Heat is also an important factor, which means wireless charging probably also increases battery health loss because of how much heat gets generated compared to normal charging
yes heat is a factor but everyone missed the most important clue. 14 pro display has 2000 nits brightness with always on. If you are mostly outside, it runs at that peak brightness. 14 pro battery is not big enough to sustain that load. So by mid day most people run out of battery and they recharge. On average people are doing 1.5 to 2 battery cycles each day. This did not happen before 14 pro. Apple really did not design the battery capacity well to handle the 14 pro display.

I do wireless charging on all my phones for years and I haven't seen much of a difference in battery degradation
Yeah I mostly use wireless charging and a year later it’s still 100% battery health.
Actually when you charge 20-80 you'll consume very little of your cycle, it's not linear. The 0-20 and 80-100 range is the most consuming

Problem is most phone OS does NOT let you stop at 80%. Presumably this is planned obsolescence. For android there is only apps that sounds an alarm to tell you to unplug your phone.

Magsafe charger took my iPhone 13 Pro from 100% to 89% in a year. At the same time, my old XS Max (never charged wirelessly) is still at 91%.
Interesting, but that’s just 2%, something I’m inclined to point at each generation’s battery more than how it’s charged.
@@SleepyPossums For full disclosure: I bought my Max in Feb 2019. Replaced it with 13 Pro in autumn 2021. Feels surreal that newer phone eats through the battery twice as fast.

Ampsentrix batteries are actually known as some of the best replacements, usually holding 80% of the batteries capacity after 800 charging cycles. Its the only brand ive used in the past that exceed usual standards.
Main question is why Apple provides iphones with 80% capacity battery at 500 cycles? Their macbook, ipad and watch all have 1000 cycles rated for 80% capacity so they are much better than in iphones? Why? So that people feel like they rather upgrade to new iphones as batteries get weaker quicker?

Before I was sooooooo careful on how much I was charging my phone because I wanted to preserve the 100% initial capacity. Now honestly I don’t care that much anymore. I just use my phone as I normally would. If the battery will give me problems I will decide what to do later on.

Right, it's a tool nothing more. If it does not keep up with my older phones regarding battery cycle, I don't care, either I will buy a new one or another brand.
I have a 2-year-old iPhone 13 and its battery is at 88% capacity. I’ve used the optimized setting on iOS ever since it became available, and I also try to keep it in the 20-80%. However, there’s only so much extra life that you can squeeze out of these things, so I don’t waste time obsessing over it. Like if I’m on the road and have limited charging opportunities, I’ll top it up when and where I can, regardless of its current level.
@@obi1shinobi Same! And also avoiding high temperatures which, as mentioned in the video, are a big battery killer. When I charge my phone, I elevate it on a frame rather than leaving it flat on the table. Then whenever possible I put it in front of an electric fan while charging.
So here is my point again. You two year old iphone 13 has similar battery degradation as one year old 14 pro. What is the real difference between the two. Answer is the display. 14 pro has 2000 nits with always on. Hence battery consumption is higher and hence need for more frequent recharging and more battery cycles.

How much stress is it worth to save a few bucks worth of battery life? After three or four years spend the $100 to replace the battery or spend the money to upgrade to a new phone. Enjoy your life. It's short enough already.

@@Fear.of.the.Dark.2000 nits display means nothing it hardly ever reaches that number.. You can have a 2000nit display running 400nits way more efficiently than a 800nit display at 500nits.
The battery health is meant to make you anxious and make you buy a new phone. Mind games.

If thats the case, why is apple lying about battery health? My iPhones dont show anything below 84% battery health, despite being literally unusable (battery runtime) and dangerous (blowing up, prone to burst/smoke) already. The only concerning thing they show is "Your battery does not allow high performance mode anymore". I once checked the battery health with Coconut battery and guess what... 84% is a BIG LIE, in fact the battery had already below 50% health!

Other lithium battery technologies last way longer as well. Those are simply not as energy dens.

I noticed the battery performance being way worse on my iphone 14 pro like.. a week in. I even looked up whether it was becoming a big issue that it would force apple to do a recall. Obviously not. I had the 13 pro right before it (which i would've kept, but had to give away to help out a friend) and my battery life wasn't obscene, but it did last longer than my 14 pro. Spotify is a big problem; these days i tend to put it on offline mode as much as i can, but of course that's hindering the use of the product. Anyway, im glad to see my suspicions being confirmed (albeit in a roundabout way, but still).
Must be an iPhone 14 exclusive issue to be honest, no issues so far with the iPhone 15 (non Pro) Im coming close to the 150 charging cycles (yes, i intentionally wasted battery cycles with stresstests) and im still at 100% health, but i also use exclusively the "80% Limit" setting on the 15 and avoid
Priceless research. After the first year my battery is still 90% strong as new. Getting this 14 Pro Max Battery replaced at $89 rather than buying an iPhone 15 Pro Max at $1200 makes a massive amount of financial sense. Especially since so many colors like gold are extinct.
Depending if you keep your phone for a long time. Let's say you keep your iPhone for 5 years. Maybe that $89 is it worth it anymore. There are more points of fair years because hardware doesn't last forever. If you do simple math maybe at that point you've used up most of the value from your phone. At that point you could probably even trade in or sell your phone.
90% after one year isn't great. I have 90% on my two year old iPhone Mini 13 which is charged at night and often during the day. There is something not right about the battery in the iPhone 14 Pros

Me and a friend upgraded around the same time, I got the regular 14 and she got the 14 pro max, we both use our phones in similar ways, I recently checked the battery health of both phones (keep in mind I upgraded on January and she upgraded early February), I had 100% and she had 92%. Maybe it’s just an issue with the 14 pro battery.

