  • Thanks for watching this video. I'm glad you're here. If you feel like this earns your subscription please click here: bit.ly/Subscribe2SED How this happened: I messaged Tory "If you ever find yourself with an open lunch I'll buy. No cameras, just rocket geek chat." A few months later he changed a flight one day so we could grab lunch, but he also carved out a couple of hours before lunch to give me a personal tour. He's as cool off camera as he is on camera. He allowed me to ask any technical question I had, and I never even got close to the limits of his understanding of rockets. His technical prowess is something I aspire to. We made a video on the second channel where I interview him about more specific things about rockets, as well as how he feels about competitors. 2nd Channel Interview with Tory about rocket engines, competitors, and business philosophy: kzhead.info/sun/d7WagLOBiH57iKc/bejne.html

Spend ten minutes on a freight loading dock of the crappiest box store in the lowest area in your area and you will find an ocean of people with more skill talent and character. Anyone who has spent five minutes getting to know ANY operation top to bottom and bottom to top knows that a guy like this is extremely rare. Failing upwards, brain fog robots are by far the norm. That entire "wide range" is a constant source of poor infliction on the people who execute executive ideas almost always. You are seriously dreaming of you think even 1 out of 10 CEOs in the globe could even work on the line at the place this guy runs let alone are his peers. Being able to surround yourself with reliable people who know these things is more valuable for a CEO who works at a more macro level. It's like a manager. A manager doesn't necessary need to know all the detail of the job his team does. His primary job is to manage humans and it requires its own set of skills. Of course it depends what job it is. Some management job requires more expertise than others. I've seen quite a few expert pushed to a management position and ending up being absolutely terrible at it and the opposite, managers who knows only the subjet superficially but doing a fantastic job as manager. A CEO's primary missions are strategy and organisation. • Starting in 1967 I worked for Convair at the Kearny Mesa plant in San Diego, CA on the Atlas Centaur program. The original Atlas rockets which predated Centaur were ICBM's and made by the same welded stainless steel process that is used on the current Centaur rockets. Basically, the rockets were flying gas tanks. The tanks were either kept pressurized or stretched in a special cradle that fastened to each end of the rocket to keep the tanks from collapsing and there were special trailers that kept the tanks stretched while being transported to their destination. The machine that did the stainless steel seam welding was a modified spot welder that used an rolling electrode wheel to give a contiguous welded joint. Another interesting thing about the Atlas SLV was that there were 3 engines, the center that could gimbal for steering and the outer 2 engines that were jettisoned after the boost phase to lighten the load.

As one of the airborne structural design engineers who helped design the Aft Transition Structure on the Atlas V seeing things at this level is very rewarding. Being at LMA we never got the chance to see the finished products for what we designed. Now nearly 25 years later... Thank you.
