Mini Train ! Smallest public Railway
Sorry , no airplanes this time ! I could not resist and filmed this little wonder during my visit to one of Kent's top tourist attractions! It is Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway
The The railway was the dream of millionaire racing drivers Captain John Edwards Presgrave ("Jack") Howey and Count Louis Zborowski. The RH&DR has been drawing crowds since it opened in 1927 and now operates the most complete collection of one-third full-sized steam locomotives in the world. These small but perfectly-formed trains, take just over an hour to complete the full journey from Hythe to Dungeness but there are opportunities to get off and explore along the way too. The natural starting place for a journey on the RH&DR is at its station in the historic and pretty town of Hythe. It’s one of six along the track, which stretches 13 miles across the picturesque Romney Marsh to Dungeness, one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world, a place of other-worldly beauty and a designated National Nature Reserve.
The fleet of ten original steam locomotives remain in service, each covering up to 10,000 miles (16,000 km) a year. The RH&DR is still the only user of the 4-8-2 Mountain type locomotive in the UK, with No 6 Samson and No 5 Hercules in regular service.
With several stations in between, all within walking distance of the beautiful Kent coastline, the railway gives passengers an opportunity to explore this unique corner of Kent. Coast & country walks, with all manner of wildlife & flora to be seen, cycle rides, medieval churches and iconic lighthouses are all on your doorstep.

My dream is to have my own private railway just like this
that is one reason i buy lottery tickets
I have the same dream
Same brother
Me too
You're not the only one! 😊
Great to see that this childhood-memory of mine is still running, sixty years on !
I think I'm becoming one of those train people.
Ya mean an enthusiast, or a Gunzel?
How cool is this? Every town should have one of these!
This IS NOT A TOY. it was built for use as a public transport system and had both legally timetabled passenger trains, as well as freight ! And its 13 miles long (19 km) so connects a number of small towns along the coast. Just the land it stands on is valued at in excess of £150 MILLION, and its highly unlikely you would get a licence for such a public transport venture today.
I hope to start this trend. I want to make one for my town, but it seems like a pipe dream until I am done with university and actually learn how to make the trains and tracks.
@@TheStickCollectorlook at the reply above you
@@whatisthis6259 doesn't mean I can't be due diligent with it, I just want to feel like helping out. Obviously there would be permits and everything needed beyond any model railway club.
It's cool that this is a real commercial railroad that hauls revenue freight and passengers, and not a miniature scale railroad.
In WW2 the military used it to stock munitions along the coast.
It's technically known as "MINIMUM GAUGE" a reference to its usefulness as a viable commercial transport system !!!
It gets even more awesome at the other end of the line. Most of it is double tracked and Hythe has a turntable and loco shed. As well as the six Pacific's loosely modelled on LNER prototypes there are two Canadian outline locos that are very impressive. The pulling power of these small locos pulling these long trains on a 26 mile round trip is also impressive although helped by the fact that the country is as flat as a pancake so no gradients stop
I've been here before! This is the RH&DR, Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway~ My family and I are from the US and went to stay with a friend in the UK in 2011. We actually rode on the first engine in the video, "Southern Maid", and it was a blast! I really hope we can go back one day. Both me and my mom are in wheelchairs, and I was super impressed even this small railway managed to stay wheelchair accessible. The food at one of the stations on the line was to DIE for! Awesome scenery on a gorgeous loco. What more could you ask for! There was also a model railway museum on the line too!
Note: avoid the food then. Gotcha! 😂
Huh, he said he liked the food?@@davidtyler-ul9vw
"The Paris Agreement is clear - no more coal!" *picture of Southern Maid* "Okay I will make an exception but only because she looks very polite"
The ban does NOT include "Heritage" vehicles, for the simple reason you cannot inflict retrospective legislation on things that predate the law !!!!!
imagine taking this to work every morning then home every evening, best commute ever XD
A lot of people did. Indeed until recently the Railway operated a schools service morning & evening for hundreds of school children attending the Comprehensive State school in New Romney.

My first encounter with the RHDR dates back to 1968 ... Good to see that some things apparently stay themselves.
What super cool video 👍 I was not aware of this small train. Must be a popular place to visit. Thanks for the great information too. It would be worth a visit to go on a train ride, walk through the beautiful landscape and enjoy all those picterosque places.

