DANGER, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU EITHER KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING OR DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MESS WITH YOUR HOMES ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS. IF IN DOUBT CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL!!
Ever since getting the zappi I have been thinking about getting the Eddie unit so that we can see and control all the energy usage in the home.
The solar iboost has been a dependable unit for the last four years, but the control was fairly basic.
So let’s see what this Eddi thing is like!

  • Found this video after getting through 2 solar iboosts in 6 years. Thought I would change brand and site it some where cooler as I’m sure the iboost couldn’t take the operating temp when at full bore. Good explanation of fitting and wiring. I’m looking forward to see how the Eddie compares.

    • Hmmm same story here, my iBoost died after 3.5 years - I noticed on occasion it got a bit hot and went into thermal limiting, so maybe its minimal thermal design isn't actually good enough, given what folk are reporting here. I was going to repair the iBoost but RS haven't been able to supply a replacement bridge rectifier since June (now end of Oct). Since I've just had a Zappi installed for our new EV, I've decided to order an Eddi to get the integration with the other Myenergi products and hence also add the app control. Eddi is due in 3 days...

  • Cool, looks nice. I had a cheapo diverter ~£100 and it was built like a tank. Being electric only it made sense to take the HW duty off the air source heat pump for most of the year. Now I'm in a new build with GCH and gas at 1.9p kWh the payback on these devices is what just under 10 years? Great devices though.

  • Nice to have fitted the last part of the set! I had planned to site my new Eddi in the airing cupboard but noticed that the specified maximum operating temperature is only 40 degrees C. This may not be a concern if you have a very well-insulated tank/cylinder/store, but I'm fairly sure our airing cupboard gets warmer than 40C, so I'm considering siting the unit somewhere outside the airing cupboard. Longer term I'll probably change the cylinder to something more modern.

  • Well you had almost helped me decide whether or not to get an eddi. And the lack of setting of priorities had just about clinched it (… until I read some of the replies). However, I think I’ll stay in the dark ages (for now). I’ll keep the Immersun (remember them?). At 6.8 mWh it’s still going strong.

    • Hi, I also use a couple of the older Immersuns & they are still going reliably after 7-years. I've set mine as master & slave & run water heating, electric kettles, storage radiators, etc. by just switching the outputs to the load circuit that I want to operate. I think that MyEnergi bought-out the remnants of Immersun after it went into administration. I'm now investigating whether to buy & install a SMA Sunny Island unit with batteries to enable my system to save surplus energy during the day for use when dark. Also to give me backup power if the grid goes down & to keep my fridge freezer going reliably without losing all the frozen food within. If anyone reading this has any insight or expertise into the wiring of Immersun w.r.t. Sunny Island unit to avoid conflicts, I would appreciate a comment. Regards, Johnnyk.

  • Thanks for the video. I've just ordered my Eddi unit, so this will be helpful. I'm curious about how your isolator switch is configured. I guess that this was the original double-pole isolator switch (pre-iBoost) which has been rewired to suit the iBoost/Eddi installation, since originally I'd expect the mains feed from the 16A MCB to have been wired directly to it along with the flex to the heater. But now, I'd expect the mains feed to be re-routed directly to the Eddi (i.e. no longer to the isolator). Is the isolator now just a double-pole switch for the supply to the heater coming out of the Eddi? Thanks.

    @brucethunder@brucethunder4 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Paul, I found it quite useful to still have the Eddi fully isolated. However your quite right there’s no requirement to have it fitted behind the isolator. In actual fact looking at the installation manual again, it looks like they recommend placing the isolation switch between the heater output and the immersion heater itself, which would make a lot more sense and be a much tidier installation as you could use a flex outlet. I think I’ll look at reworking it. 👍👍

  • Great video, however I have one concern. Where as the Iboost are recommended to be place near the immersion heater ie airing cupboard. However both the ImmerSUN and Eddi Myenergy are very similar units and require plenty of ventalation especially the Eddi due to its large heatsink on the rear. So logic would dictate, by placing theses units within a confined cupboard especially an airing cupboard that's becomes very warm may cause overheating to the Eddi's electronics .

    @35geordielad@35geordielad2 жыл бұрын
    • This was a concern for me too however there’s very little option for it to go anywhere else. A couple of things in its favour, it’s only running one immersion so that heat sink is not having to dissipate heat from two MOSFETs only one. The components themselves should be able to withstand much higher temperatures given they were baked on to the circuit board in an oven. Only time will tell, although it’s been some time already, and it’s still going (following one early life failure under warranty)

  • Hi, could you give an overview of your set up please? I'm currently renovating our home, and have a large solar array on the way, with a battery and eddi to the hot water cylinder like yourself. The original hope was to have the water in the hot water cylinder run our wet UFH and usable hot water, but we later realised that water cant be mixed (which i've seen you mention in the video) and you've put a thermal store? could you explain how it works/if theres anything you'd do differently? the easiest option for us now is probably to have the UFH/rads connected to the gas, and hot water cylinder with eddi for usable hot water. Because of the size of my array however, i was hoping to be able to offset some of the UFH running costs by using excess solar but not sure it can be done? Thanks

    @Kanabaro@Kanabaro Жыл бұрын
    • A thermal store is relatively old tech now I haven’t seen that many companies offering them now. It was just what my home had when we bought it, however I like it and have no intention on replacing until I can switch to a heat pump. Essentially the boiler heats the hot water in the tank which is used for the central heating. That body of water heats hot tap water by passing cold water through a coil in the tank. The benefit is the tank acts like a buffer for both central heating and hot water. This means the boiler and eddi can heat the volume and it will benefit both heating and hot water usage. However the water in the tank will be seriously hot, 70 degrees plus, which isn’t good for underfloor without some kind of mixing down. Best consult a heat geek as I’m not an expert in central heating I just know what I have :) anyway good luck in the refirb!

