Buying a new bumper at a low price.
This is a rear bumper for a 2003 Odyssey. I called local dealers and was quoted $450. I bought this one for $315 shipped from rockauto.com and it showed up in 4 days. Another source for inexpensive bumpers is ebay.
Step 1: Bumper prep:
Your bumper will arrive with a black primer already applied, but it tends to be rough and have a few flaws so you'll first want to wetsand the whole piece with 600 grit sandpaper.
Now wipe down the entire bumper with wax and grease remover. Apply wet with towel # 1, then dry with separate towel.
Step 2: Apply Basecoat
Shake your can for about a minute. Spray from a distance of about 10 to 12 inches. Be sure to spray very light coats so you don't get a run. Try to apply your paint so each pass overlaps the previous by 50 %. If you're spraying silver or gold, it's important that you also apply some light coats in a vertical pattern so you don't see "tiger striping."
Wait 15 Min.
Check that your paint is dry, and give one gentle wipe with a lint-free towel to remove dust.
Step 3: Apply Clearcoat
Spray your clear coat form a distance of about 10 to 12 inches. Apply multiple thin coats. Frequently look closely at the bumper to check that you haven't missed any spots or that maybe you've applied too much in some areas and need to back off.
Wait 6 Hours
If you put on too much clearcoat and it made a run, sand it flat with wet, 600 grit sandpaper. Then apply a small amount of base coat paint over the area, and re-apply clear coat.
Step 4: Remove old bumper cover
With a little searching, you can find instructions online for removing the front or rear bumper for most makes and models of car. Whether you can find directions for your car or not, removing a bumper always requires that you locate and remove a combination of body clips, bolts, and screws.
Watch as I remove the rear bumper cover from this 2003 Honda Odyssey.
Step 5: Mount new bumper cover.
Mounting your new bumper is as simple as removing your bumper, in reverse.
If there's any trim that needs to be installe don the insdie of your new bumper, transfer those pieces now.
You can drop off yoru old bumper at the nearest auto body shop to have it recycled.
Okay, so the color match and paint coverage on this bumper is excellent. And you can get results like this out of a spray can with our materials and process.
The job took about 3 hours and cost $400 in parts and materials.
Most body shops would charge about $800, so I've saved $400, didn't have to file an insurance claim, and I didn't lose my car for a few days.
Get all the stuffed used in this video at scratchwizard.net and start your bumper replacement project, today.
You sir saved me a ton of money. Bought a civic as a dd. toe hook hit it. Bump was crushed fender and hood too. 130 for all panels 65 to paint match. Only paid 400 for the car and now it looks new after I detailed it
This guy is good. His hand paint job is way better than some body shops
Thanks for the compliment! With just a little practice anyone can be a touch up wizard! Just practice a few times in an out of the way place first.
Fabulous! Thank you so much. Mine was quoted at $1200.00 plus tax (almost 1400; we ALWAYS Ager gouged in Vancouver, Canada!) I’ve found a cover for less thank $150.00, so I am imagining I’ll get this done for under $300.00, which is LESS than the deductible on my insurance, then there is the increase in coverage cost for the next five years. You have saved me a LOT of money, and given me the confidence to do this myself. I thank you so, so much!
Best bumper painting description so far on youtube. Thanks a lot. It was very helpful
Love your straight forward approach. I followed your instructions with great results. I only wish I'd spent more time sanding to give it that nice, smooth, factory-paint-job-look. Thanks for the the video!
Thank you Scratch Wizard for your great video. I still have to do the work but your video looks encouraging and will save me about half of the money that a body shop charges! My bumper replacement will involve silver paint so I will keep in mind doing the Horizontal and Vertical spray as to avoid the tiger striping. I'll keep you posted
Great job on this. I followed the video for the same type of job and came out with great results.
That was excellent. Im going to do the same with my new bumper. Thanks for showing me the alternative route.
Great video! Very detailed, easy & practical instructions 👍🏾
Very good tips. Spring is near and I'm getting my list of things to do. I normally add like 200 things to the list and on a good year get 2 done.
