    • They wrote about it. Well not the first people. But Lewis and Clark wrote about the Indians telling them about these monsters in the mountains and Lewis and Clark disregarded it because they had guns. The Indians told them that even in hunting parties of ten they usually will struggle to kill one and often lose men themselves. Lewis and Clark found out shortly after and wrote that the brown ones (grizzly) were even worse than the Indians had said and were difficult to kill with guns. One particularly large male they finally killed had 10 musket balls found in its body including in its lungs when it finally went down after still managing to swim across the river before falling down.

    • There's a story from Quite Interesting (British panel show that's a "pub quiz from hell" with comedians; well-researched, very amusing, basically all available on YT) about a big show in the Old West where someone got the bright idea to pit a lion against a bear. "Apex predators of two continents collide" was the selling-point, and they sold hard in the weeks and months it took to get a lion to the American West. When the day finally came, the lion roared ferociously, pounced... and was summarily dispatched as a single blow from the bear's paw crushed its skull. Turns out lions don't meet many opponents with that kind of raw power, but bears do. Bears also share an alarming number of the evolutionary adaptations that make humans so dominant, including relative brain size. There was a sci-fi story some time back called "Bears Discover Fire"; IIRC, didn't turn out great for us.

      @dsrguru@dsrguru2 жыл бұрын
    • @@dsrguru I agree they grapple with their siblings, but that practice is a natural ability, they are not fighting with a well-developed science behind the martial art it is purely instinctive which is the point where I'm getting at. • @Michol 0515 A grizzly bear (ursus arctos horribilis) is a subspecies of the brown bear (ursus arctos) that has spread over much of the Northern Hemisphere. To confuse the situation, other major subspecies include the Kodiak bear (ursus arctos middendorffi), Eurasian brown bear (ursus arctos arctos), the ussuri bear (Ursus arctos lasiotus), the Kamchatka bear (Ursus arctos beringianus). There are a few other subspecies, some extant, others extinct. They are all the same species, just as all humans, despite their “race” (subspecies), are homo sapiens with just about identical morphology and potential.
