In October 2013, VICE News was invited to visit the infamous tech mogul and creator of Megaupload, Kim Dotcom, at his palatial property in New Zealand. Even though Kim is under house arrest-since he's at the center of history's largest copyright case-he's still able to visit a recording studio in Auckland. So check out this brand new documentary we made at Kim's mega-mansion and in the studio where our host, Tim Pool, got to lay down some backup vocals for Kim's upcoming EDM album while talking about online surveillance, file-sharing, and Kim's controversial case.

He still may yet lose it all if the new Zealand court decides to extradite him to the USA. The whole process is also hugely defacing to his character. If the western governments win, he'll be left with none of it and having to take care of a wife and 5 kids. Don't take it all in at surface value, do a little research.

    • I believe a lot of reporters will do that kind of stuff, it just won't be on video. Michael Jackson showed us that when he recorded Martin Bashir for the report that he was doing. Martin was warming up to Michael, being as nice as possible, very amicable behind the scenes. Martin Bashir didn't show that, because he had a different narrative for the report he was going to air, but Michael showed how he really was. Reporters/Journalists warm up to the people their reporting on, especially if it's a multiple day thing. That's how you get them to open up and talk about stuff that they may not have discussed with someone who just 'hey, i have a few questions for you, hope you answer them' got to gain trust. that means building a relationship, even if it's a facade.

    • The criticism being placed on this reporter surprises me. Look for a moment at the demeanor of Kim Dotcom. Kim Dotcom was a young tech entrepreneur. He has a grander-than-life personality and revels in his personal accomplishments. He is very much a social, down to earth, pop-culture type of guy - writing his own music, playing in Call of Duty competitions, etc. Tim Pool was the *perfect* person to send in this example. His demeanor and personality matched that of Kim Dotcom's extremely well, which is something that sets an interview like this apart from interviews with other large news organizations. It wasn't just a talking head interviewing Kim - it was a man whose demeanor and personality, or at least the demeanor and personality he displayed in this video, was almost made to match with Kim Dotcom, making the interview less like and interview and more like natural/casual interaction - like two buddies talking. Some people may call that unprofessional, I call that a good way to loosen up the interviewee and get a perspective you otherwise wouldn't.

  • In the era of sites like RapidShare, Megaupload, Uploaded etc, MegaUpload was the absolute ruler. The download speeds weren't stripped, the number of downloads was far less limited than on other sites that pushed you into Premium membership... It was the only one that I had a Premium for, I had my personal backup (huge) stored on their servers. It was, by far, the one with most potential to shake the foundations of everything known as "legal/copyright stuff" on the Internet as we know it. I cannot begin to imagine how big it would've been if the "authorities" didn't crack down on him and entire Megaupload service. Too bad people once again show their stupidity and go for the one who makes the tool, instead of those who manipulated it. It's like arresting the inventor of the M-16 rifle for every single kill made by that gun. The worst part is that the people behind the crack down really managed to make it look like it was goverment official business, when in fact, Hollywood's behind all that shit. What it resulted in is a classic "smoke 'em out" tactics, where people moved away from the more obscure (and secure) solutions such as MegaUpload, to using torrent clients which offer no protection, privacy or obscurity whatsoever.

He was convicted on 11 charges of computer fraud, 10 charges of data espionage and various other charges in 1998 that he served a two-year suspended sentence for. In 2003, he was deported to Germany where he pleaded guilty to embezzlement in November 2003 and after five months in jail awaiting trial he received another 20 months suspended sentence." • Michael Shulski I have a problem with the self-image of a "modest" man, Kim is trying to push here. Even if his yacht days are over, he still poses and behaves like a gangsta, even though he's just a pale fat man. I think he is genuinely talented, but at one point realized how much easier it would be to exploit the system than trying to change it. That's why I don't believe he wants change for the world, but merely for his business. As for piracy - it will always be there. I owned a C64 in the 80s. Guess how many games I'd bought for it? Zero. Because we all copied from each other back then already. The same goes for music. The infamous mixtape, for example. The thing is nobody earned from these copies. They were often the only way for us to get our games of music (I recorded lots of radio shows and cut them later - on my dual tape deck ^^). What Kim does is becoming the middleman that earns from these copies. It is a business after all - and not a small one. I think the problems we are discussing are rather ethical than jurisdicial ones. From the lawyers standpoint, Kim may be innocent, but from a moral standpoint he surely deserves some of the heat he is getting. The problem again is that he isn't the only one, and I think too that the US government is trying to state an example here. So, despite all reserves against the man and his nepotism, I do think he has to be supported in his case. I think the winner won't be the general public though, the winner will just be Mr. Kim Schmitz or Mr. Dotcom as he is known now.

(I wonder if this guy has donated any money to charity? I have a feeling the answer to that question is - no.) I always thought to myself, whenever I saw their ads for movies, that it was probably a 'pirate' site. I personally checked it out and sure enough, that's what it was - many, many pirated movies. • ultimateredstone Yeah, I always saw ads for movies on their site. This guy will probably somehow get away with it. He has so much money, he can buy a team of great lawyers. I'm reasonably certain he took steps to protect himself, should the police charge him with piracy. I just wonder who he will use as a scapegoat. Someone will have to take the blame, but probably not him. Pirates are part of why we pay so much for media when we buy it. Also, it gives people who want more control over the Internet an excuse to try to do it.

    • CryptedSky I am angry because no self respecting person with money who is a adult or child would be wearing what the homeless and poor people wear on their feet. I only wear Egypt cotton socks and gator or sting ray or baby seal and shark and only the finest leathers from France and Italy and Germany and Korea and the USA on my feet not something so cheap and uncultured that I would be laughed at by my neighbors or the clubs I go to. Also I am not dim witted you have me mistaken with him who does not have any class when it comes to money. He also bought his way into the country he lives in because they are so desperate for money there that he even had to pay for the firework celebrations and had to spend 10m in the country to be apart of it. That is a very low standard for a country. Only thing he is smart at is making poor people feel like they are in the same battle with him so he can continue to make money off of them because poor people are stupid and money rules over all and you can turn anything into a struggle and get the people on your side as long as you put a drop in their small buckets for their economy.

    • ***** Do i even need to reply? You are truly something special Sir CryptedSky. It appears your focus on life is purely selfish. What have you done for the people and the earth to make it a better place? You support industries that make a profit off child labor and death. You attack others purely bc of what they are wearing. Your life must be so incredibly pointless.

    • Lloft96 there is nothing wrong with being rich and having an attractive wife. His money came from things he built, his own creativity and hard work, he deserves all the wealth. There is a difference between that rich and the rich we see using politics. Back door deals and all the ways government officials become rich is immoral.

Your claim on the fact that he's scamming people makes no sense to me. He has a vision for privacy and freedom. Yeah his music is shit. Yeah his political party is shit. But he has a good idea and he's utilises what he has. I respect him for being down to earth and not making others around him feel like they're below him.
