NIKON Z9 Powerbank Charging - Garden Bird Photography - USB-c Power

When i bought the Nikon Z9, i was keen to try out the Usb charging facility on the new camera. Because of the high price of replacement batteries I wanted to try supplimenting the Z9 power from a portable powerbank. This proved easier said than done. I tried a couple of existing powerbanks that i had and they wouldn't work. After much research I found a powerbank that would do the job. the Anker Powercore Essential 20000PD. Join me for this short film as I explain the method of charging and demonstrate one of my Eardley Creation custom made pouches for containing it. These relatively small power packs are superb for charging all manner of electronic devices i.e. watches, phones, camera batteries, drones, mini pumps, headtorches ets, etc.

  • Great Video, I had bought two 30000 mah units at 26.99 each on amazon which I had the same issue as you did, charge light came on for a few seconds then went off and wouldnt charge, but when I saw your on screen message saying ensure you use the supplied lead with the Anker unit I went and tried a lead I used for my Ipads which I new charged my camera, plugged into the usb c on my power brick and hey presto it charges the camera, so it would seem its not a special power brick you need but to ensure you have a special charger lead. In my case it was an Apple charge lead for my iPad… awesome, I have 60000mah at my disposal for £54 quid.

  • Interesting little video :) I've got a couple of older 26800mAh powerbanks wich are not 'Power Delivery' and they /can/ charge the Z9 or Z9 battery in its charger, but only if I use a very beefy and short USB-C cable! Also, there are 3rd party batteries for the Z9 - I've got one from Wasabi Power that was about half the price of a Nikon one and works perfectly..

    @GeoffCooper@GeoffCooper Жыл бұрын
    • Cheers Geoff, its just dead handy to be able to charge the battery in the camera. 3rd party batteries are a no go for me, a mate of mine fried his D500 with one so I'm always a bit wary of non genuine batteries.

      @simoneardley@simoneardley Жыл бұрын
    • @@simoneardley I have been using DSTE batteries for a very long time on many of my cameras Nikon and Canon without any problems whatsoever. Wasabi is shit actually. DSTE has been around for a very long time. DSTE EN-EL18 work just fine in Z9. By July their EN-EL15 will work in Z8. Also, DSTE make EN-EL18 that are different for D500 grip. They have an adapter that is build in and it also charges the battery at the same time. Each battery comes with its own charger too. I will not use any other brand but DSTE. Their customer support is excellent too.

  • Greenfinch, probably my favourite garden bird. We had a long spell where we didn't see any (I think due to a specific disease that was going around) but thankfully we once again have a pair visiting the garden. On the charging topic; can you charge the camera directly via usb cables from those big powerbank thingys that everyone who ows a camper/motorhome seems to have reviewed? I appreciate that you can take the camera battery charger and plug that into the big powerbank as a middle man so to speak, but if you can go the USB route then the battery charger could be left at home.

  • I use a Juice 10,050 mAh LongWeekender power bank (bought on a whim from Sainsbury's a couple of years back for £20) with my Sony A7iii It gives me the equivalent of more than four Sony NP-FZ100 batteries for less than one third of the price of one. I can run the camera directly from it (as long as the battery is in) and also use it to charge the battery itself when the camera isn't in use. Very handy to have.

They are made from less pcs.than competitors in order to better protect Gear but also this way the preset focus rings (i dont know how its called in Nikon) are covered by the material. Is there any Access to this ring? I tried to ask Jonathan from Tragopan but he didnt answered fully my question. He only mentioned about protection and the button AF stop in case of Canon.

    • As long as the powerbank is a power delivery (PD) USB-C it should power/charge the Z9. Also, There is a setting in the Z9 under the "setup Menu" where you can turn on "USB power delivery " .. when thats on, your power bank will actually power the Z9 and won't put drain on the battery and then when you turn your camera off it will switch to charging the battery. Then switch back to running the camera when you turn it back on. So even if you have a low/dead battery, you don't have to charge the battery to operate the camera, you can just run it off the powerbank. A couple weeks ago, I photographed the Aurora for 6 hrs on a battery that was basically dead. I just ran the Z9 off of a power bank. Works great for doing exactly what you're doin too., Sitting in a blind. Which is my favorite way to photograph

  • Just be careful , plugging and unplugging to the USBC will wear out the socket on your camera . The same problem occurs on mobile phones ! It's probably safer to charge the battery via a separate battery charger to prevent power surge through the electronics in your Expensive Nikon Z9 . I'm just very cautious ! Very best wishes , Richard.
