Why hunt coyotes?
Coyotes are presently the most abundant livestock predators in western North America, causing the majority of sheep, goat, and cattle losses. For example, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, coyotes were responsible for 60.5% of the 224,000 sheep deaths attributed to predation in 2004. The total number of sheep deaths in 2004 comprised 2.22% of the total sheep and lamb population in the United States, which, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA report, totaled 4.66 million and 7.80 million heads respectively as of July 1, 2005. Because coyote populations are typically many times greater and more widely distributed than those of wolves, coyotes cause more overall predation losses. The United States government agents routinely shoot, poison, trap, and kill about 90,000 coyotes each year to protect livestock.
Coyotes typically bite the throat just behind the jaw and below the ear when attacking adult sheep or goats, with death commonly resulting from suffocation. Blood loss is usually a secondary cause of death. Calves and heavily fleeced sheep are killed by attacking the flanks or hindquarters, causing shock and blood loss. When attacking smaller prey, such as young lambs, the kill is made by biting the skull and spinal regions, causing massive tissue and bone damage. Small or young prey may be completely carried off, leaving only blood as evidence of a kill.
In the absence of hunting pressure on coyotes practiced by rural people, urban coyotes are losing their fear of humans, which is further worsened by people intentionally or unintentionally feeding coyotes. In such situations, some coyotes have begun to act aggressively toward humans, chasing joggers and bicyclists, confronting people walking their dogs, and stalking small children. Non-rabid coyotes in these areas sometimes target small children, mostly under the age of 10, though some adults have been bitten.

  • From the UK here. 🇬🇧 Ignore the complainers! I love it when you’re twatting those yotes. It’s very therapeutic. Farmers perform a valuable service, providing the world with cheap food. The yotes can spread horrible diseases, such as rabies, parvovirus and distemper and they are a menace to livestock, domestic animals and possibly even humans (such as small children), given the ideal circumstances (from their point of view). The hunters assist the farmers, likewise performing a valuable service in removing or lowering the level of that threat. There is clear evidence that shows that yotes, like the fox before it, are urbanising. and that they actually live longer in towns than they do in the wild, because of the lack of predators to hunt them. That is one of the reasons why most states want the population of these creatures to be kept in check. Keep up the good work, gents! 👍

Within 3 or 4 years a pack of coyotes can grow so vast they'll deplinish they're own food source and other animals food sources before fighting each other and starving and it can take decades for an area to recover, and that's not taking into account farmland and rural communities with children and dogs

  • I keep seeing really ignorant comments about how cruel shooting coyotes is. Coming at an issue with emotion instead of logic often leads ppl to unwittingly advocate for the exact thing they claim to be against. A kill shot is instant. Being eaten alive is a long, slow, painful death. Would everyone rather cows be eaten alive? Now THAT's cruel. If one of them has to die, I'd rather the coyote die quick and painless.

Heavy western coyote pelts were going for $70 - $100 back in November, but lower quality southern coyote pelts were only worth $10 - $15, hardly worth the effort of skinning the animal and tanning the hide. The article I read also mentioned that supply chain disruptions were clobbering the prices, so hopefully the guys made some money from their kills before the market went to shit.

  • Can't stand those coyotes. We had a nice pheasant population starting to make a come back here in Michigan back in the 80's until the DNR in their wisdom decided to sprinkle those feral dogs all over the place to "control the rabbits". The pheasants got wiped out again. Brilliant move DNR.

    • @@adambooth1908 nobody has ever abandone billions of dollars in military tax payers money to the Taliban like Joe Biden did when he order to abandone Afganistán. Not even when we left Vietnam this ever happened. Not only he left billions of dollars in weapons and equipment and technology to the enemy he also left over two thousand American citizens stranded that have been killed and kidnapped by the Taliban and many have been leaving that country thru the border and what ever means necessary. When we left Vietnam when left less than 200 Americans behind and that was prisionera of war not civilian and contractos like Joe did. So let’s not get confused with bad Presidents and the Worst President of all times in the history of this country. Let’s have that very clear.

      @Javservice@Javservice2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Javservice The modern equivalent of billions of dollars of taxpayer funded equipment was left in Vietnam, tanks, artillery, mortars, etc. Equipment costs more nowadays, but a ton was still left. When you leave from a roof on a helicopter you aren't bringing your ground weapons with you. As for the American citizens left behind in Afghanistan, if you were given a year's notice to leave a country that is hostile towards you, why wouldn't you leave? We shouldn't have an obligation to rescue people who don't take good advice. It's like staying for a category 5 hurricane even though they said evacuate 3 times. There was never a thought that Afghanistan would defend itself and remain a country after we left, they literally gave up without a fight.

    • @@adambooth1908 not even close Mr Biden voter and supporter.. when we left Vietnam we only left 200 max military personnel whom we could even find since they were in prison camps hidden in the jungle all over Vietnam and Cambodia.. you can’t compare to the thousands your leader Joe Biden left in Afganistán whom were civilian personnel, American citizens that worked as contractors. Your leader Sleepy Joe will pass as the worst President in the history of this country. As the matter of facts I have a friend that just came from Afganistán and is telling me horrors of the journey he had to go thru to leave Afganistán. He left thru the border of Siria walking to Turkey where he had to sell all his belonging including his beloved watch to buy a ticket to get home.. You have no clue what your President has done to us in general..
