The MYENERGI EDDI is a great solution to use excess solar PV energy to heat hot water. Combined with the Harvi wireless current sensor it measures exported electricity and diverts this to a standard immersion heater.
However what happens when the sun doesn’t shine? In this video, we add an optional relay card to interface with the existing gas boiler via the s-plan wiring arrangement.
Eddi can also be used to divert excess solar of energy to other electric heating appliances - e.g underfloor heating or electric Aga’s

  • Can I use an Eddi relay card to control the gas heating on my Viessmann Vitodens 222-F Floor standing combi Boiler with built-in storage cylinder so that I could give preference to heating by my solar panel array? If so, what would are the installation instructions?

  • Great video and thanks, I have a question about adding a thermo stat to the relay card, i have a problem where the eddi thinks the immersion has reached max temp and then starts to send excess power to the grid and my cylinder never reaches the same temp before I got the eddi installed. I was hoping that by installing the thermo stat that the eddi would read that setting over the immersion??? Have ye any experience of this??

  • Have fitted the relay board in Eddi and wired the interruption to the Immersion Stat in the S Plan box and heats the water to temperature on gas boiler on a manual boost or Timed schedule . Question is the live feed from my Tado box means is only live when the Tado hotwater control is triggered ( means Tado App shows hotwater on 24/7 not ideal for stats ).How can both Tado and Eddi Relay operate the boiler separately to each other .

  • Thanks for the video - very informative! We have just had an eddi fitted, and I had a discussion with the installer about how it should control the boiler as a slave. He has wired it up separately from the boiler (as shown in the eddi wiring diagram number 1), but this means the boiler might run as well as the eddi if left on by the controller. It looks like I need to go the same route you have - use the eddi to slave the boiler for hot water, and have a smart thermostat with timing to run the heating. Could you please share the link to the video where you sort out the S+ wiring and fit the wago junction box? I have had a good look through your videos but can't find it. Also, even though you mention it, none of the links are appearing above you in the video - perhaps this is a KZhead change?

  • Hi, loving your videos but I'm confused by this, I currently have my how water heating on auto, so if I have my Eddi attached heating the water through the immersion heater, do I really need this anyway - surely it just means that it keeps the water hot for longer during the day and if and when the gas does kick in on auto, it will be for shorter as the water is already up to temperature - or have I got this wrong please?

    • You’d usually set Solar to be the main source and gas kicks is if the water isn’t up to temperature at sunset. Also In this installation we wanted to get rid of the old timer as it wasn’t app enabled

  • Questions from a householder; Is the Eddie prioritising solar to heat the hot water tank until/unless its reaches max temp? The regime that Coordinates the solar and gas boiler to heat the hot water tank is intriguing and could be clarified - do you stop the combi heating that tank somehow if you think you’ll have a supply of solar energy instead ? - is it weather dependant? do you schedule this solar heating based on an assumption about how much demand for hot water there’ll be for an upcoming period ? Is that scheduling done in the Eddie? And does it abandon the solar heating if demand is high or sunlight poor or time running out (before an expected demand period)? Is there an operating guideline that illustrates how much hot water will likely have been heated by the solar given specified demand and user scheduling regimes, and time of year Is there a payback calculator that examines the value of savings made by having had solar heat a proportion of the hot water ?

    @constructioneerful@constructioneerful2 жыл бұрын
    • The Eddie is set up to prioritise solar heating. The immersion heaters will use excess solar during the day. If the water isn’t up to temperature by 4PM then a heating cycle on the gas boiler starts to make up the difference. All of the timing is programmed via the Eddie. We removed the time clock on the gas boiler. This is a basic set up - if you want to see a more advanced approach check out the videos we are releasing at the moment - kzhead.info/sun/nbqPkbmgfYyYkqc/bejne.html

    • @@efixx In this case is there any advantage to having the Eddi control the gas other than having it all in one place? Would having the gas on a regular timer to come on at 4 not just serve the same purpose being as if the tank is already hot from adequate solar then it just won't come on? I am getting a solar install with an Eddi (and Zappi) next month and just debating whether or not to take the existing oil fired hot water control away from Hive and use the Eddi instead. Standard S plan system also.

