A mother elephant ran across the road in a hurry without realizing that she left her baby behind. Lions spotted the lost calf and saw an opportunity!

55-year-old Brent Schnupp, a paramedic firefighter from Virginia, USA, captured this sighting and shared it with LatestSightings.com.
This incredible sighting unfolded during Brent's recent safari to the Kruger National Park, located in South Africa.
“I was in the Kruger National Park. It was a crisp morning, around 6:30 AM, just north of Mopani camp, and my safari group and I were excited, hoping to see some of Africa’s wild animals.”
“As we drove along the roads in the park, our anticipation grew. The thrill of not knowing what may be around the corner was captivating. As soon as I had that thought, we came across a male lion casually crossing the road. He walked down to a small puddle. To our surprise, two other lions appeared out of nowhere and joined him-a younger male and a female. They were seemingly enjoying a peaceful moment of coexistence.”
“However, the tranquility was short-lived. Our attention was drawn to an adult female elephant emerging from the thicket ahead of us. She appeared to be in distress and was crossing the road with great haste. Little did we know at the time that she had left behind her vulnerable calf.”
“The lions, sensing an opportunity, came onto the road and soon realized that the mother elephant had left her calf behind. The younger male lion took the lead in chasing the defenseless baby elephant. In contrast, the older male lion just stood and watched on, while the lioness also seemed uninterested.”
It was an emotional moment as the baby elephant stood in confusion, contemplating whether to make a break for it or confront the lions. The lions attempted multiple times, but the baby elephant turned to face them every time. The little one displayed remarkable courage and bravery. The lions, despite their numerical advantage and years of experience, couldn't manage to get a grip on the calf.
The standoff continued until the lions eventually gave up, seemingly convinced that they couldn't overpower the young elephant. “In my six years of visiting Kruger National Park, I've never witnessed anything quite like this. Even our seasoned guides from Leo Vantage were astonished, admitting that they had never seen lions chasing a baby elephant during their entire time in Kruger.”
“If there's one piece of advice I'd offer to fellow safari enthusiasts, it's to be patient and stay committed to a sighting. Often, nature rewards those who wait. While this particular encounter developed rapidly, we were prepared to stay for as long as it took to witness such a spectacle.”
“I wasn't alone in capturing this extraordinary event; there were two guides and five other guests with Leo Vantage, all of whom can attest to the rarity and intensity of this moment. Remember, giving animals space and not pressuring them allows such remarkable scenarios to unfold naturally.”

It’s very rare to see Baby Elephants protecting themselves from danger without their Mothers!
In this case, Lions were too kind
That was my first thought… elephants are well known for protecting the babies of the herd. To see one wandering by itself is alarming. Also very sad because elephant calves crave near constant affection, similar to a human infant/child. Poor baby.

I have a theory. In Botswana where I grew up there is an area called Savuti between the Okavango Delta and the Chobe Forests and the lions there have formed mega prides and specialize in hunting young elephant. However this comes with a grave cost. Elephants in that area actively search for lionesses with cubs and kill the cubs. They remember. I think these lion instinctively know not to bring that kind of heat on themselves.

@@christine_lovelacewhich doesn't specify that mom and baby elephant were reunited but, I'm inferring that based on the information provided. 🤞
Truth.
So odd it’s not with the Herd. Elephants are so protective over their young. The entire Herd watches over them not just the mommas. How he got separated is baffling.
There are quite some reasons why the lions left the little elephant alone 1) They're already full and have no interest 2) Inexperience in killing elephants for food 3) Trying to escort the kid elephant out of their territory to prevent the big adults from coming to look for it where they are 4) Last elephant meat they ate tasted really bad
Hohohohoooo
I’m pretty sure that 1 and 2 are most likely. Lions don’t exactly “escort” their prey as the amount of distress would alert other animals of their position. It’s most likely that these lions were curious, not hungry, or had little experience with hunting elephant calves.
Maybe they're just too tired and/or hot? The male in particular seems to be panting.

The idiot who filmed the murderous event, can not publish the murder. Only a cold blooded idiot would not rescue a lost BABY elephant being HUNTED !
Frustrating indeed to be left hanging like this not knowing if the elephant survived or not. The lions don't seem that eager to catch it in the end unless they are just making it slowly tired before easily catching and eating it. The elephant won't feel anything if that's the case! Hormones make that there's no pain. Unlike humans, lions are true carnivores. Every human having compassion for this little elephant should not be eating animals or their milk and eggs as those animals get tortured to give milk and eggs and the male and weak babies get killed or they get killed when they are big enough to produce meat for humans who don't go out in the wild to hunt but buy meat sealed in plastic at the supermarket. Just my thoughts when waking up 😉
Yes the baby got back with its mother and another herd arrived after the lions gave up

Elephants are Super intelligent and hold grudges!
It's in dung withdrawal, which makes a little calf very terrified.
After some of the videos that I’ve seen of elephants retaliating against lions, you would wonder why lions would still try to have elephant on the menu. There are several videos of unprovoked elephants attacking lions simply because they remembered that lions killed one of their young ones. It’s really fascinating stuff. Humans can go their whole lives thinking that only humans kill out of vengeance. These videos have proven time and time again that elephants will also kill out of vengeance. .
The elephants remember. The lions don't.
Agree. I think the Lions were scared of what might happen if they took the young calf down. I think they wanted to find out if the baby elephant was injured or sick or weakened (and hence abandoned). But it seemed ok so they would not know if mama elephant would turn up n make mash potatoes of them all. If there is one animal you dont want to mess with its a female mother animal. I have seen female Lions stand up against big male Lions to protect their cubs. Fearless. Imagine what an enraged mama elephant would have done to these predators.
Yep! Elephants have actually even retaliated against humans and attacked villages after a calf or other herd member was killed by the villagers.

Interesting story, but reminds me of another recent such video of a lioness "caring for" a wildebeest calf, a la "the lion laying down with the lamb"! The story didn't end so well for THAT calf according to the other video. Not saying that I'm not "heartened" about stories of wild, sometimes predatory animals, perhaps often(?) younger inexperienced ones, who were raised, trapped, hurt or captured, & being saved, helped, released or fed by compassionate human(s) in various ways, seemingly showing gratitude or at least a long memory of that kind help/treatment by a human being!

In a nutshell, it appears that a mother elephant wss crossing the road and lost her calf, the baby elephant you see here. The baby calf was crossing the road when 2 tigers followed it. The tigers tried to get at the baby calf but the calf wasnt having any of that nonsense. That's when the baby elephant tooted his horn - his trunk. The tigers knew it would be difficult to try and get at the baby elephant. They gave up and walked away. Its not clear if the mother elephant and baby calf were reunited. The story is in the description box. The video was captured by Brent Schnupp, a fire fighter from Virginia USA.

@mariacouto6274 I know, I thought about that too. He just watched. My thought was, if the baby elephant were to be attacked, would the tour guides shoot the tigers, or would they say, " well its just nature's way the animals of Africa feed off of other animals. I think in some parts of Africa, you aren't allowed to shoot the wild life - unless, of course, the tigers attack a human being.
