There is a certain type of phone that has never been mega popular. With the influx of handheld gaming computers, have they all but killed the gaming phone? That's what we're exploring today alongside a bitesized review of the ASUS ROG Phone 8.

Blowing $2k every five years on phones that ALWAYS die or break in some unforeseen way. Like the SoC becomes useless. Or the touchscreen stops working properly. Why is glass on both sides? Use plastic on the back it’s lighter. I’m completely over form over function design.

    • If devs start utilizing the mobile platform to make legit game ports/versions, we could see a reason for such a thing. Phones already support controllers as well as display to external monitors, which means they’d work perfect for gaming casually. The mobile game scene needs to grow and there’s no doubt it will once the money-hungry companies’ products get snuffed out by actual quality. Imagine being able to play a AAA title, something like Zelda Totk, on your phone instead of having to buy an entire game console/PC! There is simply too much potential for it to not be utilized at some point.

    • @@jmgonzales7701 The Xperia play came out at a time when phones were only just starting to become mainstream and Sony already had the PSP to sell at the time so it kinda makes sense they didn't push the concept further even though they probably could have. Sony could totally start a mobile gaming revolution right now if they made an effort to get their games on mobile devices along with consoles and PCs, since phones are much more prevalent now, but it would be a pretty big decision on their part for multiple reasons. I think that in order to get a true mobile gaming comeback we need SOME major company to push it, like Meta is doing with VR gaming. Sony could hire game studios specifically for developing mobile versions/ports of their titles (like they probably did with Resident Evil on IPhone) and i'm sure that would cause people to buy and play their games more if they did. However, I think it would be a rock and a hard place for Sony on the hardware side because the phones that people use already are not hyperfocused on performance like the game consoles/handhelds that Sony would want to make, thus forcing Sony to either not create a phone at all or to insert themselves into that part of the market at the same time by creating a very solid phone themselves which would be a whole other can of worms. They COULD also create an android-based handheld made to play the mobile versions of these games better than almost any phone on the market and that could appeal to people, but at that point it's not even phone gaming, it's handheld gaming and the phone hardware would catch up in a few years! It would truly be awesome to see Sony do something like this but i guess only time would tell. Their best option is probably creating a fairly compact handheld that can very comfortably play the "mobile" versions of their game ports at high resolutions and then be like "surprise! You can use your phone to play these games too, they just wont be as good on there compared to the Sony Handheld!" Either that happens, or some REALLY good game comes out on mobile that people are all wanting to play and causes more devs to want to make games on there too, kickstarting quality mobile gaming. I really want to see an indie dev team or even AAA studio create a truly console-level experience for everyone on mobile so something like this can happen.

  • Fun fact: the Nintendo Switch is powered by an underclocked Tegra processor from 2017. Most midrange and high end mobile SoCs could probably beat the Switch by a wide margin in terms of graphical fidelity, but the business model of mobile games and the lack of a standard hardware configuration would make it hard to put a game with a console/PC like graphics in a phone.

  • I bought a Red Magic 9 Pro mostly for its design (Snowfall) and uninterrupted display without camera notch. I was going to get the S24 Ultra but I saw way too many compromises that don't make sense on a 1500€ phone, namely the lack of aptX codecs in order for Samsung to sell you their galaxy buds, which I'm not into and I'd rather use my IEMs, and it is also unforgivable on such an expensive phone and nobody talks about it. The rather low capacity battery (the Red Magic has a 6500 mAh battery compared to 5000 mAh on the S24U) was also a factor in my decision, although not as bad as the exclusion of the aptX codec. Another nice thing about the Red Magic is passthrough charging which I don't think the common flagship has. For someone who does emulation which is my case, I find this feature quite nice since it allows you to connect the phone directly to a power bank for example, and not run out of battery and you can keep swapping power banks if they run out. Mobile gaming does suck, the native games that is, I find gaming phones the most useful for hard to run emulators such as PS2 and Switch. Yes a flagship such as the S24 Ultra could run it, but it will throttle after a couple of minutes and give you awful 1% lows in fps compared to a better passive cooling system which is usually found on gaming phones. I got this one for 900€ (16/512) instead of the 12/512 S24U which costs 1400-1500€ where I live, and yes while it is still expensive, I believe there's value in these phones still due to the features I mentioned. If cameras and nearly decade long updates are very important to you, then there's value on a flagship for sure, but I think these points are often overlooked when comparing performance and saying gaming phones do not offer anything new since they run on the same SoC. ...And yeah it has the headphone jack, which is a nice addition and something considered premium at this point apparently. My only gripe with this phone is the lack of SD Card slot (which basically no flagship offers at this point, other than the Xperia), and being unrootable for the foreseeable future.