I’m not sure if you consider this fast but I use a 10w fast charger, if you were curious she uses a 30w charger but mostly uses the 5w charger she got with her 11.
Your post is another solid clue. What is the main major difference between 14 and 14 pro max? Hint: it is the 2000 nits display with always on. I bet your friend is recharing once in mid day because her display is consuming the battery way too quickly as the capacity is not enough relative to display power consumption.
Yeah I guess you are right, she disabled promotion which defeats the point of getting a pro iPhone so I guess it’s the brightness paired with a slightly smaller battery. She mostly charges it in the evenings.

This would never be an issue if cellphones still had user replaceable batteries where you just remove a back cover and slap in a new battery. Why can't cellphone manufacturers still do this? The phone will still look cool with an easily replaceable battery. Do you get all concerned about the battery life in a flashlight? Of course not. When the battery gets low you just stick in a new battery. It might take one minute. No special tools needed with the skills of a brain surgeon to do it. This will also cut down on e-waste. People are now judging the useful life of their cellphones based on the battery life. If the battery starts losing its charge quicker, rather than having the phone surgically opened and a new battery installed, with possible issues afterward, just get a new phone. Of course, that's what Apple wants. The iSheep line up every year for new phones whether they need a new one or not.
Not everyone buys the latest iPhone each year . Personally I think any flagship phone either apple or android is ridiculously overpriced. Many cheap phones for £250 sometimes cheaper work very well . I agree about the battery situation. All phones should be able to be easily replaced like they used to be
@@emward6858 The best features were user replaceable batteries and the ability to add and remove a MicroSD card. Now it's basically impossible to find either.
I love this analysis and educative nature of the content. I'm using the phone constantly in Low Power Mode, made automation (Shortcuts app) that turns it on again when reaching 80% charge I'm very happy. BTW - I had exactly the same problem with fast drain on iPhone 14 Pro. It barely lasted a day and the phone was warmer than usual. I uninstalled most of my apps, turned off background sync for all of them, but still no change. The issue was mostly addressed by later updates of iOS 16, when the battery life went back to original (still worse than previous iPhones however). So there was either some exploit or bug in earlier iOS 16 versions that caused excessive drain... My 2 cents, Apple knows the best.
Your post is also another good clue. What happens when lower power mode is turned on for 14 pro? It disables peak brightness of 2000 nits and always on functionality of the display. The display power consumption relative to battery capacity is the main issue with 14 pro lineup.
Low power mode disables your 120hz display and switches to 60hz to save battery. What’s the point of owning an iPhone Pro then?
I noticed a quick degradation of my battery within a week and found my battery power use went from about 8-10ish hours per charge to about 6 hours of total use before dead on my iPhone 13 Pro. The battery capacity was allegedly 94% which I find to be BS. With that being said I’m almost certain that Apple lies about the battery capacity percentage when the battery wears.
Based on a friend’s account, I agree the capacity report is likely highly inaccurate.

Too digestible, no info. Show me on the Joanna Stern how she got 500 cycles in a 38-47°C situation in Spain and Tunisia while getting her 1-2 hours exercising at an 8 in a day.
i am a long term iphone 13 pro users , used it for two years and updated regularly on time. My battery is at 86% after 2 years of brutal use.
I wonder if it's the wireless charging...I used that for most of the first year and the battery went down to 87/88. It was usually warm during charging vs plugged in. Did you charge yours using the magsafe?
I just replaced my iPhone X battery. It had diminished down to about 72% which sounds good but it was horrible. Phone basically had to stay plugged in. Went aftermarket (can’t remember the brand) and I did it myself in about 30 mins. I am used to repairing my own devices, and I never got the error message and I can still see my health. I can go all day now and then some on a charge vs me having to plug up every chance I get cause I knew the phone would die fast. Pretty good to know how to take care of batteries. My DJI batteries for my magic 2 pro mention charging up to 85% if going to be stored a long time. Lots of battery knowledge to learn. Good video.
I miss my iPhone X. Best phone I have had. AND it was the last model from Apple before they introduced the Battery Message of doom. if you go third party with the Xs, that message would come up.
I just bought a 14 pro max about a month ago and my battery health is declining really fast from 100 percent to 97 percent in the period of 3 weeks

Always take your iPhone to an authorized Apple provider or an Apple Store to get your battery replaced. The reason it takes them so much longer isn’t because they don’t start the repair right away, it’s because they spend 30min-1hour pealing off your old waterproof seal and applying a new one. Opening the device damages the seal and if not replaced you will lose your full water resistance.

