At least three people have died and one is missing after New Zealand's largest city experienced its "wettest day on record" on Friday.
Auckland is said to have received 75% of its usual summer rainfall in just 15 hours.
A local state of emergency was declared as authorities managed evacuations and widespread flooding.
New Zealand's Prime Minister Chris Hipkins thanked emergency services for their swift response to the disaster.

I remember the support Aucklanders gave us in Christchurch after the earthquake. Hope everybody stays safe. Kia Kaha ❤️
From Christchurch yes everyone in nz supported us at the time will look for any way I can help we are all one ❤
While our family in Auckland isn't affected. Your lovely kind words to Auckland is well received. The earthquake in Christchurch was horrific with many deaths. We're thankful it was only two dear souls & not more. However, One death brings grief to not only the family concerned, but affects many people who count themselves thankful it wasn't them. If such unprecedented events become more frequent , most cities around the world are underprepared to deal with flooding.

Not used to it in Auckland....but the South islands West Coast gets an average of 6 metres of rain per year....as the earth warms...there will be many more severe precipitations...
Thanks Will, thats why the West Coast is..........empty. We will get by with bigger drains
South Island West Coast is rain forest, Auckland is not. No city in the world has infrastructure designed to handle the amount or rain Auckland received
Parts of Auckland got close to 3m in 40 hours. I think the Airport was about 274cm, and some recordings were higher than that. The West Coast is a narrow strip of flattish land against a mountain range spine running down the SI, so high rainfall there is a normal weather pattern. There is nothing normal about what has hit Auckland.
@@ytzpilot I did say if you read it correctly ...Auckland is not used to that much rain....I lived on West coast out of Hokitika for 5 years... My son lives in Sydney....they too were getting unusual precipitations and flooding . Cities made up of millions of tons of concrete....which of course creates a problem when heavy downpours occur..also where most trees and bush is cut down...nothing to soak up the water...
@@williamearnshaw410 Vancouver had been getting similar storms last May, and recently California. Auckland and New Zealand seem to be experiencing these one in a hundred year events every few months. In March we had a similar downpour, caused significant damage. Insurance companies are baulking at paying out because of the frequency of these events.

It looks like some of the houses were allowed to be built on rather precarious terrain …
looks like the built the same as on the California coast except they are not built hanging over the cliffs to start and with a timber support on the overhanging parts.
Can confirm the city council also said that which is true, but then again rain like this was unusual but common to some concept

New Zealand Prime Minister declared the flood in Auckland as unprecedented. That means they haven't prepared for it or they built where they shouldn't. There was a state of emergency declared in Auckland on the 27th of January 2021 because of flooding. (source 'The Guardian' UK) A real journalist would have pointed out that it isn't unprecedented.

249mm in 24 hours recorded at the Auckland Airport!
And the airport flooded, yet the airport is less than 500 meters from the sea on flat ground, which is many meters lower down. Suggests incompetence by airport management or council by not having suitable rainwater drainage.

Water....1 litre equals 1 kilogram....it is a very powerful kinetic force when on the move....I've seen many flash floods....they are indiscriminate....but if one builds on flood plains, low lying areas or too close to the sea.....mixed with too much concrete covering land areas....flooding can become a regular occurrence...

The green MP at the end , since moving to NZ a number of years ago flies multiple times back to Mexico yearly . During NZ lockdowns he flew back to Mexico then tried to jump the queue to get back. Arguing as an MP he was an essential worker. His trip back to his homeland was purpotedly to visit his sick step mother . His facebook showed him partying all over resort spots with his partner. He then flew back to NZ with him after securing a NZ visa earlier for him. The man is a facile hypocrite .

New Zealand sits in the temperate weather belt that cops severe winter storms off the southern ocean and severe tropical storms off the equatorial pacific during summer. Flash flooding isn’t a new phenomena but has occurred with varying severity throughout the country often causing death. This event impacted the high density populated area around Auckland so tends to create headlines. The last major flooding of Auckland occurred just last year, so not unusual. Just in case memories are short, back in 1988 Cyclone Bola struck NZ. Rainfall of close to 1 meter was recorded near Gisborne but its impact was nationwide. Twenty years before Bola a storm resulted in the loss of the Wahine, an inter island ferry an 51 of its passengers and crew. Like I say, nothing new about this storm.

This bout of unprecedented weather is actually NOT the issue. The New Zealand Local Councils-(deals with on land issue's) and... Regional Councils-(deals with water issues) and the NZ Govts past and present have foolish, no common-sense laws, that have separated the roading infrastructure and the drainage infra-structure from each other i.e. each man for himself mentality. These 2 entities should be joined together instead of being separated, simple! N.Z's bureaucratic b.s. around these 2 things needs investigating, PRONTO.
