hungry. It wouldn't have run for so long otherwise. Bears are no maraton runners you know. Nor are they downhill skiers.

  • For those who think they understand whether the bear was aggressive, or playful, etc. Try watching more videos of bear encounters. Observe the bear's nature and see if you can decode the intent right from the initial frames of the video. I've seen many. Some bears climb into a guy's tree stand - seems distracted and non-aggressive, then suddenly does a test nip of his leg. Everything you think you know about reading an animal's intentions is from domestic animals. They have existed with humans for centuries. Even dogs have developed facial muscles for communicating their emotions which are absent from wolves. We can't take cues from what we think we know in the domestic animal context. Wild animals don't fit into this. They don't communicate their intentions. They don't anticipate what could happen next as they get closer to another creature - even aside from human encounters. The behaviour can flip in one second.

Although it is true that it’s never ok to feed the bears and yes, he « could » be hungry he demonstrates zéro agression, quite the contrary, only repeated « requests » to play, that would frighten the pants off most tourists. The ski instructor is HIGHLY professional, luring the bear away from the tourists (who all followed anyway, not too far behind) and even skiing backwards WHILE FILMING!!! So a BIG hero medal to the ski instructor for his professionalism (and backwards-skiing ability) and for succeeding at taking the bear away from the tourists. I see a young adult human-familiarized bear, displaying a curious opportunistic hunting behavior. There is absolutely nothing playful about this behavior. In this case you must hold your ground. If you run the bears kill instinct will be triggered as seen in the video. The man begins holding his ground. Then he must decide if he waits for the situation to escalate , possibly with the bears attention moving to other people upslope, or he can ski away, drawing the bear after him. I think he took the later decision a little early, but it was probably the best outcome. The guy was obviously trying to draw the bear away from others and in this he was successful but was also lucky at several points. Personally I would have removed my skis to use as a weapon, moved uphill slowly into the larger groups and had everyone make as much noise as possible and most likely the bear would have moved on long enough for help to come.

    • You described the situation perfectly, only the people in the back were quite scattered, and I had no way to turn my head (I was focused only on the bear approaching) to coordinate them to form a compact group, they did not loud noise even when I told them, so that when I saw that the bear is quite calm, and tends to follow me, plus not to be neglected that he responded defensively to my actions to stop him from approaching me, having the advantage that I ski quite well and more I had descended in the last half hour a few times the very well prepared pist, I chose to run it to get tired and retire to the forest then ..., but it took a while to succeed :) So, thank you for understand the situation!

The two friends that she had been with, who stayed together, were fine. Safety in numbers, based on the stats I've seen. Stay together.

  • As you see some of the snow is melted between the trees, that means was warmer than usual and the bear ( possibly 3 years old) wake up. This is a brown bear around 120kg ,250lbs. Looks small and skinny beacuse has been in hibernation from november past year. The cold weather came early that year. 2020. Looks like the bear has been feed by the tourist, possibly, before during the summertime. Bears are afraid of humans in most condition and keep away. Non aggresive behavior and the movement and lenght of time spent facing the people, can be interpreted also as begging for food. Looks like, by the words of the ski instructor, that the bear has followed people before and he decided to make it run after him. He didn't provoke it or aggravated the situation. He did the best for the safety of all the people on the ski slope and the bear.

His "leading away" is done through either provocation of the bear's hunter instinct or making it think the man's got food (or IS food). To provoke a predator which can kill or maim you is stupid in itself and irresponsible to other people who'll meet this bear later. Next time the bear will remember the chase and will be more eager for it.
