    • I remember my mom talking to me about a situation like that once. She told me “I saw a very disheveled looking man steal food at the grocery store, but I didn’t turn him in to employees. Do you think I did the right thing?” She asked me because she was truly wondering, since she felt bad for the man that he was so hungry he had to steal, but she also wanted to abide by the law. I always say, people should never feel bad for doing things they NEED for survival. Stealing? Bad. Stealing because you cannot afford essentials to survive? Not good, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

      @martina13@martina132 жыл бұрын
    • I like this point, but this is not how neurotransmitters (NT) work. A higher concentration of NTs does not mean a greater effect- it is really about how many receptors are available and many other factors relating to the receptors. Things like the receptor location, concentrations, and type (e.g., ligand gated receptors, GPCRs, ion channel linked receptors) play a large role in determining the effect of the neurotransmitter. When a neurotransmitter, such as dopamine, binds to a receptor, a cascade of events unfold, allowing cell-to-cell communication and eventually, producing an effect (behavioral, physical, psychological, etc.) within the human body. There are sometimes thousands of steps before this effect occurs, and the neurotransmitter type is just one step in this long recipe. P.S. I hope this helped explain the science of NTs a bit better:) I studied Neuroscience in college and miss it a ton. The field of Neuroscience is often misunderstood bc neuro articles in popular press overgeneralize findings and display a lack of understanding of the research. It is a new field, so I recommend NCBI or research gate for up to date Neuroscience. The field is constantly changing

Soup cubes, tea, wet wipes, they approached me because I was literally dissociating and wandering the store for nearly an hour even after I paid for the stuff I originally went in for. I had an eating disorder for a few years at that point starting at 17 years old, and just turned 20... I use to take small skincare items when I was younger because of acne insecurities, but yeah... Anyway the people at the grocery store just let me go, security guard just looked at me with pity and that just upset me more somehow. I did look like a person in a crisis I suppose. I have depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia and ocd...so it’s fair to say my addictive personality regarding my food and my financial insecurities have manifested into me trying to regain control and calm my brain by taking things that I think would give me comfort for even even a short moment. Haven’t stolen in years, but I’ve also just become more depressed and agoraphobic since then so at least society can’t sneer at me for my other behaviours.

In highschool i kept a journal of how much money would have been spent. When i started working it got worse, i worked at clothing stores i liked and would leave with atleast $100 worth of product eacb shift. And heres the thing, im a great sales person so i would often be given more hours because i brought the stores money, while simultaneously losing them just as much. When I became a mom I went back to bartending so i wouldn't be tempted to risk it. My bad habit now is if I go shopping with the baby in a stroller I put my groceries in the stroller basket. And if anyhing blends in when im paying... i just dont put it up to pay. Then i put the shopping bag on top. Its crazy to me that i still cant stop.

    • Yeah, it's actually really f'd up how it's just a "quirky" trait in the game (Sims 3 and 4). If anything it would be better to make the trait actually more realistic, so that the Sim takes stuff without us controlling them (can't remember how it is in the Sims 3 but in 4 the trait doesn't really mean much). That's dark but it would be way more accurate. I think I first learnt about it from the Sims too actually.

The first time I learned about kelptomania was when I was a kid and my cousin, who was about 5 years old and much younger than me, started stealing our grandparents' mail and hiding it. My grandma is a counselor so she explained to me what it was and what was going on with him so thankfully I was educated and never had to break myself of any stigma surrounding it. I think it's important to keep taking about these things so people can understand better and so those who do need help feel capable of taking steps in the right direction.

I am comfortable in a room full of stuff, while bare rooms are very stressfull to me. I also tend to give a lot of sentimental value to objecs, maybe because they were a gift, or because it reminds me of something nice that happened years ago. Throwing those things out is really hard, even if they are often useless. There is also an element of "what if I need it later?", that is also related to anxiety. Throwing anything away becomes incredibly stressfull and so any excuse is good to keep it, even when you know you'll probably never need it. For a lot of us, objects mean safety, and you don't want to throw safety away. Hope this could give you a little bit of insight! 🙂

After her husbands death she started to steal tiny things. She’d forgotten her wallet one day and needed a lighter, so she stole one. From that day forward here mind was consumed with stealing little things and seeing what she could get away with. The day she was caught, she’d stolen like $80 worth of merchandise but the store already was watching her from precious thefts. Thankfully after everything, the judge was sympathetic. She got 16 months 16 months suspended and had to undergo grief counseling, addiction counseling, parenting classes, and community service. All in all, I think she’s doing a lot better now.
