For the small amount of words, I suppose they translated that from some language that condenses entire words or ideas into single simbols, wich, at the same time admits different interpretations, like Chinese or Japanese using kanji. There were several missing words to complete the original phrase, and the few ones there didn't make any sense, lol

    • Even a direct English to Spanish in Google translator is so bad I wouldn't even call it a translation, but rather "bulk processing bilingual dictionary". A short sentence might come out somewhat right, except that 70% of the time it gets 100% of the prepositions wrong. But the moment you have two linked sentences or one level of subordination, Google is unable to respect very basic grammar rules or to choose the correct meaning of a word considering context.

Intended English: "She was looking kinda dumb, with her finger and her thumb in the shape of an L" Correct Tagalog: "Sa kanyang daliri at hinlalaki na hugis L, siya ay parang mangmang"*² 2) Written Tagalog: "Nag-aral ka, alam mo. Sa animnapung porsyento ng mga kaso, gumagana ito sa bawat oras." Translated to English: "You studied, you know. 60% of the cases, this is working every time." Intended English: "They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time, it works every time." Correct Tagalog: "Nagsuri sila, alam mo ba?*³ Sa animnapung porsyento ng pagakakataon, gumagana ito palagi." 3) Written Tagalog: "Alamin sa pagbikas. Nagbebenta siya ng mga shell sa baybayin." Translated to English: "Know by pronunciation. She sells shells by the shore." Intended English: "She sells seashells by the seashore." Correct Tagalog: "Siya ay nagbenta ng mga kabibi sa baybayin"*⁴ 4) Written Tagalog: "Mayroon mga bagay na hindi mo mabibili ng pera. Para sa iba, may pangunahing card." Translated to English: "There are things you can't buy with money. For others, there is primary card." Intended English: "There are things money can't buy. For everything else, use MasterCard." Correct Tagalog: "May mga bagay hindi maaring mabibili ng pera. Para sa mga ibang bagay, gumamit ng MasterCard."*⁵ 5) Written Tagalog: "Ang kapangyarihan ay sumasa iyo." Translated to English: "May the force*⁶ be with you." Intended English: "With great power comes great responsibility." Correct Tagalog: "Malaking kapangyarihan, malaking responsibilidad." *¹another possible words for "pipi": stupid, mute *²impossible to preserve phrase order without changing the context: subject and object swapped positions. *³must be changed into interrogation sentence to preserve context. *⁴it is impossible to preserve the intended tongue twister to Tagalog. *⁵There is no translation of MasterCard to Tagalog. * ⁶other words possible from "kapangyarihan": power, spirit Notes: • All pronouns are gender neutral in Tagalog . All female pronouns are interchangeable to male pronouns, depending on context. • The order of words are preserved as much as possible to demonstrate the impracticality of translating word-by-word. • Tagalog shares most alphabet, grammar rules, and punctuation rules with English, partly due to Philippines under USA colony for 47 years. Part of the reason why most native English speakers can learn Tagalog quite easily, and vice versa. • Tagalog are pronounced exactly the same way as English, except all consonants are pronounced "hard" (no "j" will be pounced as "g"), and all vowels are short. • Tagalog will only work in Manila. Philippines have 170 dialects, 8 of them are major dialects (including Tagalog). Theoretically, it is possible for Filipinos not to understand each other in their native tongue. • Be assured: even Filipinos in remote mountains can understand simple English. Therefore, do not hesitate to switch back to English when lost for words.

  • For some confused about why some of the google translates don't match, if you listen they say it gets progressively harder because they are filtering it through MULTIPLE languages before reaching the final one. Like for the MasterCard one, they said it was translated through FOUR different languages, which means it started with English, then went to some other language, then some other language, then went to some other language, THEN translated to Spanish. Hence why it doesn't match the direct google translation. So the sentences get more and more like gibberish as the video goes forward.
