  • I love how Samson isn't actually evil or anything. He's just intimidating. And he still just tries to transport the passengers as quickly as possible and gets scared for his life when the bridge breaks. Lovely piece of animation!

    • I know right. While yes he is like a foil or rival to Linus, he isn't a villain. Just cause a character is a rival or foil doesn't make them automatically mean they are a villain or bad guy unless they do something that says otherwise. But like you said he doesn't do anything that would make him a bad guy or villain, as just because a character is intimidating doesn't mean they're a villain or bad guy.

    • @@sericsmith5770 Nah. Disney's short was pretty poorly animated, with a message/story that came across as artificial. There were only a few characters and scenes that were well animated, but it was mostly thanks to animation vets like Eric Goldberg and James Baxter. Since Disney got rid of their 2D animation department years ago, they had to outsource to other studios who are clearly less experienced. But this short however, was very well made. Disney should take notes.

      @TheRecklessBravery@TheRecklessBravery6 ай бұрын
    • @@TheRecklessBravery No, common misconception. Many think because even high end 3d has so many "automated" parts it's cheaper or easier, but it takes just as much work to and time to make 3d animation look good as 2d, even if the specifically challenging areas are different. THEN you have to add how much more rendering power it takes, and you need rigging artist and modelers and FX simulators in far greater number then with 2d. Now, BAD or cheap 3d animation can be inexpensive of course if you use stock and reuse to pay less people... BUT the 2d equivalent of that would be cheap Flash or other 3d puppet style animation, which would still be cheaper. The last 2d high end Disney fiilm, Princess and the Frog, cost half as much as their last 3d one to make. It's just b/c 3d was getting people into theatres that they stopped doing 2d

Baron’s a business man who sees Samson as the next big thing and thinks Linus’s best days are behind him, but if you read the newspaper at the end it tells how he managed to redirect funds from a memorial for Linus to restoring him And his daughter despite being named the railroad princess isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and helped Henry fill Linus to make him stronger. And she even helped repair him afterwards. It’s more interesting than them just being evil business tycoons like you often see in media

    • I interpreted it as the baron's daughter stepping in to help while the baron is too afraid, and the baron would have happily let Linus go to scrap, but had a change of heart because Linus saved his life. • I think one of the more interesting aspects of this is that Samson really is an objectively better engine. He only "fails" because the bridge he was crossing wasn't really meant to carry engines of his size, and at the end of the film you can see a more modern train passing by carrying an enormous amount of passengers, meaning that the baron was right when he called Samson "the future" of the train industry. Even still, Linus and Henry are still around doing their thing, even if they did get replaced in terms of utility they don't disappear completely and people still enjoy their service. I think it's a good message that change doesn't necessarily mean the destruction of the old; old things will still be around, even if it's only for our enjoyment.

  • As a lifelong fan of trains and train media such as Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends, the Little Engine That Could, and the Polar Express and of classic Disney animation, I've been highly anticipating this short for ages and it did NOT disappoint! Wonderful work, Mr. Chesworth. You and your crew should be very proud of what you've accomplished here. Absolutely phenomenal work all around.

I copied out the relevant part of the newspaper: *Samson Reassigned to Lumber Haul* "Some overhauling will be in order to ensure this kind of recklessness never happens again." Baron von Kapital assured the press. Samson, grateful for his rescue by the brave locomotive Linus, is said to be taking on long distance freight routes to compensate for the tremendous material loss of the bridge her played a role in disabling.