It has been operating since 1927, running services along the Kent coast, connecting a number of towns. Those little locomotives weigh as much as 10 tons, and are known to be capable of over 50mph. I know I've driven most of them when I worked for the company back in the 1970's !!!
Me irl: looks alright My mind: this is the coolest thing I have ever seen in my lifetime
In Dresden (Germany) you have a phantastic Railway like that, since 1928 ! (2 steam locos an 2 akku locos, named "Parkeisenbahn Dresden")
In WW2 the line had Armoured Anti-Aircraft trains as it runs along the English Channel coastline.
The line in Dresden was NOT a public transport system. This railway is 19km long and connects a number of coastal towns, and was built to operate daily timetabled passenger trains as well as freight. Fish & Aggregates being the most common freight products that were carried. During WW2 because of its coastal location, it was taken over by the Military, and operated an Armoured "Anti-Aircraft" train which claimed to have shot done at least one Me110 !
Very entertaining and fun to watch. Thanks for posting this.
WOW! That REALLY gets up and GOES!!!
There are quite a few more lines like the RH&D Rlwy. in Britain! Just to name one - the Ravenglass & Eskdale Rlwy.
The Ravenglass & Eskdale is the same gauge, but that's were the similarity ends. The Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway Company was laid out across the level Romney marshes as a Double track Mainline, for speed. It operated publicly advertised passenger trains (and freight) all year round. Trains normally travel at a steady 30mph but are capable of speeds of up to 50mph, as Captain Howey proved, decades ago.
Really awesome loco ! I would add a cup holder for my coffee though .
That would be cool
There is a whole FLEET of these locos on that 13 mile long railway that connects a number of towns on the Kent Coast, and has been operating since 1927 !!!

The slip-side to this is of course the Dungeness Nuclear Power station, so here we have the two main power generation technologies at either end of the spectrum a stone's throw from each other.
This came up on my recommendations today so a bit late commenting. I went on a tour of the power station back in the last century. They use heat from the Nuclear reactor. To generate steam then use the steam to run the turbines to generate the electricity. So they are on a similar part of the power generation spectrum.
@@grahamsmith9541 I know how they both work, I was implying the difference between basically boiling a kettle to a nuclear reaction - those are the two concepts at either end of the spectrum. I think most intelligent people got that.
Oh my god, this is the best thing I've ever seen.

Well its been there since 1927, connecting the coastal towns along the Kent coast for 13 miles from Hythe to Dungeness !!!!

I lived in Kent and my parents would take me on this as a young boy (late 1950s/ early 60s. I subsequently took my daughter and now take the grandkids too. It was then and still is now a great day out. Fish and chips in the pub at Dungeness and the fabulous model railway at New Romney station.

The combination of fish and chips at Dungeness and exploring the model railway at New Romney station sounds like a perfect day out indeed. It's a testament to the enduring charm and appeal of these destinations.
What a pleasure!
10:08 lol the mini road crossing. so cute
- the "cute" crossing is exactly the same as you see on the main standard gauge lines.
There was a fatality on one of its crossings years ago
@@modelsteamers671- sadly, there have been a number caused by impatiant motorists.
@@pedantik yep.
NOT A "mini road crossing", this railway crosses a number of busy roads, in a handful of towns. And the law states road vehicles MUST give way to trains. Hence the crossings have barriers and warning lights like ANY road/rail crossing. These "little" locomotives weigh up to 10 tons, and we know from experience when they hit idiot car drivers, they destroy the car, and the loco come out virtually unscathed. The trains may be travelling at up to 30mph on certain crossings, & can be pulling a 100tons of coaches & passengers ! It is NOT A TOY many have made that mistake & been seriously injured or killed !!!
I love this train. It's beautiful and a mighty warrior on the tracks

Not the smallest public railway, the Ruislip Lido line is only 12" gauge.
It is the "Worlds Smallest Public Railway" .The Ruislip Lido is NOT a "Public Railway" only a pleasure ride in a park. The RH&DR runs for 13 miles along the Kent coast linking a number of towns, and when opened in 1927 it operated "Timetabled Public services" both passenger & freight, and had to comply with the Governments "Light Railway" laws which amongst other things required signalling & minimum services at stations. The locomotives weigh as much as 10 tons, and are regularly hauling trains of around 100 tons of carriages & passengers at speeds of usually 30mph. But they are capable of going significantly faster. Steam locomotives are effectively motorised BOMBS because even these small locomotives operate at 180psi. If one exploded it would destroy everything within a few hundred yards radius, buildings, people, wildlife & road vehicles. Which is why the Drivers have to have the same years of training as Drivers on the National ail network. Steam locos are of course "red hot" when in steam, & the most common injuries are by ignorant members of the public touching a loco & getting badly burnt. So the rule is "Look but don't touch."
