Imo, one of the greatest matches of all time strictly in terms of quality.
+Justin Webster I Agree. I mean Djokovic had incredible hard games (US open half final vs roger, and final vs nadal same tournament) and both finals vs murray at AO. But in Terms of Intensity i think this 1 and the loss to wawrinka 1 year later were his toughest matches. Hard to call. But fun to see djoker getting such a beating for almost 2 sets, and still fighting his way back.
agree
Jokovish has defeated Murray in 4 Australian Open finals.
quality is all that counts
Federer vs nadal 2006?
This match was a turning point in Wawrinka's career.
Exactly this is when he found hope that he could compete with the top guys
turning point? lol after winning AO n french open Stan hasnt won any. juss 1 yr of his prime
winning 2 slams is an incredible accomplishment, based on those 2 wins alone, he's better than 99.99% of people to ever play the game
+daeshik cho Guess who's in another Slam final?
even if he does still a great tournament by Stan
The best 4th round match I've ever seen. I don't think Djokovic was prepared for the whirlwind Wawrinka was bringing his way. Stunning backhand, from both players.

Acid - Trance US Open Final wasn't that good

Are you kidding? US Open 2013 Final was one of the highest quality matches Ive ever seen in my life. Just because it wasnt a 5 set marathon doesn't mean it wasnt. That match's quality was on par with this one
slamandjam2 Best joke I have ever heard.
this has the chance to be the best match ever. without the drama, and big names coming into play, just pure ballstriking this match deserves it
Although the match 2014 was a very great one
The match that began Stan's legacy. To turn heartbreak into success, marks the sign of a true champion. What a player.
Hands down one of the best matches ever
I remember watching this live on TV. Absolutely epic. Djokovic's defence work is mind boggling.
How Novak managed to win this match considering how ridiculously unbelievable Stan was playing is beyond me. The passage of play Stan came up with to be up 6-1 4-1 to start the match is perhaps the best consistent ultra aggressive hitting off the ground I have ever seen, it was that ridiculous it was laughable.
Only comparable to Federer at the start of 2017
one of the best matches I have ever seen --- mind-boggling defense, attack, tense moments, bravery --- everything that tennis stands for -- was at its peak.
The "best" loss that ever happened to Wawrinka. This is basically where his career as a permanent top player began. Despite the ups and downs he still has, he's been overall been going up since this match. The amount of belief he got from this match was scary to say the least.
BrotherTree1 umpire mistake cost him this match
I started to love tennis because of this match. I love Wawrinka's backhand.

