    • This is facts. Folks was really expecting Ewing to win a championship with Starks and Charles Oakley as his best teammates. I will say though that Hakeem’s supporting cast for the 94 championship against Ewing, was arguably no better than Ewing’s. Of course it turned out to be a dog fight that Hakeem rockets barely came out on top against in 7 games.

Eye test, statistics, intangibles, physicals, BBIQ, Ewing had it all. From his Georgetown years to his tenure as a New York Knickerbocker, he carried the city of New York on his back. • From 1988 to 1992, there was not a better center in the NBA IMO. Of course Hakeem and Robinson were right there, but I think Ewing had a slight edge during that stretch. Prime Patrick Ewing before injuries to his knees slowed him down, took prime if not peak MJ to 7 games in 92. In 94, he was a blocked last second three from John Starks, away from WINNING the championship against Hakeem’s Rockets, had the shot gone in. I’ve actually come to the conclusion that Ewing is underrated historically.

  • I want everybody to know this about me: I was born in 1973 in Seattle, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. I was PUMPED when Pat Ewing got traded to Seattle! I have my SONICS 33 EWING jersey! I knew that we weren't getting the 25 ppg Ewing, but he was coming off a 15 ppg, 10 rpg season. Why did Ewing average only 9.6 ppg with Seattle? That JERK Gary Payton!! By 2000, I, like many Sonics fans were SICK of Gary Payton and his antics. Ewing blotted his resume with a sub-10 ppg season, because Gary Payton wouldn't give him the ball! Ewing should have been a 12 ppg, 9 rpg, even if he was 37-38 when he arrived in Seattle. In the free open pre-season scrimmage before the 2000-01 season, Sonics fans cheered EVERY basket and free-throw that Ewing made.

    • @@shastealyomeal Hi Shasteal. Gary Payton was a total prick and a jerk. He made rookie Rashard Lewis cry during practice. He got Ruben Patterson mad at him. In 1999-2000, BEFORE the season, he said, and I quote, "This team needs to become more ghetto." So, the Sonics sign Vernon Maxwell, Ruben Patterson, and Greg Foster. Mid-season, because of Payton's trash talk, during a workout, he and Vernon Maxwell got so into it, they were throwing dumbbells at each other. Horace Grant (solid citizen) tried to be the peacemaker, and he got accidentally hit with a flying dumbbell, and was in the injured list with a wrist injury. SO many players later complained, that whenever Gary Payton felt that they were "upstaging" him, offensively, Payton would "freeze them out," and not pass them the ball: Sarunas Marciulionis, Don MacLean, take your pick. It's one thing for crybaby Kendall Gill to bash Gary, but when solid citizens like Nate McMillan, Hersey Hawkins and Sam Perkins are complaining about Gary, something's up! I wanted Dallas to beat Miami in 2005-06, because I did NOT want Gary Payton to win a ring! Funny, as a die hard Blazers fan since 1989-90, I want Gary Payton Jr to help the Blazers make the playoffs!

He was of course a better shooter than both (look at the elevation on those jumpers). Hate to say it but I think he got RILEYed, i.e. overconditioned and overplayed to the point that his body fundamentally broke down. Ewing was never the same after the historically grueling 94 playoffs. That’s the reason so many people remember him as this slow, wobble-kneed, flat-footed choker. He never gave up, took his team on his back as a matter of course, even when injured, and battled on till there was nothing left to give.

    • No, think similar player on defence (you could argue Howard was better but I say you can argue Ewing and either way it isn’t far off) plus a smooth jumper and fully operational set of post moves, just watch the vid. Before anyone mentions all of those DPOYs just look at his competition versus Ewings. Centre was so undermanned during Howard’s career. Ewing was drafted around years Olajuwon and Robinson were (fellow hof peers) as well as defensive monsters like Mutombo, Eaton and Mourning coming into the league. Then a kid named Shaq was drafted. Ewing was right there with the best centres of his era, not a tier below. Used to fry Orlando Shaq ass. Don’t let the casuals fool you. He could’ve headed a dynasty if he had one more superstar (we never saw him with a 20+ ppg scorer. People call him selfish but look at the roster, who the fuck was he holding back? Sorry for the ranting essay my friend, but I love big Pat as a player and he doesn’t get his flowers at all imo

    • @@seank3410 naw it's cool bro, my dad told me he wasn't better than Shaq, Olajuwon, or David Robinson. But all the 5's of the 80s & 90s gave each other the business and when I look at his highlights right off bat I can tell he was miles ahead of Dwight offensively. Defensively I see he had yrs where he avgd 4 blocks a gm but the competition amongst bigs back then was more fierce so I'll just say that I think he was better

    • I love Shanon but he's crazy on this one...Dwight was a great defender no doubt but Ewing was a great defender plus a great offensive player ...also Ewing did it longer and had a better jump shot and foul shooting....Ewing carried a whole franchise...its not even close to be honest Ewing hands down better

    • That’s bullshit. Before 1994 Hakeem couldn’t deal with Ewing. Ewing’s knees went bad after 93. He was all heart afterward. But from 85-93, Ewing was a savage in the post. And that includes bitchslapping Hakeem.
