Loads of people misunderstand the final battle. “Aang should just take Ozai’s life,” or “the Lion Turtle gave Aang an easy and convenient escape.” No. The Lion Turtle gave Aang a way to test himself. It didn’t tell Aang what to do, but instead told Aang that if he were to try to bend Ozai’s energy, that he couldn’t do it if there was doubt in him. No one else could have done it but Aang because he refused to compromise on what he believed in. It’s a test of faith.

  • A lot of people give Aang a hard time for not killing Ozai. But there's ONE line from Ozai that I think solidifies WHY Aang was in the right to spare him. “You’re weak, just like the rest of your people. They did not deserve to exist in this world, in my world! Prepare to join them. Prepare to die!” That line alone, shows us what a lot of the in universe characters think of the Air Nomads. That even though they helped out other nations, stayed out of conflict, and often revered...Not only do people in the real world see them as WEAK for being nonviolent, and choosing peace over war....People in universe saw them as weak too. Ozai saying they didn't deserve to live in his world, shows us why Aang had to be the better man. It could've been done a bit better, but Aang had something to PROVE to not just his friends, but the WORLD that what he stands for, what his PEOPLE stood for MATTERED. And that they weren't WEAK because of it. If Avatar Aang had killed Fire Lord Ozai...it truly would've been the death of the Air Nomads. Aang would've been the one to fundamentally wipe them from existence. Not to mention, when it comes to taking one's bending, I'd say that's a worse punishment for a bender than death. You're stripping part of their identity away. Katara had to convince Aang not to use it willy nilly in the comics, for that very reason; Aang might not be killing their physical self...but by taking one's bending he's essentially killing their spiritual core. Their soul.

    • What’s interesting is that this desire to prove something, the desire to show that the air nomad’s ways are not weak and thereby preserve their essence - is the very selfishness that Avatar Yangchen was talking about. Ultimately, Aang chose his desire to preserve and prove his people’s philosophy over the collective safety of everyone else. He may have proved that his ways matter, but without the deus ex machina that is the grand turtle, he would’ve ultimately kept everyone still in danger of the fire nation. This is why the whole “bend sealing” was such a miss for me; it took away Aang’s agency in making the hard decision and gave him an easy way out. I would’ve loved to seen how Aang’s decision to spare Ozai plays out had his bending not been taken away.

      @terrykim2748@terrykim27483 ай бұрын
    • @@terrykim2748 Oh it definitely should've been setup better and not just with two mentions of lion turtles here and there. This is why my biggest gripe with ATLA is that the Genocide is kind of an afterthought. In The Northern Air Temple, they do touch on Aang's disgust of the villagers having taken over the temple, destroying his history and home (in his point of view). But after that, it's kind of never really touched upon. Not even when Appa was stolen. I feel like that episode really could've dove into what it MEANT to be THE last Air Nomad Avatar. What that meant for the world, for Aang. Cause bro was ready to just ABANDON his friends to look for Appa in a HUGE expanse of desert. And his rage had taken over. And that made him scary. I think he honestly should've accidentally killed a Sandbender in his rage. THAT would've really helped solidify his stance against killing Ozai.

      @TheRibottoStudios@TheRibottoStudios3 ай бұрын
    • It would have been weaker to kill him because it's such an easy option if you're able to just do it. It should be hard to kill, at the very least. And even harder to stop someone without killing them. You would think people would be less harsh on police if they REALLY had the mindset of "just kill them". But no. That only leads to corruption. It's not our choice to make. It's different when you don't have a choice.

    • There’s a specific moment about one of Zuko’s rare attacks that I think calls back to the first Agni Kai we saw him do. Back with Zhao, Iroh called to Zuko to “break his root.” Firebending is reliant on strong stances and breathing. Zuko defeated Zhao by making him lose his footing, throwing him off balance. Zuko does the same here when Azula advances on him and that’s when the music stops and you see her roll over. That’s the moment he defeated her.

    • True that : - he used the Dancing Dragon techniques for a purer, calmer and more fluid use of firebending - aside from lightning redirection which is based on waterbending techniques, he also used more dynamic moves, jumping in the air to evade some attacks like an airbender - he also blocked attacks and countered when the moment was right, and practically remained on the same spot like an earthbender.

Not enough people talk about how Azula's slow devolution and fall into loneliness, insanity, and despair is one of the best villain story arcs in fiction that DON'T involve their redemption. Love that her downward-spiral mirrors Zuko's rise and also reflects everything he gains that she loses: A relationship with their mother, friends that don't fear him, and to add insult to injury she even sees herself get replaced as a "sister" by Katara immediately after her humiliating defeat. That's the wail of someone who just realized she's truly lost everything. It fits her personality as well, she was never going to rush into anything when the entire world was at stake! I think it made complete sense for her to only allow herself to consider it when she knew her loved ones were all safe