  • I am looking at getting one of these but I can’t see how they can lead to any savings? My off-peak go tariff is 7.5p kWh. My gas is 7p kWh. So if I was to heat my hot water cylinder up at 00:30-04:30 it would cost me extra to do so. Likewise, if I divert my excess solar to an Eddi, I will save 7p kWh gas but as I am on the a SEG tariff I will not be getting the 4p kWh for exporting the excess solar. So I am really only saving 3p kWh. At £500 supplied and fitted that is a lot of 3p’s to see a return. It might have worked great with FIT payments but not now, Or am I missing something?

    @jameslarwood5276@jameslarwood5276 Жыл бұрын
    • It depends upon your individual energy circumstances. If you have a large solar install you can export beyond the grid limits so having a place to dump the otherwise wasted excess is a great option. Moving forward the energy market is going to be more flexible, and gas costs are predicted to rise, so being able to trade energy could lead to some interesting options.

      @efixx@efixx Жыл бұрын
  • I can get why this might be good, but as a Sparks that happens to also install gas heating systems it seems somewhat pointless? In my eyes over night is always going to be the Gas boiler heating the cylinder but during the day the timer will be switched off anyway so you'd have the Eddi hooked in with the panels and the immersion turned on so the evening showers are heated by the sun, so why bother with interrupting the cylinder stat. Also if the Eddi fails does it fail NC or NO because you could effectively stop the cylinder heating at all if it fails NO. This is one of those "technology is progress so it must be a good idea" when in fact there are far more simple solutions to the problem.

    • It was more of a problem with two separate controllers and a separate app for the heating.

      @efixx@efixx2 жыл бұрын
    • @@efixx The separate controllers wasn't an issue given how they function and as long as they're timed appropriately, then it just comes down to the choice of app. That's always going to be an issue now that every boiler manufacturer has an app, then hive, google along with apps for different manufactures EV chargers/ solar set ups. Until there becomes an industry standard protocol that all apps and manufacturers agree to using so any one piece of tech can communicate with any other piece of tech there will be issues. The one thing that really ought to be kept as simple as possible though is hot water on demand and I'm sorry but this just doesn't seem like a sensible way of doing it. Teaching people how to time control their hot water/ heating and changing their habits will have a far bigger impact on their bills and the environment.

      @matthewdale956@matthewdale9562 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, I can't get my head around doing it this way. If the tank stat (timed for the hours when hot water definitely needed) is set below the temp the tank heats to under solar, isn't that job done? The boiler will only kick in if the solar hasn't heated the tank sufficiently. Isn't this the same as replacing the tank stat with the relay system with into S or Y plan?

      @jevpots@jevpots2 жыл бұрын
  • How much does the immersion controller and relay board cost?

    @AndyK.1@AndyK.12 жыл бұрын
    • £395 for the Eddi and another £45 for the relay board if you get it from MyEnergi's website. I can understand the Eddi if you have solar it makes sense but the extra for the board when you could just change the gas boiler time control to only heat from say 1-2am ready for the next morning family shower. £45 and someone to fit it, plus if it fails I now know it fails Normally Open stopping the boiler from heating the hot water as backup. Or 5-10 minutes of your evening putting new times into your programmer, which is free. Also if it fails what with the current shortage on semi conductor chips I expect the price to possibly rise, not to mention the instructions advise taking the cylinder stat out of circuit so the Eddi relay board is in control of the boiler. Great but now means any engineer that attends to get the boiler up and running as a back up needs to fit a cylinder stat back and un-link the Eddi.

  • Good video as a DIYer I get a lot out of these even if it is just to have an informed conversation with my sparky. If you are paid for electricity export (3-5.5p / kW as I write) at a price c. 110% or greater than that of a kW of gas (2.5p but I am locked in so likely 3.25p now) then you are economically better off selling the power and using gas as you will have more money in your pocket AND if under your scenario at this home you heat between 10am and 3 pm that gives 2 to 4 hours for the water to cool down before it is used.

  • One of the things that bothers me about MyEnergi is that they seem to like to find ways to have extras that you need to pay for. So when you compare products they look the same but then you realise you have to pay extra for things. I.e. two relays, or a CT clamp, etc.

  • I cannot understand why in this day and age, most houses are still using hot water tanks and keeping water hot that isn't being used instead of using inline gas heaters to heat the water as it's being used. A tank should only be used for solar heating with a gas inline heater to heat the water being used to the desired temperature if the solar heating has not got it hot enough. So much gas or electricity is being wasted with standard hot water systems.