EXCELLENT job describing the process! thank you
Great job! Very informative. Thanks for sharing the information about where to obtain paint and needed products too. I'm ordering everything I need there. Well, except for my new bumper. :)
Really well done and provides great benchmarks for those of the uninitiated variety with the task.....TKU...

Really good job kid. It looks acceptable. Pretty amazing considering the work space, tools and the paint application process that you used. Is this legit. Because if it is, you have inspired alot of people. Thanks for taking the time to post.
Nice, thanks! (That bumper for my '09 Ford Escape is only $117 from Rockauto!)

Cool, nice work thanks for sharing ;)
Great video. Thanks
Thanks a lot man but where do you just "buy" factory paint
Great video man
how soon can you wax the finished product?
Nice job thank you.
Good overall tips. I would add that one should always use a plastic paint that has flex agents on a plastic bumper. Unlike sheet metal, plastic is more sensitive to temperature changes. Even if it is not hit (which would crack w/regular paint), plastic has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion (basically contracts with cold & expands with heat.) Also, I'm not sure I would be using a high heat gun in the manner you used it. The concept of maintaining a good working temperature between 50f-90f is valid. As important, if not more so is making sure you paint when the relative humidity is well below 85%. Also, never paint in direct sunlight. If you use a high heat gun like that, you can have multiple issues. For one, you can get spotting because the heated bumper will never be uniformly heated. Also consider that the paint itself and the surrounding air will be much colder then it will be almost instantly raised on the surface (not ideal.) It may appear to dry faster and drip less when you use the heat gun, but the two main things you need are uniformity and adhesion. The heat gun will dry the top surface after you paint but underneath it won't necessarily bond well. If I had to paint when it was a less than ideal temperature outside, I might gently warm the bumper first "before" any paint was applied. I would also bring the paint inside to warm it up so that they are close to the same temperature. You never want any big variations in temperature, humidity, etc. Also, when spraying, I try to use a steady spray and not start, then stop as that can lead to drips and uneven paint application.
I need to do this to a bumper I just bought. how much sanding is needed? just a light sand to make the paint adhere properly?
Thank you
Would the paint made to bond to plastic paint work?
for a front bumper, rear bumper and some small elements on the car, how many cans you say ill need to use on a ford focus 2?
great job
Did you want to paint the table? Lol thank you for the video!
This is great Hopefully I can do it myself 😄
Of course you can. What makes you think you can't?
Pete! Thank you. Lol. Your a funny guy
good tip. thank you.
You have to clean the plastic with Ajax or dishwashing soap. Then scuff it with 800 grit or grey 3M Scotch-Brite pad. Then add an Adhesion promoter. Add sealer or primer for front bumper then Basecoat & Clear.
Thank you!
Helpful! Being I'm gonna do this job at my own house, thanks man!
I saw your video about repairing plastic bumper and I like it is really good. I got an important question for you: I got a bumper in a good condition but the bumper is white and my car is red what should I to prepare the white used bumper for my red car?
i would prime the bumper after sanding it with at least 600 grit sandpaper.
Don't you need an adhesion promoter for a bumper or it cracks when it gets tapped?
its srill abouetenitb LikÝMMþip- mmmmmmmmYeah I'm matching with duplobauppodtý⁶c cans silver matching the car but it arker I'm gonna put the 2K 2 . I ids thudv
hi. thanks for the video and instructions . I didn't read the comments before and only bought 1 can of base coat and 1 can of clear coat. I see in the comments you suggested 3 cans each minimum? wow, that gets pricey . 1 set for me was $70 so 3 sets will be $210. do you think one can will do the job ok? the order online takes long time to arrive and just got my one set. thinking about going for it with one can each. no no?
hey man you make look easy..
bout to do this today
how many 12oz cans do you recommend for a front bumper cover for 2013 charger?
thank you!