She starts to feel the pressure of this whole new role while her friends, who she had full control of just turned on her. She is about to control the whole nation and now for the first time in her life, seeing her friends betray her, she starts to see that maybe she cant control people like she thought she could. • Roku's mistake with sozion wasn’t that he should’ve killed him from the beginning. It was that he shouldn’t keep a closer eye on him and make sure he wasn’t alone. Sozion is firebender meaning he has passion and drive to achieve it. When passion is suppressed, any person can become frustrated that they still want to achieve what they want. And they won’t let anyone stop them. Sozion was only pulling from lesson fire, but not from the place of air which allows you to see the multiple possibilities, water that allows you to be more flexible and gain help when needed, and the earth that is about being patient. Sozion became out of balance, and on top of that he was a fire lord, a monarch. He was at a high status where he could help the world or make the world worse. Being a fire lord monarch majority means empty throne room and no one really to advise him. Sozin's original plan was to spread his wealth to other nations in a way, when suppressed by Roku, alone in his throne room, and only pulling from the lesson of fire (the achieving your passion) he fell out of balance and his dream became more about conquering the nations. So Roku knowing his sozion status, as an avatar and his friend, he should’ve stuck closer to him and advised him. Everything comes full circle in avatar. Everything in the avatar comes in full circle. So like the swamp guy and guru lessons: everything and everyone is connected. Time is an illusion and so is death. The four nations cover the entire world, team avatar has been running into the same people no matter where they go. And those people run into people that team avatar also have met. The white lotus meme bears just happen to be all teachers of team avatar. Zuko just happened to run into jet after they both separately met team avatar on their own. Suki runs into azula. Zuko just always seems to be running into ancestor Rokus reincarnation. Everyone and everything is connected. iro lesson on the four elements: each element has an important trait that when together it makes you whole. if you pull from one place your path becomes rigid and stale. You fall out of balance. This can happen to anyone. And this also happened to every villain in avatar and legend of Korra. To azula, ozi, zuko at some point, and sozion. Every lesson in Avatar comes back to haunt us in the series. And in life. Every avatar either succumbed to killing their villain or ran out of time to find a solution. They all sacrificed their morals and upbrings of the nations they were born into. They didn’t really bring balance. Like think about it, what if the reason for the next avatar being born in a new nation all the time meant that it was time to use those morals of that nation but on a cosmic avatar scale? in order to bring balance to the world. Aang was the only one who listened to the morals of his nation. And he found a way to win that brings balance to the world. Thinking like an air bender he found an outbox solution. Thinking like a cosmic being avatar, he took Ozi's fire bending away. The direct description of the avatar was that he needs to bring balance to the world. That includes ozi. From what we’ve seen in korra, a person not having bending can bring balance and a person having bending can also bring balance to that person. And therefore the world. And when you think about it. No element or nation was brought up on the morals of needing to kill. Just how to live life.

And watching people react to Avatar and then rewatching it myself made me realize something: when I watched Azula‘s downfall years ago, like many, there was a feeling of relief which was followed by an immediate feeling of sadness. Not particulary because of her trauma, because tbf. at 8 or 9 and couldn‘t fully grasp all of that, but rather because Azula became the character in the show, which I kinda started to respect the most because of her fighting prowess and ability to nearly always find a way. EVERY Azula fight has alteast ONE Moment where you‘re just thinking:“HOW is she doing this ?!“ or „How cool was this ?“ other Characters have that too but with Azula idk she just had that special extra 😂 And then to see her demise was kinda hard because it was specifically her who always found a way to get shit done.

In that moment his journey officially came full circle, because he stood firm and did what he believed in. Earth bending was the hardest for Aang to learn, so using it to defy advice from all the avatars, all his friends, all the common sense, in order to do what he believed was right, is a beautiful message.

You're gonna tell me it's best to throw out all the build up and genuine moments of Kataang just so Zutara can happen? It would be rushed as hell. If they were going to end up together, at least have that build up but at this point, all Zuko and Katara have shown each other before having a genuine friendship, was hostility and a grudge (Katara especially with the hostility and grudge).

Everything about the finale is golden and really just does so well being the end of the large journey and its amazing to see all of the growth of all the characters coming together. • Aang not killing Ozai actually shows how strong he is. It’d be easy to kill him, ESPECIALLY as the Avatar. Rather than take the easy way out, he stands by his teachings from the air nomads and does what’s right for him. And it’s honestly so much more devastating for Ozai to lose his bending imo

  • Well, it's been wonderful going on this journey with you guys. Even though most of you had already seen the show at least once, these reactions were still so fun. I'm really glad Maddie loved the show, so much that she even cried at parts in the finale and didn't know why. I always get emotional watching the last episode, because even though it mostly wraps up everything amazingly, it's also just sad to see it end. I'd be for ya'll reacting to Legend of Korra, but it seems like you don't want to, which is also fine. I hope Maddie and Addie will join in on future reactions. I know they'll probably be back for the live action, but it'd be nice to see them again on other reactions too. I'm very nervous about the live action, since this is one of my favorite shows of all time, but I'm hoping they'll do it justice. Anyway, thanks for these reactions guys!