Best match of 2013.
CoxCRO easily
CoxCRO Nadal Djokovic in RG was even better in my Opinion.
Djokoivc - Del Potro at Wimbledon was pretty good as well
CoxCRO Nadal Djokovic SF Roland Garros tops this one.
Djokovic is the common factor in all those matches. But I have to agree the one at RG vs Nadal might be the best.
This is the most fitting possible commentary for the occasion - they're just in stunned, amazed disbelief at what they watched unfold
This is how Stanimal was born
and in the US Open 2016 he got his win against the Djoker!!!
Epic finish to an epic match, in terms of quality easily the best of the year.
easily one of best ever
No gs match in past 2-3 years has come close to this in terms of pure quality of tennis and excitement.. Truly golden era of tennis 2010 to 2019
Ridiculous tennis. How often since 2011 have we seen Djokovic get absolutely rag dolled like that? Just doesn't happen. And he won! Incredible.
Every time he plays Stan in a major last few years regardless of the result, Novak gets dragged side to side brutally. Wawrinka possess the best firepower tennis has ever seen when he is playing at his best. It's like he plays with two forehands its unfair.
David Horsburgh he just got bagged at the US Open yesterday by Wawrinka. 😂
Damon Salvatore ohhh poor triggered djoko fan. Why don’t you cry in your mama’s basement.
@@jobsmine Pretty sure you're referring to US open 2019, he was injured that match he retired... Not saying Wawrinka hasn't bagged Djokovic but that one is just an injury case. I mean Wawrinka wasn't even playing that well himself he lost the next match in 4 set
@@2CSST2 you Djokovic fans never fail to impress me.. lmao how do you always excuse his lost on an injury? If that was the case Nadal’s injury was the most brutal and the longest. People said he was finished after that knee injury and yet look at him no excuses... and won 22 slams so far.
that last point. he's not a human being. how does he defend them two last shots then with unreal shot! GOAT
In my opinion, the best match that i've ever seen. Such a high qualitys points.
AO-2012 Djokovic-Nadal. Wimbledon final 2019 Djokovic-Federer. Roland Garros 2021 semi-final Djokovic-Nadal.
Not taking anything away from Wawrinka but Djokovic movement and balance is something else
This may have honestly been the best tennis match of all time and not a lot of people know about it because it was a 4R match. Definitely the match that turned Wawrinkas career around. The following year Wawrinka beat djokovic in the semis and then Nadal to win this title.
Djokovic indeed played his most demanding matches against Wawrinka, what an explosive force he was. Both reached one of the highest levels that the tennis history has ever witnessed.
I am pretty sure Djokovic has hated playing against Stan ever since this match.
indeed
so do murray from that year and nadal from 2014
Not sure, he has just lost to him 2 times since this match and walloped Stan al the time
@@enzyvicenzo7350 well, he beats everybody all the time, so 2 losses suck for him especially in slams
@@enzyvicenzo7350 must be at least 3 losses for djokovic 2014 at AO 2015 at FO And 2016 at US Open
The beginning of Wawrinka 2.0 - I remember cheering Stan on so hard, esp when he won that 4th set.. Although he lost, I became a fan of him at the end of this match.
Danish M same here
Stan played the game of his life. His one handed backhand is what kept him to the 5th set, and hopefully will pave the way for future players to consider using this beautiful stroke. Down the line, inside out, and cross court backhands were flawless. Fantastic game.
Goosebumps right now, this is heaven tennis. One of the best everrr!!!
Every now and then I find myself coming back to these highlights. It's just...gruesome. Visceral. Raw.

One of the 2013 greatest matc, for sure! Stan Wawrinka is an absolute delight to watch, maybe the most elegant one-hand-backhand on Tour. I am just sad that at his age he never won a major tittle, partly due to the harsh competition he has! Hope he can improve the mental part, because when he does, he will be just unstoppable!
One of the best matches to ever be seen on a tv screen!!
Stan got his deserved revenge, but this game here was THE game. Both players played much better than they did in 14' QF.
Amazing warriors the two of them. Stan never gave up and came back to beat Djokovic and won the Title in 2014

Josh Lynch Yeah gotta give the edge to Verdasco in that one. He was a monster in that match. It’s a shame Verdasco and Wawrinka played the best matches of their lives (Wawrinka may have played better at RG 2015 not sure) but ran into Nadal and Djokovic playing insane tennis
When he's at his best, Stan Wawrinka is a good a player as I've ever seen, and exciting with it.
He plays Novak tough, no doubt. But elite Stan only shows up once a year (doesn't regularly compete in Slams. And only has 1 Masters). Bit of a mystery, since the talent is clearly there
they all play power games - the difference is Stan's is nuclear powered!
These are 2 warriors giving it all they have. The pace and shot making was first class. My hats off to both men.
Match of the year hands down
Wawrinka backhand is a different thing
One of the best matches I've seen in my life. Absolutely brilliant!!
that backhand winner at 1:44 that Stan ripped was soo sick!!
best match in 2013
That single handed backhand of Stan is better than Roger I would say. It's a pity that he flourished very late in his career otherwise he could have easily won many more slams. But take a bow Novak Djokovic, that's what champion's are made of.
You cant say which match is the best ever, but you can safely say that this match is in Top 10 matches in the history of tennis. It had everything, ground strikes, forehands, backhands, drop shots, volleys, drama, attacking, defending, mind games, tactics, stamina management, absolutely everything... Well done lads...