  • Hi Evlain, thanks for the video's ref the eddi unit. I'm considering fitting one but have a question with ref to using with a gas boiler. I have a current solar PV and battery system. I use gas for heating the hot water not immersion. My question is, in the summer months when the eddi has heated the water via the immersion (once the battery is fully charged) when the gas timed programme kicks in, will the boiler switch off if its senses the water is hot enough already ? hope that makes sense. Thanks Roy

    @roymartin6@roymartin62 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, the primary heat source for my home is also gas. In the summer the boiler does much less work as a result of the eddi unit preheating the tank. Your gas boiler will be thermostatically controlled so will cut out at that temperature. The immersion heater should have a separate thermostat on it.

  • Hi, liked the video, good installation. Can I ask how is eddi connected to the mains supply to detect the excess. I will assume it's by a clamp and I suspect its wireless. Can you confirm and maybe a short video! I currently have solar cache with a display next to the inverter so I can still monitor, if I install eddi or solar iboost, but having seen your vid and potentially getting an electric car, I think eddi does the trick. My solar cache diverter has stopped working so I'm now heating the hot water tank via a spur switch, it works and no safety issues or overhead cables. Looking forward to your reply and if you dont mind how much to buy eddi and do you recommend a site. I've just had my annual fit payment of 370 quid which will soften the blow,

    • Hi Paul, great questions and good idea for a video, I was thinking of doing one on the whole setup. Much like the iboost Eddi can use a wireless unit harvi to send consumption data. Unlike iboost it’s not included with the eddi. By default you would need a hardwired connection back to the eddi, so it’s an extra £50~ for the harvi. I bought most stuff direct from myenergi. I think the myenergi stuff is good for geeks not so good for people who want simple setup, it’s ultra flexible.

  • Thanks for the video Iain. We are having an EDDI installed into our solar PV system in a week or so. I have a question..... Your video suggests you have not used the thermostat input of the EDDI. Do you have the immersion heater via a stat on the tank so that the EDDI cuts off when the tank is up to temperature?

    @stevengwilliam8096@stevengwilliam80962 жыл бұрын
    • Yes the immersion heater has an inline thermostat, which cuts off at a temperature you can define on a dial. Similar to this www.bes.co.uk/immersion-heater-11-thermostat-19766/ I don’t believe the eddi has a thermostat input, However it would be useful as it would potentially stop nuisance tripping caused by screws loosening over time caused by the heat.

      @eviain@eviain2 жыл бұрын
    • @@eviain Well you learn something every day. Just popped the metal cover off the heater and there is indeed a built in stat set to 60 degrees at the mo. Ace. That saves a job. You can get a thermostat input to the EDDI. Its an additional plug-in card and a temperature probe. I did not fancy the cable run for that though as the EDDI is going onto the same panel that my inverter and generation meter are mounted to in the garage under our distribution unit. Its a convoluted cable run. But your nugget of wisdom has saved me a World of pain.

Unfortunately one slight drawbacks is that it means if the safety trip on the immersion heater goes, this will also fool the device (any device) to thinking the tank its hot. @davidjaynethomas4668@davidjaynethomas4668 Жыл бұрын
    • Hi I think I get what you mean.. essentially you’ll need a ct on any circuit you wish to monitor individually. Today a lot of solar and batteries are installed together and use the same inverter. Which slightly complicates things. If you have separate batteries and solar (normally because they have been installed at different times) then you can fit a ct to the battery circuit solar circuit and one on the tail to the meter. That’s 3 in total. If you have a combined hybrid inverter that deals with both battery and solar then install a ct at the meter and one on the solar battery circuit. There’s more info here on what you can do depending on your setup www.myenergi.com/wiki/eddi-wip/installation-4/#BatteryStorageSystems

  • I am looking at getting one of these but I can’t see how they can lead to any savings? My off-peak go tariff is 7.5p kWh. My gas is 7p kWh. So if I was to heat my hot water cylinder up at 00:30-04:30 it would cost me extra to do so. Likewise, if I divert my excess solar to an Eddi, I will save 7p kWh gas but as I am on the a SEG tariff I will not be getting the 4p kWh for exporting the excess solar. So I am really only saving 3p kWh. At £500 supplied and fitted that is a lot of 3p’s to see a return. It might have worked great with FIT payments but not now, Or am I missing something?

    @jameslarwood5276@jameslarwood5276 Жыл бұрын
    • Possibly, on the FIT system your paid for generation however you use it. Ie if it is exported beyond your export meter (including into other parts of your home). If your readings are being calculated at your meter then that changes the financial benefit’s on your quoted rates. Although personally I would always try to off set heat generation by my boiler for purely environmental reasons, as environmental damage isn’t currently measured in pence per kWh.

    @coreyellisart6877@coreyellisart68772 жыл бұрын
    • Hi, if you don’t want to export then you need to consume all that you generate, which is usually unrealistic. For an example if your totally off grid, then once you’ve filled your batteries, heated your hot water and charged your car, your system would need to stop producing energy. Devices like the eddi basically make exporting energy the last resort, so minimising the amount you give back to the man.

      @eviain@eviain2 жыл бұрын
    • Using Zero export is not unique to America, it is also common in Africa and Asia yet it seems these power diverters doesn't work on zero export or off grid installations.
