I feel bad for the Filipino participants, Google translate is notoriously bad at directly translating Tagalog/Filipino even without the added layer.
When I read "Ang kapangyarihan ay sumasa iyo", and then Carol said 'force be with you' at 11:15, I immediately thought it was from star wars. I never would have guessed it translated to with great power comes great responsibility.

First of all, it is a Google translate challenge to see if native speakers can get it. So they gave it the way Google translated it. Second, I think they are bright enough to make the connections between letters even if they aren't attached. It is harder but possible.

I still use it to translate some words I don't recall in the moment or to check the spelling from Spanish to English and in the process I notice how bad is still is, and common errors such as bad verb conjugation, words that have nothing to do with what I wrote on the other language,etc...

It's good, the only reason the last few were bollixed was that they were running through multiple languages. Each language is unique with its own nuances and idiosyncrasies, and English being as messy a language as it is structurally, I can see how it might exacerbate problems.
Man, as a spanish speaker I can say that 60 percent of the cases it wasn't well written. Those girls did more than they were able.

Not at all. For the small amount of words, I suppose they translated that from some language that condenses entire words or ideas into single simbols, wich, at the same time admits different interpretations, like Chinese or Japanese using kanji. There were several missing words to complete the original phrase, and the few ones there didn't make any sense, lol

Even a direct English to Spanish in Google translator is so bad I wouldn't even call it a translation, but rather "bulk processing bilingual dictionary". A short sentence might come out somewhat right, except that 70% of the time it gets 100% of the prepositions wrong. But the moment you have two linked sentences or one level of subordination, Google is unable to respect very basic grammar rules or to choose the correct meaning of a word considering context.

I dont know about the second one, but machine map actually made sense to me, there are a lot of languages where map has a word similar to card (like in russian map is karta) and credit card is often call automated card which might have been changed to machine somewhere along the way
A little comment about the arabic language: the letters and words were backwards, because arabic is written from right to the left unlike most other languages, and the letters should be written attached to each other not seperated. So as a person whose arabic is her first language, it was a bit hard even for me to read the sentences that were displayed on the screen.

The Tagalog and Spanish translations are bad. Google still needs to fix this.
Most of the problem is going through multiple languages to get there. Direct from English to Spanish or back is usually pretty decent.
We had BALBAL in Tagalog so its impossible so many meanings and words that has no use if translated

@@marciarodriguez5109 They weren't mistakes, they were "made" on purpose, that's what Google Translate does when you translate the same phrase over and over in different languages, that's the challenge, recognizing the phrase even with it's bad translation. for everyone saying that some of the sentences were wrong or missing words, you do realize that they used google translate and it's not the most reliable source for translating whole sentences. and I know what I'm saying because I study 4 languages in school and I have used google translate a couple of times for school assignments and let me just say that the teacher did not appreciate my hard work
Being a trilingual person myself (Portuguese, English and Spanish) I can 100% say that it was IMPOSSIBLE for Sheila and Brittany to get that last sentence. Simply not enough words and the ones that were there made no sense.

Actually, that's not true. Companies frequently do translate their names in different languages, in order to fit the local customs or culture. However, doing a direct translation is usually a recipe for disaster - with Chinese being the notable exception.
for your info, arabic is written from right to left on contrary to english.. also most of the sentences were translated horribly wrong, I mean I use arabic everyday and couldn't understand what they say... on another note that was soo fun to watch

I use Reverso Context or Linguee, as a translation student, those translators are much better because they use the context instead of literally translating the word/words

The Mastercard line was poorly translate. Mastercard doesn't have a translation into Spanish. We call it Mastercard or Tarjeta de Credito
actually, you can get a credit card from Mastercard, but is not a translation since you can also get it from other companies.

I speak spanish and 3 out of five in the spanish the translator was saying nonsense like in the one with the case of the studies. Studies is " estudios " and the translator said "estudiaste" which means YOU STUDIED and the one from spiderman had a 0% of coincidence
Also the one of the master card it was almost acurate until the end where it said " mapas de maquina" which means "machine maps"

For some confused about why some of the google translates don't match, if you listen they say it gets progressively harder because they are filtering it through MULTIPLE languages before reaching the final one. Like for the MasterCard one, they said it was translated through FOUR different languages, which means it started with English, then went to some other language, then some other language, then went to some other language, THEN translated to Spanish. Hence why it doesn't match the direct google translation. So the sentences get more and more like gibberish as the video goes forward.
Can you go a little more in depth with your explanation please, its all a foreign language to me.
