1961 Tonka State Hi Way Department Mobile Clam Crane Truck Restoration
I purchased this 1961 Tonka State Highway Department Mobile Clam Crane Truck from a local antique store about a half hour from where I live. It was in terrible shape and overall desperately needed restoration. Everything was there minus the clam release that goes on the very top of the boom, which I fabricated on my CNC mill. The entire truck was covered in rust, flaking paint, and corrosion. The windshield was broken, the crane rope was all tangled up and weathered, one of the two out riggers was snapped off and just wired onto the toy to keep with it. I was super excited to work on this one, although it was a larger project than normal. The part that I made on my new mill is actually the first successful part that I made on it. I've got a ton of learning to do in order to use the CNC to it's full potential, but it should make for some interesting future videos.
The color on this Tonka is one of my favorite colors and the finish has to be within the top 3 of my favorite restorations that I've done. Thank you for watching!

I remember Tonka Toys being advertised on TV in the UK. Their slogan being Tonka, real tough toys for real tough boys. With the name Tonka, I always thought they were made in Japan and not the USA. Unfortunately I was past the age of playing with toys by then. I notice from your restorations that many standard parts were used across the range, however, every restoration is always different and the finish looks much better than when new by using powder coating. Enjoying every one!
Love when the tow truck backs in and pulls the next project out of the bone yard.
Look so good, these kids can play with them now! Instead of computer, television or phone. Thanks for sharing.
I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR VIDEOS!! I AM A MECHANICAL ENGINEER AND MY DAD WAS A TOOLMAKER, SO WE REALLY KNOW WHAT SKILL AND PATIENCE GOES INTO PROJECTS LIKE THESE. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. JOE
No need to shout-we get it.

Seeing that old Tonka truck fully restored to as new takes me back to many a Christmas morning of my childhood!
Yes! Big , bright orange and black, and ready to work! Now we need the pick-up, loader and all the rest of the department! Super work! Hi, Beaker, don't chew the cables!
Thanks for watching! Beaker was just flossing her little teeth 😁
A very good job in restoring the Tonka clam crane truck you brought it back to life again.
I love the sheep! They're my favorite thing ever
I have watched a few others do the Tonka Toys, NOBODY does it better, NOBODY. I have seen them call it restoration but they don't take it all apart, they don't replace missing parts, they don't even remove all of the rust, then use paint over it. You obviously put out a quality restoration.
Six months after Christmas I watch my son take a load of broken plastic crap to the dump, remnants of kids Christmas toys that won’t last a year. Then I watch you bring back the good bones of these old toys and make them good as new, I know what I would rather give my grandkids for Christmas. Your vids are pure pleasure to watch.
Love watching you restore these old trucks and cars. These are the toys I played with as a kid. Thanks for the memories!
My brother had some of these too. The lazy axles intrigued me I don't think they ever looked this good though ,even new.
I have missed a lot on your channel. My mother was ill and passed. These videos are therapeutic for me, and thank you for sharing your talents with all of us
Oh Chip!! You did such a wonderful job on this. There were so many parts. I'm glad you got the yellow out of the headlights with the Hydrogen Peroxide. My favorite, is your inspector. So adorable, and worth the money!! Thank you again for sharing your AWESOME talent!!
Best 1:01 hour of my weekend so far, excellent outcome!
Thank you soo much for watching!