One of the most amazing and exciting matches in my opinion! Great job both players.
I remember staying up and watching this game, literally was falling asleep but was so awake at the same time. Such an incredible game!
It's interesting that Wawrinka never played on this level against Federer or Nadal, and it's not like Roger and Rafa are on different level compared to Novak. There is something in Djokovic game that suits Wawrinka.
or something in Wawrinka's game that can outlevel djokovics game
Its because djokovic doesn't win the backhand exchanges with stan, unlike most other people. This puts djokovic into a more defensive state where Wawrinka can start ripping balls. Federer and nadal are more successful because 1.federer doesn't give Wawrinka time to react by moving forward and 2. nadal can overwhelm stan's backhand with his forehand.
@@AdithyaSKumar-vq5tk then what about 19-6 H2H
@@menon_ji4984 i didn't say wawrinka was better than djokovic, just that he is capable of playing better specifically against djokovic. French open 2015 is the best example of this

This match is one of the greatest of all time!

When the crowd goes wild at 14:15.....love it. Def match of the year.
Breath taking is all I can say!
I wonder how many fans Wawrinka got after this match... I was one, for sure. Before this match Wawrinka's name meant little to me. Just another somewhat good player hovering 12-16 in the atp ranking. From then on, though, he became one of my favourite players, up there with Federer. And it has been quite a pleasant ride so far to watch him winning 3 slams. And counting. Roland Garros 2017, maybe?
Stan played one of the matches of his lives and lost. It must've been heartbreaking. What an incredible match by Djokovic as well. Tennis at its best. Glad to see they are such good friends
If Warinka had use his challenge I really believe he would of won his First Grand Slam.

Antonio Hernandez the point he was trying to make is that it's "would have" and not "would of". I agree the way he put it was quite unnecessary though.
Best match point of all time
I still well up at the end. Felt for Stan. I watched it live at the time from my home and it was mesmerising. Definitely up there with my favourite three or four matches of all time. You’ve gotta hand it to Novak how he manages to win under so much pressure it’s just mad. At that time it was the best single backhand on the planet versus the best double backhand on the planet maybe ever and it was unbelievable. It was one of those losses as a fan you never quite get over (like Roddick vs Federer 2009 Wimbledon and Djokovic vs Federer 2019 Wimbledon and a couple of others I could mention). Those few years 2011-15 is some of the best tennis I’ve witnessed from Djokovic - he was just incredible. Never ever gave up.
11:48 That's what my wife said..

To me
Haha
And can't stand all the haters who think ripping off your shirt is disrespectful. It's done, or something very similar, in almost every sport. Hockey has gloves sticks etc thrown into the air. Football has dances and "in your face" moments after a touchdown. Soccer has shirts ripped off. Get over it. NASCAR has burnouts. Djokovic was the better player this match. Get over it. Pure adrenaline after a grueling and epic battle.
I did raise an eyebrow when he ripped his shirt.. so here is my two cents. Djokovic went to him pretty quickly at the end of the match to exchange gg and even gave him an opening for a kiss (you know I'm joking). He showed lots of respect to Wawrinka, but it's hard to discotiate a "solitary" extreme celebration from such a match, especially in tennis. Soccer is way different since it's a team vs. a team. Here it's mano a mano. It's pretty clear that the court belongs to the winner after the game for celebrations, but in my book, ripping your shirt like an animal isn't really the image of a good winner, it's over kill, especially in a gentlemen's duel. I don't think he meant offense, but still. Removing his shirt normally and going super saiyan III then would have been way better and classier.
To each his own.
djokovic was not the better player since neither was "better" than the other this particular day..... this nuance seems to have been lost on you.
The better player in a match is the one who won. At that very moment he was the better player. How hard is that to understand?..
Here's something to think about....Who gives a shit really?
The final point its the perfect ending to a match of this calibre, like it summed everything that happened on the 5 sets
One of the best matches ever and the loss that changed Stan's career. That might be the best match points I've ever seen