    @Nunoflashy@NunoflashyАй бұрын
    • This. Also if you're into Insta 360 cameras, on phone video editing is extremely resource heavy. Phones with dedicated cooling can handle it without thermal throttling. Sometimes the games are good (Genshin, Star Rail, from what I hear also punishing grey raven etc). But it's all just gacha shit. There are no good games in the traditional sense. That's why people will laugh at you if you say you're a gamer, but you only play on the phone. Because the quality of games is just garbage, except for ports, emulation and gacha. There's nothing wrong with expecting GTA, as long as people don't also expect GTA v graphics? (Don't arguably that could also be possible...). The PSP had Voice City Stories. Was a decade ago. You can play high end mobile games just as well for hours between a ROG Phone, an S24 Ultra or an iPhone 15 PM. Zero difference. Well, the iPhones usually overheat and slow down to hell but well, you got the point. We are limited by the SoCs and high end phones all have the same SoC so whatever companies do it translates to 1-2 fps diffence AT BEST. And 99% of mobile games have low graphics on purpose so every phone can play them. The only reason for ultra high performance nowadays on phones is high end emulation or heavy video editing.

    @azenyr@azenyrАй бұрын

  • There was a hot minute where we really thought we could collapse all our computers into one device, so having a device that is made for all purposes could save money, but this is proven to not be the case. Growing up, Dad had work PC's, we had a home PC, family friends had PDA's and we had CD players, eventually iPods, and we had gameboys, eventually PSP's. Each item we had, had a character to it. That thing had a specific use, and it does help a bit with our monkey brains that each is basically a highly advanced tool for a specific, albeit complex, task. Then, after consolidating cellphones, music players, and primary internet interface into the smartphone, you can see the attempt to keep on going. Razer had an add-on for their phone in which you can just insert it into a very thin laptop, literally a keyboard and screen, and use that razer as a laptop. I have friends that basically work through their phone, so the big folding-screen devices do a lot in that space. I do wonder if the logical end of "true all-in-ones" are progressing into being niche rather than an ultimate goal for tech development. like, others' mileage will certainly vary, but i just couldn't play games on my phone. i used my phone for phone things, and swapping between an immersive game from the flitting around of phone use got really cumbersome, and that's just for what's on offer from phones. They really don't compete directly with Steam and Epic because they don't have to. Steam and Epic don't make cellphones that other brands must pay rent to exist on. Apple and Android do. and what would be the point if they did? why do we need everything on one device? if you're a kid, and all you got is one technology to exist on, then sure, it's a bigger problem, but when its your own money, i see the pull of having multiple devices made to do their specific tasks very well more and more appealing.

    • @@ronaldmcdonald6067 The S23 FE is the worst FE yet since it uses the previous year Exynos 2200 or the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip that were used in the S22 instead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that was used globally in the S23. However the S21 FE (which is the one I own) uses the Snapdragon 888, which was the same chip as the rest of the S21. In fact, in the EU they used the Exynos 2100 for the S21 lineup but for the S21 FE we got the Snapdragon 888 which was a bit better. So, in that regard the S21 FE was actually a slight upgrade over the S21/S21+/S21 Ultra. The S20 FE (the first of its kind) also followed this formula. The only really bad thing about the S21 FE was the fact that it was released a bit too late compared to the S20 FE.