    • You have every reason to be worried. Its netflix. They have pretty much ruined every anime live action adaptation they get their hands on. One Piece being a slight exception since the Japanese creator basically had to babysit them the entire time so they didnt screw with is IP. The og crators of Avatar left the neflix project since they didnt like the direction. With that all being said. Nothing NOTHING could be worse then the 2010 M Night film. That is possibly the worst movie of all time.

I really want you guys to react to Legend of Korra, it's kind of scaring me that studio gek hasn't reacted to any of the requests so far about it. It is it's own show and has way better villains than The Last Airbender. It's ok to have some issues with it not being like ATLA and stuff but it really grew on me.

  • The Avatar state is brilliantly shown for how terrifying it actually is in this fight. Because it's not JUST a huge power boost for the current Avatar. They become the embodiment of every Avatar before them, fighting as one, speaking as one, thinking as one. Imagine that - suddenly hundreds of past lives, all with the same sense of purpose, duty and necessity, become part of who you are. Imagine how small any one tyrant becomes, and the wrath they would feel at seeing another petty insect devastating the work they've devoted their existence to for thousands of years to such an extent that their current incarnation is forced to call upon all others for support. Aang is a sweet, gentle kid, but when forced into the Avatar state he becomes a ruthless fighting machine which systematically takes Ozai apart, renders a wrath filled judgement, and moves to execute him without hesitation. Because, to the Avatar state, Ozai isn't the big bad - he's one more bug ruining their carefully tended garden that needs to be stepped on so they can get back to peacefully tending the balance of the world. There have been countless before him, there will be countless more after him, and he's just one more name on a very, very long list of tyrants who met their end beneath the Avatar's Boot of Balance. The Avatar you're dealing with may be diplomatic, compassionate and understanding. They may be open to working with you, to build a world better than the one that made you feel like you needed control of it to be safe. But the Avatar State sees you as nothing more than a pest it needs to exterminate - it doesn't care for your motivations, your capacity to change or anything other than the fact that you poked the bear. And, to me, that's as much of a reason to be terrified of it as the fact that it can carve chunks out of continents and sail them out to sea as an island with less effort than it takes most people to row a boat.

Like really ? what about Aang makes you think he'd kill someone lmao that's not what his character is AT ALL Honnestly i'm 100% sure that even without the spirit bending deus ex machina Aang wouldn't have been able to find it in himself to kill Ozai.

    @tunderdiamant8651@tunderdiamant86513 ай бұрын
    • The issue is that he's needlessly riskin lives in not killing Ozai. If he hadn't gotten lucky with that rock Aang would've died. Again. There would be no more avatars as his connection was still broken and the Fire Nation would've destroyed the world and killed billions of people when earlier Aang could've won the fight by finishing Ozai off with his own lightning. Imo Aang doesn't get nearly enough criticism for essentially gambling with people's lives. He already started their fight with the disadvantage of mediocre mastery of 2 out of 4 elements and no access to the AS. Having died once already he should've known better quite frankly. Mercy and pacifism are nice, but only up to a point, the risk wasn't even remotely worth the reward here. Might make him a good airnomad and person, but a god-awful avatar. In sparing Ozai he also caused further trouble. Ozai nearly manipulated Zuko into starting a war over the colonies. Zuko's reign was also considered illegitimate as he beat neither Azula nor Ozai and both still lived. Resulting in the Fire Nation nobility repeatedly trying to off Zuko to reinstate Ozai. Imagine if they succeeded in killing him and Ozai became Firelord again...

  • "Wait, did he just forget about Katara?" that's something I feel like a lot of people didn't understand in the finale. Aang's chakra was 'forcefully" unlocked by Ozai, which allowed the other Avatars/the Avatar Spirit to "take over", just like on book 1 at the end with the Ocean Spirit. This was not Aang smashing Ozai, it was the other Avatars through the Avatar State. They would have used Aang's body to serve the "justice" they thought was right. But Aang took back control at the last minute. Because his Spirit is that strong. Strong enough to fight off Ozai's darkness, "unbendable", but also stronger than any Avatar Spirit. Aang is an airbender, through and through, and his most important fight was this one, keeping his beliefs and his people alive, despite everything that happened. When your people get genocided, you get hunted down, injured, almost killed, stripped of everything and everyone you've loved, it's easy to hate, to want to kill and destroy and call it justice. Heck no one would've judged Aang for killing Ozai if he did. But Aang never did, Aang would've hated himself had he killed Ozai, he would've lost his own balance and as it was previously said on the show, how can an imbalanced spirit bring "balance" and peace to the world? Aang, not allowing his life's evils to change him is his biggest strength and what makes his character so good storywise. And you know, as much as I love Katara taking down Azula, I would've really liked Zuko being faced with the choice, whether or not to kill Azula, to put him facing the same moral dilemma as Aang (esp since Azula was set to become Firelord, to be the "next Ozai"). The ending of the show when it comes to Aang is exactly according to what Iroh told him on book 2. Aang chose the love for his people over power and ultimate beliefs. He kept pushing for another solution that would align with who he is, and he found one.
