  • Don't drive through the flood water - my dad was driving in what he said looked like knee deep water trying to get home yesterday on Beachcroft Ave and suddenly more water came down and surrounded his vehicle which ended up stalling with the water level rising inside. He was lucky that we have an awesome neighbour who went out to him and rescued him 😔

    • @@danieleyre8913 you’re missing the point. Yes, the rain comes from the sky but where there was once a full section and one small house, the rain mainly soaked onto the ground and was released slowly into the aquifers. With 5-6 houses now on that section, the rain pours straight off the roofs and driveways and into the storm water system, which quickly overloads.

    • The thing is you people, it's not a competition. Flooding is flooding and this one has caused chaos for many people with homes flooded. Auckland has a low area that heads out to the west of the city and a house did float away. Many home were inundated with water. Dirty water. Also damaged infrastructure. The eastern line train track subsided, stranding a couple of trains. Transport chaos. Expressways closed. Roading closed. Trains cancelled. Elton John cancelled. 11,000 had filed their way into the stadium. I was nearly there. OK, much worse flooding has been in Australia eastern seaboard in recent months. This is because New Zealand gets blocking anticyclones. They don't move off. This prevents the lows and fronts moving off from Australia, causing the massive floods that have occurred. The highs and lows are more intense but highs can move very slowly now. This is why. Marine heatwaves are occurring and NZ has had disturbing marine heatwaves in the Tasman Sea. This badly affects fish species and the critters- all life there and of course the weather. Weather is much more intense now. We used to get rain in the summer months but for some there has been none for growing grass/crops. It's all getting topsy turvy with thing out of season. I've sen downpours here nearly like I've experienced in Brisbane sometimes, where you can't see past the bonnet/hood of the vehicle.

    • For 7 years I lived with a good friend in Mt Albert in a house which bordered Oakley Creek, the house is at the top of a steep slope down to the creek but at it's closest point is only ~2 meters away and ~3 Meters above it . This would flood violently every 2 years (violently, as in the creek does a 90 degree turn at the bottom corner of the property and the volume of water coming thru was a quite scary), this would do some minor damage to the bottom of the garden but it would recover within a couple of weeks. After witnessing this for the first time we decided to develop a "plan" for 1 in 100 event. When we built the retaining wall and deck off my bedroom (which counter-leavers OVER the creek), we massively over-engineered it. This morning we video chatted and the water is raging ~500mm below the deck but lapping onto it, it's surreal. The house is fine. IRONY: The council recently removed the beautiful mature trees on the property because a MAJOR storm water drain runs from the road down to a MASSIVE stormwater engineering project immediately over the fence.....so they are obliged to completely reinstate the garden.

Obviously not much. Water care scandal with its head Raveen Jaduram and his ridiculous salary did nothing to which should have been restructuring and rebuilding of a now defunct storm water system. Bureaucracy realy doesnt represent the billions of dollars taxed from citizens in the form of rates and road user charges that should reflect in, simply adequate infrastructure. So where is the money going and why isn't fundamental basic structuring being spent back into our city system? Corruption obviously. Auckland city council has a $30 Billion equity so why isnt it being implemented into what is needed? Cycle lanes and such is irrelevant when the entire city is able to flood, let alone roading to enable people to get to work. Also a failed public transport system.

The Eastern line train tracks subsided stranding a couple of trains I think. The one I was wanting to catch but missed it because I needed a pee, got stuck on the line. Glad it wasn't me.

  • "Declaring a state of emergency" any sooner would not help any. All it does is call on central govt to help with recovery. That is no help while water is running through the house, civil defence is already doing what they can, and emergency services are not sitting on their backsides waiting for the mayor to make a declaration, they are responding to what ids happening.

    @tonylittle3508@tonylittle3508 Жыл бұрын
    • Wrong. Calling a state of emergency allows for greater powers and flexibility for both the mayor and emergency services. Plus it underlines how serious the situation is to the general public. Sounds to me as though you’re just trying to make excuses for this rubbish mayor.
