  • Need conical wheels, they will keep you on track without the flanges rubbing constantly, the flanges are mainly to prevent derailing from turns and bumps. It will also reduce the stress on the wheels. Your best bet is probably to either weld some cones and the support structures or buy the specially made wheels. If you somehow got a hold of 4 of the right type of rims, you could cut them in half and they'd be pretty easy to mount. Some cheap go-kart rims would work.

    @johns1307@johns13074 ай бұрын

(At 10:19 you can see the water tower and track switch in the background). From there they headed two miles in the opposite direction from the water tower, so roughly North-West. Their journey ended roughly here at the Goat Canyon Trestle Bridge Parking, maps.app.goo.gl/ULkeTEJnPb2YeMnu7. And indeed there are no significant turns on that route, only minor curves. The real challenge would have come a bit further up the track with a significant almost 180 degree curve

  • Ya know, they sell train cart wheels for way cheaper than that, even without switching to polyurethane. 3 minutes of searching, and I found a set some for $26 a pop on Zoro Select, and sets of 4 for a similar price elsewhere. I think you could redo this project with proper train wheels for less than the cost of replacing the engine. This is an awesome project, and it would be a shame to give up, when you're so close to success! One other idea: you could easily incorporate some friction brakes, applied either directly to the wheels, or to the track. One final thing to mention: it probably wouldn't be extremely difficult to devise a "reverse gear," if you switched from a chain to a tensionable belt-based system.

    @alden1132@alden11324 ай бұрын
    • I agree with the tension belts, but I also think more complexity probably isn't the thing you want many miles from help, in the desert especially. +1 to Train wheels though. Even the $200 ones are cheaper than doing all that work when you value your own time.

      @1SweetPete@1SweetPete4 ай бұрын
    • Also, train wheels have a specific geometry that keeps them on the track using a solid axle and mirrored bevels on them. The flange on the outside it just a safety in case something goes wrong with the wheels tracking.

      @FeedMeAQuarter@FeedMeAQuarter4 ай бұрын
    • @@1SweetPete I agree about added complexity being liability, especially in a remote, inhospitable environment, but part of the appeal of the idea I mentioned that I didn't expound upon is the ease of repair of such a system. A belt is easier to replace than a gear chain, and you can carry multiple sets with basically no extra weight. Hell, a leather belt could be used in a pinch in most such set-ups. Also, with the right set of belts, you can cut entire sections of the drive-train out if they give you problems. I've seen "bamboo carts" that use a similar idea that can be completely dismantled and removed from the track in SECONDS, axles, platform and engine in separate pieces, with a slip on belt. It's reduced complexity, when you take into account chains and adjusting tension.

      @alden1132@alden11324 ай бұрын
    • @@FeedMeAQuarter Indeed. The beveled wheels and flange were critical to making modern trains safe and workable. There's a lot of theory behind such a seemingly simple concept.

  • If you would like to try this again, I will give you a bit of info, train wheels aren't actually designed that way. There is a slight curve between the riding part of the wheel, and the flange. meaning it can navigate curves easier. the best thing to do is to rebuild the wheels entirely, because even without the broken wheels, it would have been very hard to navigate the curved without banging them up. If you need more context on wheel designs, search up a picture of railroad wheels and you will see what I mean.

  • Okay holy dang. You and I are newly instagram pals but I hadn't watched a full one of your videos until now. I have a best bud who I go build natural dams with and drink beverages. Some kind of obsession with scouting great stream locations, altering the ecosystem, shooting for the highest water level differential before it gets dark, before ultimately destroying our dam so we don't actually ruin too much of the earth. This video seems to have that energy and now I'm gonna go watch the rest of your entire catalog, thanks, very great, goood job.

  • the only thing that would make this better for a basic working machine is to make the wheels conical in shape. this would allow it to dynamically adjust and travel around bends/curves much smoother. even if it's DIY for them to reach said shape, it would be much better than the setup used for the wheels here.

  • Awesome idea. Rail is almost zero rolling resistance, super efficient. Can you source an old railroad handcar? Big strong platform and wheels. Add the electric motor and the platform is so solid I bet it could take a couple of comfy armchairs and you'll have a great little transporter !!!!

    • KZhead has a problem as the video documents a felony crime now classified as domestic terrorism by Homeland Security. It is felony trespass and interfering with transportation. Clearly the line isn't in service and it should be fine but the federal government doesn't have a sense of humor. The video can get KZhead into legal trouble and the creator put in prison. It is a stupid situation, but pirating the rails is highly illegal.

  • Yes, definitely do this again. TIP: I noticed you were using cylindrical wheels (bc they’re cheaper ik) but that might be why they broke down so easily. If you git conical wheels it’ll be more stable on the track. Just look up a youtube video of why train wheels aren’t flat.

  • For the next try, train cart wheels actually have a bit smaller diameter on the outside-most part of the cart. this reduces the wear and tear on the cart wheels greatly, as the cart just cradles side to side, which helps it navigate turns with lower pressure and pull on the bolted parts of the wheels. Or you should just put more engines.
