Fraudsters in Ghana show us how they use internet scams to steal thousands of dollars from unsuspecting victims all over the globe.

While Nigeria's 401 scammers may have written the book on West African internet fraud, their shtick looks like Compuserve compared to what's going on in Ghana. Unsatisfied with the meager winnings from emailing thousands of random Westerners in hopes of convincing one poor sap they're the treasurer of the Ivory Coast, Ghana's scammers decided to stack the odds in their favor the old-fashioned way-witchcraft.
Taking a page from cyberpunk, traditional West African Juju priests adapted their services to the needs of the information age and started leading down-on-their-luck internet scammers through strange and costly rituals designed to increase their powers of persuasion and make their emails irresistible to greedy Americans. And so "Sakawa" was born.
Now not only is Sakawa Ghana's most popular youth activity and one of its biggest underground economies, it's a full-blown national phenomenon. Sakawa has its own tunes, clothing brands, Sakawasploitation flicks, and even a metastatic backlash from Christian preachers and the press. When we were in Accra over the summer it was impossible to walk more than 10 feet without seeing the word Sakawa in blood-red Misfits letters on a poster or tabloid, often accompanied by bone-chilling horrors of the photoshopped variety.
The government is freaked out because Sakawa is threatening Ghana's business reputation, the Christians are freaked out because they're losing money to the Juju priests, the press is freaked out because being freaked out is what sells papers, and the public is freaked out because their government, preacher, and media are all telling them they should be. All the while the Sakawa boys are living the high life and racking up debts to the spirit world, just waiting for the axe to fall.

I come from Ghana and the Juju priest called the baby "aboa" meaning animal. He asked the mother to give the child a cold bath. Down here people do not treat their kids like eggs. The treatment is a little rough, but not too rough to hurt the child. Westerners treat their kids like eggs. The kids grow up sensitive too sensitive and too entitled and have allergies and all sorts of schtit. Contrary to what you see on TV, majority of Africans are healthy and strong and will probably endure a lifestyle that will kill a Westerner. People walk more, eat lean and natural. To the Western observer, that is bad. In reality, the people in question are just different in a way that Westerners cannot understand

I used to work for a company selling ceiling fans online. We would get orders for 10+ ceiling fans shipping to Compton for example, paid for with a credit card. Once the fans were shipped we would get a charge back due to fraudulent activity. I started tracking the IP from the email orders and realized most of the fraudulent orders were coming from Ghana. If I remember correctly the IP always started with 41.

If they claim to be from an English-speaking country, yet their English is bad, boom, scammer. - If they claim to be from some other country, ask them things about that country and say sth in the language of the supposed country they're claiming to be from. If they keep responding in English and ignore what you said, boom, scammer. - Check what they tell you. If they talk about serious relationships and exhibit strong feelings early on, without getting to know you better, boom, scammer. - Demand a voice or video call with them. If they constantly claim they aren't available, boom, scammer.

I always thought "how can people fall for this crap?" But then I worked in a community computer lab. One day I walk in and there's this old guy sitting at a computer. He had about a dozen different internet tabs opened up, and they were ALL scam sites like "easy loans", "get cash fast", "claim your FREE Visa credit card", etc. They weren't even trying to look legitimate, they were so corny. But this dude had his driver's license, credit cards, social security card, and bank information sprawled out on the desk in front of him, and he was diligently typing in all the information the sites were asking for. He even had a piece of paper where he was adding up the money he thought he was going to get. I walked over and tried to explain to him that these sites were just going to trick him and take his money. He said "I don't care, I'll do it anyway", so I just reached over his shoulder and closed the browser for him. Desperate people will believe anything.