Taste test on the string...check!!! Awesome build!
Brilliant, love the new machine for cutting metal parts
The restorations you undertake Are absolutely fantastic.. the integrity of your work is simply 100 %. Thank you for teaching The right way to do it.
Yayyy the sheep are in the video 😁 The inspector checking the cables on the crane is too funny. Love these videos ❤
The sheepies are back! The sheepies are back! Oh, and a glorious, astonishing, magical restoration once again.
In this video the blast media is fresh and unused. I worked in a place once that got a job that included sandblasting thousands of parts, noone wanted to do it, but I said I'll do it. The sandblast cabinet was in its own room, I had pallets on either side of the cabinet, one for unblasted, and one for finished. After doing a slow testrun of a pallet, they estimated the time needed. Then we refilled the blast cabinet with new and a bit corser sand, and there was no problem cutting the time in half or doing the job without stress. I listened to audiobooks all day, and didnt meet a person except for the guy changing pallets and a friend who dropped in with coffe whenever it was time for a break, I loved it, I could do that for the rest of my life.
WOW! You truly outdid yourself on this one! So many parts & so many upgrades & improvements, to an already excellent restoration process! Your techniques are constantly evolving & it's a pleasure to see what you'll try next. And as always, love Beaker (the kitty) & the sheep!!
The hypnotic power that results from the contemplation of the impeccable realization of your restorations. Thank you so much!
what did you say
@@williamridner9451 Sorry but I think the google translator is not very intellectual ... I try again; the restoration process and how he describes it through video, for me they have an ipnotic effect, and of well being. I see the videos with interest. I hope this time the translator machine does the correct translation for some people ... Bye Bye!
Stunning job... Thank you for sharing...
I'm watching this video again for the second time. Awesome.
I really love how all you guys give a new life to old toys
I was waiting on the edge on my seat, hoping you’d pick sheep up! You made my day! 😝 That was possibly your best resto yet.
This is great you bring back to brand new.
Very very good restoration!!! Thanks for share!!! Greetings from Rosario, Argentina!!!
Pumped for this one! An hour long vid hell yes. Let me get settled in .
The chrome finish is impressive, it reflects like polished aluminium!
With this work you have demonstrated once again that you are the best.
Amazing state of the art equipment and the results are incredible. You have my vote for the best in the business.
So beautiful. I love the wet black bumper, & crane parts the best.
I've been binge watching Chips videos for over a week and have been fascinated by his multiple discipline knowledge. An amazing skill set coupled with amazing tools. Can't wait to see restoration go further into his stack.
I always wanted one of these when I was a kid. Great job. Thank you.
Pop's here. Your video work is outstanding. The step by step is very thorough. Love the end results.

Never ceases to amaze me on your love and enjoyment you get out of bringing these old toys back to life. It makes me feel good watching. Thanks.
Very nice an very cool piece id lived to had one of these as a kid. Great work. Thank u for all u save.
They sure don't make toys like they used to. Thanks, Chip, for making them new again.
Other toy restoration channels with alligatored paint or old pitting showing through should take note. Your channel is the gold standard for this type of work. Thank you for the entertainment and showing us what you do.
Joe DIY and Rusty Shepherd do nice work too.
Chip has ruined me for the other restoration channels
@@madcatter13 Yeah, for me Chip Channel is a Tonka’s equivalent of BaremetalHW channel.

Great choice of tools. Loved the milling machine. Glad you went to reverse on the tires. That was a lot of work. It came perfect. Awesome job Chip 👍
Phantastisch👍Wieder immer schön zu zusehen, wie aus Schrott neue Kinderträume entstehen!Danke🤩
Your inspector is very thorough ! They even test the string !
Magnifique Restauration ! Bravo !👍😉
This is what a professional restoration looks like 💯 A+
I love the tow trucks bringing them in! The sheep are cool too.
The name of this Tonka is a tongue twister and a mouthful!
I swear I'd love to have a sandblaster just to go around looking for old stuff to clean up... Great videos!

Such a complex and laboriously restoration item ! You reclaimed it beautifully to its former condition !
You've got one cute inspector there! Especially like the way he checks the tension in the cables with his calibrated teeth!!!!
This turned out awesome, one of my favorites!
I absolutely love watching these amazing restorations. No commentary, no cheesy music just the sound of the job is perfect and relaxing while having a morning coffee to get my day started. Great work! (I love the 🐑 👀👁)
Very cute 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑
LOL, I've still got mine on the shelf. Brought back many memories. Now I know how it's put together.
From the beginning to the end of your project videos, I am transfixed!! Thanks so much!!
THIS IS AMAZING. THIS IS SOME NEXT LEVEL STUFF. PRECISION, PATIENCE, EXPERIENCE, TALENT, HARDWORK, FOCUS, ALL WERE POURED TOGETHER TO MAKE THIS GEM. 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤❤❤❤
Really amazing! The one hour long video worth it, the result is incredible. My favourite part is when all the parts are fully restored and ready to reassemble, that moment is beautiful.
Your channel popped up on my 'Suggested' list, and it's a trip down Amnesia Lane. Tonka was the Acme of Christmas toys when I was a lad. Many a happy hour spent in the sandpit, with front-end loaders, dump trucks and dozers. And they were the REAL deal, the metal ones, not later ABS stuff. Resto vids are my AMSR time. I build model kitset aircraft. This to me is the industrial-scale side of kitsets. From knives to lawn mowers to the full-size heavy machinery rescues, I've been following channels for years. The pleasure from seeing these icons reborn with such love and care resonates with the Scots-English engineer ancestry. If anything, restoration channels like yours thumb the nose at the bourgeois disposable Consumerist economy. All I can say, at the final reveal of something all bright and shiny and new is, Wow. Thanks for all the effort you invest so we can enjoy your work. But, the danger here is, the more I watch the more I really need a powder-coating bay and a sand-blaster.
This was hell of a work! I bow to you with respect sir. Thank you. No kitty! Don't chew the ropes. Love the kitty.
I plan to watch the entire video tonight but wanted to let you know that I appreciate your work. I usually watch restoration videos at night to wind down. I also watch channels like tool rescue, something about the video without talking has a very calming effect.
Thank you soo much!