How many cans do I need for a 2004 Honda Accord front bumper? What is the volume/size of these cans?
im doing my 2004 civic bumper im buying the 8 ounce cans of paint and clear coat, do i def need 2 of each? just want to make sure before i commit!
I see you did yours in sections and some people do it coat by coat on the whole bumper do you think it’s easier to just do it how you did?
can you use a plastic primer first then base coat??!
WOW!!! easy and fast...
Can you effectively use an airbrush instead of a spray can?
quick question... i contacted you guys on ebay yu said i need two cans of each base coat and clear coat.. question is how many coats do i do of each?
Wouldn't dust particles get trapped as you paint the surface (bumper in this case) though? That is my only concern painting it myself. Or are dust particles hardly noticeable after paint?
Make sure to work in a open garage on a nice non-windy day. Make sure the piece is lifted off the ground during painting process (Use a clothes hangar), and proper steps to reduce that effect include: 2 coats of adhesion promoter 3 coats of flexible sandable primer, let dry for 4 hours (Or overnight if you can) Wet sand primer using 600 gritt, lightly Apply base 3 coats of base 3 coats of clear Let bumper dry overnight (or longer) buff and polish it on or off the vehicle. I painted my side skirts myself, my rear valance, and my front lip of my jetta and it looks perfect for so little money. Just a lot of time and motivation.
Great video! I have a silver 2014 honda odyssey. How do you match the color when you are buying a paint?
Alfred De Jesus the website guides you
+ScratchWizard are the colors precise ?
How many cans, including ounces per can, of base coat did it take to cover bumper?
Hi thanks for this helpful video. How long you should wait to install after you painted?
Mia Eslava 1 hour
Ok, thank you :)
Wait at least 24 hours
Thanks Man
If I purchase a bumper that says it has already been primed. Do I need to scuff and prime it again? Or can I just scuff it and the apply base coat?
I did a spot repair on a crack on my rear bumper cover. I wet sanded the whole thing but looks like i burned through the clear on a few spots. What should i do? Can i just spray a few coats of clear over it? Thanks love your videos.
Miles Comparetto you must apply base coat, then clear coat over the spots where you have burned the clear
This video is very informative, especially for beginners like me. Now I'm off to prepping and painting my bumper lip. I hope this turns out well :D
Thank you sir
I have one of these to paint. Do I need to use an adhesion promoter if the new cover is already primered?
Sorry for the delay in responding. No, once the area is primed you can apply the paint directly with not additional products.
Your paint will crack. You need adhesive promoter and paint additive to make the paint flexible. This is a quick fix and will do if you are not going to keep your car for a long time.
thans for you good job
Where did you purchase the paint and clear coat
So I have a bumper on a 2004 Caddy DTS that I left with my two sons 20 and 23 to witness the bumper with multiple cracks in the paint and striations. Looks like it was also scraped under a concrete barrier or it was attacks by a Bengal tiger. The beauty is that the bumper is in tack, just the paint is missing in multiple places. I live in the city and the effective way people tend to parallel park is to hit your car. This does look like a great project I'd like to take on but I want to know how much of the product should I purchase?
Arthur White a complete kit + 2 extra base coat and 2 extra clear
was that rubberized paint that shrinks and stretches in hot/cold weather?
Quick question...will the paint chip off after a while? I noticed in other videos they go through a process of washing the bumper with solvents or whatever to prep for paint. What is the difference if you skip like in this videos case if it is important as they say?
Okay perfect! I was freaking out bc the guy said he was doing it to a primered bumper. Such a relief! Thank tou!
How many coats of base paint you put and how many minutes each coat?
i saw there are different bumper replacement like $60 and $200 on rockauto. What is difference between them? Can I just choose cheapest?
How many cans did you use?because I'm doing mine just want to make sure I buy the right amount
I find spray painting a very finicky task. Most rattle cans, while "color matched", will not match the rest of the vehicle properly,as they don't account for paint fade. Only a pro shop can match perfectly and blend to a seamless finish. With that said, kudos to you and all who do take this route and as satisfied with their results
