Auckland, New Zealand declares emergency after torrential rain - BBC News

New Zealand's largest city Auckland has declared a state of emergency after torrential rain prompted widespread flooding and evacuations.
The downpour in Auckland on Friday shifted houses, stalled traffic and cut power to homes and businesses - with an Elton John concert, expected to be attended by 40,000 fans, cancelled minutes before it was due to start.
The New Zealand Herald reported that a body had been found in Wairau Valley on Auckland's north shore.

    • The war that ravages my land, A constant threat, a constant band, Of violence and destruction, Leaves me with no solution. I fled to safety, far away, But still, the trauma's here to stay, And though I've left my home behind, The war still haunts my peace of mind. I dream of studying at a school, Of becoming something great, a jewel, But the war has left its mark on me, And getting into universities, I can't see. For though I've fled to safer shores, The war still lingers, a constant sore, And though I've worked so hard and true, I'm not as great as those Robotics Engineers, who. Graduated from the top schools, And now have futures, bright and cool, But I, with war-torn past, Will never reach their level, and surpass. Though the war has left my country in despair, And my dreams of education now a nightmare, I've fled to a new land, but still I see, The destruction and trauma, haunting me

The airport got flooded and people were stranded there cause the roads were flooded and they couldn't leave, many cars got submerged as well. • The Met Service completely failed Auckland, there was no advance warning of the rain at all. The Met Setvice was asleep at the rain radar. The Auckland council has been failing to maintain its stormwater system for years, spending the maintenance money on advertising and self promotion. There weren't any thin people on the news footage so I guess the population are good to miss a few meals.

  • New Zealand has Civil Defense and they told the new mayor, Wayne Brown, that they were ready to announce a state of emergency. He waited and considered it for far too long before acting much to everyone's detriment. We were trapped in the city trying to head home but there was almost no correspondence from officials on what to do. Everyone had to rely on social media such as Facebook traffic update pages for their information. Also, there was an Elton John concert and Auckland Transport told people to drive into the city as the weather was too bad to put on extra public transport. 40,000 people had already arrived by the time concert organizers pulled the pin. By then there were significantly more cars on an already busy highway on a Friday night in major flood water. Shambles. To top it off, there is a brand new motorway that is close to opening and officicials refused to use it as an escape route for the hundreds of people who were trapped by the side of State Highway One due to flooding and major road slips blocking the only ways home to the north of the city.

  • It is bad, but it’s not “climate change” . Don’t forget we live in an island on the Pacific Ocean; loads of rain is normal. Now, it’s the lack of planning from council as they are building new roads and housing on old structures. The systems can’t cope with rain like this. Kia kaha Auckland.

    @matildereadett@matildereadett Жыл бұрын
    • Bullshit, the frequency of these events is increasing, that’s climate change

      @willkelly7370@willkelly7370 Жыл бұрын
    • Climate change impacts us and those in the Pacific islands more because we live on an island. Our roads and housing were never built to adapt to climate change. Why do you think this is happening my dude 🤦🏼‍♀️

      @laurenstancliffe3773@laurenstancliffe3773 Жыл бұрын
    • Matilda, you can't just dismiss "climate change" like that, in the same way someone can't say "this is climate change". That's not how it works. Climate change purely leads to changing weather patterns that "can" influence the severity of events. I.e. Auckland might normally get one of these events 1 in 20 years, but with climate change it may increase to 1 in 10. Your comment is very flippant, and I'm sure you are not working in the field of climatology to be making such statements. The other part about council planning - sure, fill your boots. All councils and governments around the world are pushing the limits as to where they are building and sometimes with dire consequences. If you have a gripe here with Auckland's planning - fine.

    • even after adjusting historical events for inflation, the frequency of events causing at least $50 million of insurance damage in NZ is now ~6 times higher than it was in the 20th century

    • @@GlasgowCelticBhoy no one dismisses that the climate changes. Of course it does, how else would we have had multiple ice ages and similar effects to what we’re seeing now with the world heating up all the way back in the Roman times (before the Industrial Revolution) . I think what she was saying is don’t use this flooding as an opportunity to virtue signal this globalist nonsense.