I just love how you bring life back to the old classics. I enjoy watching 👀 quite thoroughly. ❤❤
Incredible restoration...I'm happy to see that the inspector flosses after eating...
You are the best toy restoration person on youtube…THE best I have seen and 2nd place is not even close
The sheep skits at the end always make me laugh. Thank you for your creative ingenuity! ❤️
The long videos are my favorite. I love watching you solve all the little problems that crop up during the restoration. You're a real pro and a pleasure to watch.
My 2 older brothers and I were all born in the 60's. 1963, 1965 and 1969. We had loads of these toys growing up and they were a joy to play with. Needless to say I was and still am a 52 year old tomboy. Seeing you restore these brings back happy childhood memories.
ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE!! BRAVO 👍. BRAVO 👍 BRAVO 🙌
Good to see the inspector doing such a thorough job! She even checked the tensile strength of the cabling! Beaker has grown into a gorgeous cat.
Your best restoration yet! Great sheep stunt too.
Another beauty build. It looks like brand new. I hope you are donating these great toys to kids.
Your inspector is cuter than ours. I'm glad the sheep made an appearance, too. Great video!
Great restoration and best inspector

Makes me want to go back to my childhood and go out in the yard and play in the dirt again. I loved these toys as a kid. Did you know a brick made a good toy. Especially for making roads in the dirt. 😊
the minute I see the blasting cabinet I get inapropriatelly excited :)
Beaker's inspection was exceptionally thorough this time, she takes her job very seriously.
You should send a picture of this crane to Tonka, I'm sure they would love it. You did a fantastic top quality restoration on this truck, A1 . I really enjoyed the video, thank you for sharing.
ONe of your finest restos yet!
Your restoration must have been very satisfying. It is obvious that you are a kid at heart.
That’s the most enjoyable restoration video I’ve ever seen on KZhead. Congratulations on a superb job!

An hour long restoration video? I figured it must have been involved to warrant a video of this length. And I was not disappointed. Well done!
And the sheep crack me up! 😆🤣 Love it!
Most excellent restoration from the master!
You did a great job of restoration, I can imagine how long this restoration took, but the result was worth it 👍
That was an incredible restoration...thank you for sharing!!
Beaker and the sheep making cameo appearamces. What a great restoration. Gorgeous when all finished. You are truly talented. I am waiting for You to do that long ladder truck I keep seeing when you show the pile you still have to work on. Please do it soon. I think I have seen almost if not all of your videos. I sat and binge watched when I first discovered your videos.Did you ever believe in your wildest dreams that the sheep and Beaker would be so popular? 🤣 💕😊💕🇺🇸
This is now my favorite of your restorations. I really like that orange color. Your craftmanship is surely remarkable. Keep them coming.
I was missing the sheep, thought that maybe they went on a Union strike, love the before and after shots, just to remind us what it did look like, you took a rusty roached Tonka and brought it back to showroom new, awesome job sir, I didn't know you had a CNC machine to play with two thumbs up
I also think the Sheep are awesome I also love that he powder coats the parts they look so beautiful when finished I saw one channel that air brushes the parts and another who literally spray paints them. I think powder coat is the way to go I also love it when he has a little sheep with the sign that says I'm okay that one always makes me laugh
@@moonlitegirl72 lol that makes me laugh too, love his "sheep" lol
@@jamesalinio5277 you have to watch the one where he does a little red fire truck it has a little white wheel in the back to roll up the fire hose on when he Wheels the truck over to where he works on them he has one of the little sheep wedged in that little white wheel and he flicks it out and it goes flying it was hysterical the only thing that would have made it any better was it the little sheep had a little sign next to him that said I'm okay
