  • My grandparents on my dads side have a bunch of sheep. Apparently they are a kind that dont really need to be shorn and they cant really harvest wool. I suggested making special jackets without knowing that. Felt a little dumb but its awesome visiting them once in a while now that we finally can travel to see them for the holidays. Last year there were a couple babies rejected by thier mother so while i was visiting i got to bottle feed a baby lamb.

    @dabois8280@dabois82806 ай бұрын
    • I'm guessing your grandparents have a hair breed of sheep. Some sheep breeds have hair that they shed like cats and dogs. Yes, mothers who reject their own lambs are a problem for shepherds. If the mother develops a habit of rejecting her lambs, my parents would cull a ewe like that cause she was failing at her ONE job. Mother ewes are supposed to bond with their lambs. If they reject their own lambs, the lambs will likely die unless the shepherd bottle feeds them. Ewes can smell and know which lambs are theirs and which aren't. Ewes will kick away and refuse to allow a "wrong smelling" lamb nurse on their udder. Sometimes, they mess up and reject their own lambs, which is why the shepherd needs to bottle feed the rejected lamb &/or force the ewe to allow their lambs to nurse, which is time consuming and difficult for the shepherd. (Source: I grew up on a sheep and hog family farm)

      @jessicaharris1608@jessicaharris160812 сағат бұрын
    • @jessicaharris1608 they rejected a couple that season because it was winter and they gave birth to 2 at once in a winter storm. The mothers kept one and left the other so we took them inside so they wouldn't freeze

      @dabois8280@dabois828011 сағат бұрын
    • @dabois8280 Sounds familiar. My parents had a sheep breed that gave birth in the colder months. I recall many times that my mother would bring a cold lamb into the house to warm up before attempting to get it to nurse on the mother. Sometimes, only one lamb would be cold, but my mother would bring both lambs inside; otherwise, the mother might accept one lamb but reject the one that was cold and taken indoors. We had an efficient wood stove for our winter heat. Mom would turn the reclining chair towards the stove and wrap the lambs in rag towels and sometimes a wool blanket too, to warm up the lamb(s).

  • I never thought I'd like to watch sheep and other animals of that type get shered but it's very addictive cuz of the loving gentle way you talk about them and handle them to insure they are as comfortable as possible , make them feel so much better afterwards!! Your awsome at what you do !!

    • it’d be better if she stopped breeding them tho… imagine if one of them ran away and because they were bred to grow long wool they get so big they get stuck on a thorny bush or fence and die because they needed humans to trim them

      @judas1523@judas15232 жыл бұрын
    • @@judas1523I don’t believe they breed them. I believe they just go by farms and shorn the sheep based on what’s been said in the videos. If they did the breed sheep I’m sure they wouldn’t let them get a place that some of these sheep get to - like where they’re in pain from not being shorn for so long.
