I visited Senegal to investigate if Akon city is truly a scam

For today's episode I traveled to Senegal to see for myself, if Akon City is truly a scam like people say it is. Akon launched a Wakanda-themed city in 2018, the first phase is to be completed this year, so my curiosity and love for futuristic cities took me to Dakar Senegal

  • I think it doesn't have to be futuristic,just build a city with excellent and well organized amenities that is drainage,roads,parks,hotels, add on the citys strength and culture,it still can be done but the investors really need to get on it,kudos Akon!,it was obviously not an easy project but it can be done.

  • Hi Steven, I loved your video 💪 I have been following this project for a while. To the best of my knowledge I think the following is going on: I believe Akon has trouble with SAPCO, the Senegal ministry of tourism. They are claiming Akon did not follow up on the land lease agreement where Akon City is supposed to be built. Also, SAPCO has offered a piece of the same land to a hotel company which has got nothing to do with the Akon City project. The situation is upsetting to Akon and to some Senegal citizens, claiming that it is typical Senegalese bureaucracy & corruption which is holding Senegal back from a better economic future. Personally I hope Akon can do some damage control and get the project back on track again. Ghana supposedly also showed some interest in the Akon City project and is presumably willing to offer Akon some land to setup a similar project. The only one who can shed some light on the current situation is Akon himself. I hope he does an interview again soon to give us an update. It's true that the crypto token Akoin is not listed anywhere on crypto trading sites anymore. However you can get ahold of the token in a Stellar DEX like LOBSTR using the swap function.

    • Worst excuse ever. Sometimes you have to accept some people are just talkers. He stated in the interview that certain buildings had been built but they hadn't. That is called lying. The first thing we need to do is call out liars. those are the true enemies of progress. On top of that you need to ask you self if you would rather hear about and amazing project and feel good about it, or actually see it getting done or take part in getting it done.

      @thundavolt@thundavolt18 күн бұрын
    • @thundavolt it's not an excuse bro, civil and infrastructure works take even 5 years before being executed. Project feasibility can take 3-5 years. By the time you're ready, other investors can shift their company projections/financial focus. Major projects are complex. All that you can do is critise those who trying, when you can't even organise a team of 5 towards a successful minor project. Relax my bro, if you're not in civil & infrastructure works, you can never grasp it. Remember, you'll be approaching major companies to part away or invest 100s of millions 🤔 in a city. It's not child's play constructing an entire city. The good thing is the land has been secured for now. Let's give a man @least 10 yrs to work & organise. Even the whole government projects delay with decades where you're living what abt a single person spearhead such a humongous project.

  • Thank you for taking us to Senegal with you. I'm especially interested in the Slave trade stories in Africa, for me it's about time Africa's stories were told, because the world talks about Slavery in America, but nobody talks about where they came from and what happened on our continent. The trade was way worse here. Also about Akon City I have faith that this project will reach completion, it's a matter of time and resources and funding. Nothing good and sturdy was building overnight. So patience is they key to success, amongst many other principles. Keep traveling and taking us with you :)

  • Dubai was a small fishing village in the 19th century. It took till the 21st century to get where the city of Dubai is at now. Now obviously engineering has significantly improved since the 19th century so technically it shouldn't take nowhere near as long to build Akon City but Dubai was funded by the state with unlimited funds. Akon doesn't have that kind of backing behind him for this project. I think people just need to have patience. Also have to bear in mind, the world came to a stand still in 2020 and the world economy is still suffering from it.

Akon is backed by investors nowhere near the level of an actual state. It's really not that hard to comprehend. It's not a rumour that you hear on the streets or a bedtime story. It's facts.