These games are simple mobile phone games but they can be addicting, and the way the game levels are staged means that disruptions mid game feels like nothing, you can always pause and return later. • FINALLY THANK YOU SOO MUCH BRO I remember talking about these when Windows released the first Windows phones and wonder why they wouldn't use a existent Windows platform with LTE, VOICE, MSM integrated.. instead they create a new system that had zero compatibility with any Android apps! Same thing with the new gaming phones with up to 12 GB of ram! And snapdragon slowly catching up against Nvidia and AMD so... Why not create an actual Windows phone?? Luckily there so me indie developers working on a Linux phone so let's hope that one works in less than a year

  • Only reason why I want a phone for gaming is that I will always carry it around with me wherever I go, but a gaming handheld is too big to lug around everywhere I go, and it will ONLY be used for gaming, but still be the same price (over here in Australia an ROG ally or other handheld gaming PCs are the same price or atleast very similar price).

  • A normal phone with flagship soc will deagrade it's performance and battery cover time due to heating. And sometimes u can't enjoy gaming at highest settings or higher charging speed sometimes because of overheating. And some phones have low durability which fail bend tests. Red magic solves all those problems with A effective cooling fan built it in.

  • The video makes valid points and i agree with most of them. But what i found weird was he played jetpack joyride and hill climb racing which are not very demanding at all. In europe and in north america, gaming phones probably dont have much use cases currently but in asia its different. People in india dont buy ROG phone because its expensive and there are cheaper performance centric options. If in any time in the future, the red magic is launched in india with aggressive pricing then its going to sell like hot cakes.

  • well , for the first time decided to not throw 6 -800e on a phone anymore and go for repair myself, Zenfone 9 glas display cracked but display worked, bought a battery frame and a full display plus frame for 141e , everything went well and now i have my old (1.5year ) phone in a new clothes 😂, had the white version now i have black with red, battery also ordered however i will change it in half or a year because i charge properly and the oem it's very good even after 1.5 years thanks to stable and limit charge from asus , because nobody makes tiny phones today who knows how many years i will keep it, this phone it's like a toy for me 😂 unbelievable small but with a big battery compared to s23,s24 series

  • None of these phones I would ever consider “premium” and justify their $1K or even a $400+ priced phone. I still use a Oneplus 7T Pro, gaming on it still feels good. Sure it can stutter but never crashes unlike my iPad 8th gen. Runs games fine but some games aren’t well optimized. I thought about upgrading my phone to a Motorola Razr 40 or 40 Ultra but I’m gonna hold back another few years. I’ve been holding back on getting a Steam Deck or even a Rog Ally and honestly I may get the latter just for easy access to Windows rather than have to install a bunch of stuff or workaround Steam OS to download a game available on Epic or not in any store.

  • I gotta' be honest here, between how predatory most mobile gaming is, and the influx of better handheld systems, I don't even play games on my phone anymore. I've wiped off all but the few that I keep as time wasters for when I have to wait somewhere and I don't have my Steam Deck with me.

  • My rule is get the best phone possible for around $500 and with Android, you typically have tons of options. I current have the combination of a Pixel 6 and a Rog Ally. I don't game at all on the Pixel even though it's capable of running most Android games well. When I upgrade it'll be a stacked midrange as my Ally handles all my gaming and even the Tensor 1 in my P6 is already OP for the typical phone app.

  • I absolutely love my Steam Deck, idc that my 3080ti desktop or even my 13 inch x13 flow with a 3050ti largely outpower it or the fact that my phone can run most of the games that I emulate on my Deck. There's something about having a dedicated handheld device with zero restrictions for gaming that's just magical. Especially when it's a high refresh rate OLED

    @m.devellis@m.devellis12 күн бұрын
    • I've had the Deck for about 2 months and I think I've emulated(and finished) more games on it than I ever have any other device I've owned combined. Plus I think my total playtime between all of my devices is like 9:1 vs my other devices

      @m.devellis@m.devellis12 күн бұрын
    • Devices like the Ally are nice but I think one of the biggest reasons I use my Deck over my much more powerful and nearly as portable laptop, is the fact that it doesn't run Windows. SteamOS is just straight up, no nonsense, right to the point, just press A and go 90% of the time. I love it
