  • Imo, one of the greatest matches of all time strictly in terms of quality.

    • +Justin Webster I Agree. I mean Djokovic had incredible hard games (US open half final vs roger, and final vs nadal same tournament) and both finals vs murray at AO. But in Terms of Intensity i think this 1 and the loss to wawrinka 1 year later were his toughest matches. Hard to call. But fun to see djoker getting such a beating for almost 2 sets, and still fighting his way back.

The passage of play Stan came up with to be up 6-1 4-1 to start the match is perhaps the best consistent ultra aggressive hitting off the ground I have ever seen, it was that ridiculous it was laughable.

Federer and nadal are more successful because 1.federer doesn't give Wawrinka time to react by moving forward and 2. nadal can overwhelm stan's backhand with his forehand.

  • I wonder how many fans Wawrinka got after this match... I was one, for sure. Before this match Wawrinka's name meant little to me. Just another somewhat good player hovering 12-16 in the atp ranking. From then on, though, he became one of my favourite players, up there with Federer. And it has been quite a pleasant ride so far to watch him winning 3 slams. And counting. Roland Garros 2017, maybe?

  • I still well up at the end. Felt for Stan. I watched it live at the time from my home and it was mesmerising. Definitely up there with my favourite three or four matches of all time. You’ve gotta hand it to Novak how he manages to win under so much pressure it’s just mad. At that time it was the best single backhand on the planet versus the best double backhand on the planet maybe ever and it was unbelievable. It was one of those losses as a fan you never quite get over (like Roddick vs Federer 2009 Wimbledon and Djokovic vs Federer 2019 Wimbledon and a couple of others I could mention). Those few years 2011-15 is some of the best tennis I’ve witnessed from Djokovic - he was just incredible. Never ever gave up.

  • And can't stand all the haters who think ripping off your shirt is disrespectful. It's done, or something very similar, in almost every sport. Hockey has gloves sticks etc thrown into the air. Football has dances and "in your face" moments after a touchdown. Soccer has shirts ripped off. Get over it. NASCAR has burnouts. Djokovic was the better player this match. Get over it. Pure adrenaline after a grueling and epic battle.

    @pccoder@pccoder9 жыл бұрын
    • I did raise an eyebrow when he ripped his shirt.. so here is my two cents. Djokovic went to him pretty quickly at the end of the match to exchange gg and even gave him an opening for a kiss (you know I'm joking). He showed lots of respect to Wawrinka, but it's hard to discotiate a "solitary" extreme celebration from such a match, especially in tennis. Soccer is way different since it's a team vs. a team. Here it's mano a mano. It's pretty clear that the court belongs to the winner after the game for celebrations, but in my book, ripping your shirt like an animal isn't really the image of a good winner, it's over kill, especially in a gentlemen's duel. I don't think he meant offense, but still. Removing his shirt normally and going super saiyan III then would have been way better and classier.
