Former CIA Director John Brennan tells Andrea Mitchell that he hopes if Putin got close to using nuclear weapons that there would be people within the Kremlin who would stop him. “I do hope that there will be sensible people, including in the Kremlin, that will stop Putin from doing something like that, which will ensure the destruction, I think, of the Russian state and certainly of the current Russian leadership,” says Brennan. » Subscribe to MSNBC: on.msnbc.com/SubscribeTomsnbc

It is sad to see that this threat still exists and this time Russia is run by an incompetent madman who is more inherently dangerous than the Soviet Union was. He has miscalculated at every turn and needs to be stopped before he makes the ultimate miscalculation. But from WWII, up through the 90s, they were commonly tested all over the world, whether that be in the Marshall Island, Siberia, or in the middle of the Indian Ocean. • @@paulwheeler6609 I can't find anything on line on the specifics of the expected fallout, but the whole point of the types of weapons being discussed (tactical nuclear weapons) is that they can be used on the battlefield with minimal effect on friendly soldiers. This is achieved through the design of the weapons which aim to use up as much of the fissile material as possible with the products being as benign as possible. Even the strategic bombs are as clean as reasonable and have a much lower yield now than even 30 years ago. The effects from fallout from Chernobyl were magnitudes worse than the fallout effect from the relatively dirty bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the effects on Russia was measurable only at the theoretical level.

He is a small, lonely man with very few if any friends, and will be remembered as a tragic, morally bankrupt leader, at best. Yet, Putin is very happy: finally his dreams have become true.. the whole world is talking about him, and every word he utters is weighed like gold for meaning and intention. Every threat he makes, we all sit up and listen. Oh you can be 100% certain: Putin is extremely happy about the situation.

  • We need administration change in Russia, but in an orderly fashion. We can not have chaos in a country that has 5,800 nuclear weapons. Losing accountability of tactical NUCs would be welcomed by terrorist organizations and pose a real threat to the world.

  • “Mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the Forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty to throw off such Government and to provide new Guards for their future Security.” -The U. S. Declaration of Independence, 1776.

    • I just read an article on it. You are 100% correct. This isn't a coincidence. No way would Putin conscript him to work in intelligence, but he'll send him to the front lines within a week to start training their troops. And I know dozens of veterans who wanted to volunteer with the Foreign Legion, so to fight for Ukraine. Some might commit to going if they find out that they might get a piece of Snowden.

  • “O sir, we should have fine times, indeed, if, to punish tyrants, it were only sufficient to assemble the people! Your arms, wherewith you could defend yourselves, are gone; and you have no longer an aristrocratical, no longer a democratical spirit. Did you ever read of any revolution in a nation, brought about by the punishment of those in power, inflicted by those who had no power at all?” Patrick Henry, Speech in the Virginia Ratifying Convention, June 5, 1788

    • Perhaps the most alarming revelation to emerge from the new Bush biography is the elder man’s recollection that while Cheney had been his defence secretary, he had commissioned a study on how many tactical nuclear weapons would be needed to eliminate a division of Saddam Hussein’s Republican Guard.

    • It is interesting that Snowden has been called both a traitor and a hero by the American population. Something to consider. Fair warning, when you live in a society where you condone state secrecy and lack of transparency, you also condone the slippery slope to abuses to your freedom of speech and expression. Beware the rhetoric you spout lest you look like the enemy you fight against. After all, the erosion of rule of law is what made the atrocities that are happening in Ukraine possible. Sic semper tyrannis.