I mean , in theory , yes but do you have any proof ? Coz for the amount they had to do, and the pay , and with todays society , there will always be short cuts , laziness Just like every companies , there will be workers who work hard most average / meet just the bare required and the basic minimum standard and some super lazy same as those independent. Some are good some will be bad And they are cheaper not coz they are bad Just coz they don’t have the brand power to charge higher just like third party phone cases , most are similar or same quality of Apple (some are way worse also ) But they are all cheaper coz they don’t have that logo
Does this mean android phones such as S23 or S23+ have stronger battery health? What's your take on this?
There is a third option. Maybe even a forth. You can keep your phone and try to charge it before you leave your house and only use it when you need to. The other option is bringing a battery pack with you and charging as you go. I have a 4 year old android phone. I feel like i have more than enough charge. But i still top it up before i leave the house. Just incase i get stuck somewhere waiting for something and i can just use my phone until i am done. I also try to plugin my phone if i think the power is going to go out.
13 mini user here and I just got it a couple weeks ago refurbished. The battery is genuine since I can see its capacity but it drains quick. 3% drop in 3 weeks

Are you not going to investigate at all about the fact that apple in their last 2 models is using cheaper 600 cycles batteries instead of 800 cycles like most of the expensive phones out there? This was a really poor article finding why batteries are draining at much higher speed than in the past! 🤦🏻♂️
Bingo. This is not really a good deep dive into 14 pro battery life issues. Actually it is 500 cycles for iphones. Their macbooks, ipads and watch has 1000 cycles rated batteries. It is clear they are using inferior battery in iphones. Maybe they want users to upgrade to newer iphones more often as batteries get weaker or they did the math and want for more regular $99 battery service from the large iphone user base.
I have the same phone, bought 13 months ago, mine is at 96%. I avoid wireless charging. I try to keep it between 20-80%

The true advantage of replacing a battery at an Apple Authorized Repair Shop is that if they break the phone or cannot complete the service, you get a new replacement device.

my iphone XR i had from March 2021 - September 2022's battery health stayed at 100% until may 2022, dropped to 99% then randomly after updating to ios 16 in the septemeber of the same year dropped to 95% out of nowhere my iphone 11 ive had from September 2023 - Present has gone down from 98% to 95% in just over a month although my iphone 7 i had from september 2022- april 2023 didnt drop from 100% at all. all have had basically exactly the same use cases.

The always on display shouldn't significantly impact the endurance of the battery. The presence of recycled materials also shouldn't have a large impact on that either.
always on display does affect battery life. Do the test yourself between disabled always on display vs on. Also 14 pro has 2000 nits peak brightness display, way higher than earlier iphones. People are ignoring the power consumption of the display for some reason. Ultimately the battery provided is weak capacity wise and hence you need to recharge your 14 pro way more.
@@silver-monkey yes heat and these other excuses like fast charging or charging to 100% is not the real main issue here. Apple really screwed up with weak battery capacity relative to display power consumption with 14 pro. Also why does Apple provide iphone with inferior battery vs ipad and macbook and watch? Iphones have 80% capacity rated at 500 cycles vs 1000 cycles for ipads, macbook and watch? Do they want people to upgrade their iphones more because of weaker battery?
Always on display does not use a lot of battery, the amount of battery use is low. That is certainly not the reason why the battery health went down fast. Most likely the reason is due to poor thermal cooling in the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple has never once included copper heatpipes or vapor chambers inside and their phones tend to get hot compared to other flagships with proper cooling. Also, wireless charging generates a ton of heat, and the fact that the iPhone 14 still uses the lightning connector which is very inefficient and generates a lot of heat during charging (just like micro USB)
@@americanfreedomandworldpea6912 iPhone 13 Pro has same similar cooling. Peolple charge 13 pro wirelessly as well. So why don’t iPhone 13 Pro batteries suffer the same fate in one year time?

Heat also becomes a bigger problem over time as the internal resistance of the battery also increases as it goes down in capacity so it generates a lot more heat when charging on a cable compared to when it was new.

Apple has put a software lock on non Apple batteries so you cant see cycles or battery health.
Luckily I have an iPhone 13 pro and didn't upgraded to iphone 14 series or iphone 15 series, so iphone 13 battery health at 94%~96% still okay and lasts for almost 3 years. the solutions is never overcharged after charged to 100% and don't overheat it while exposed to sunlight.
Nothing wrong with the 15’s & it’s too early to tell if they will have degradation issues or not.

My Mac is at 232 cycle and 86%. It gives me around 8 hrs. When it was new it was about 14-15 hrs. The prob now is that the battery % suddenly drops for now reason.

This is exactly why user replaceable batteries r so important to be implemented ASAP! It's a shame Apple being so much "GREEN" and talking about sustainability didn't do that yet! BIG THUMBS UP👍👍 to the EU resolution coming in 2027 for making user replaceable batteries mandatory!
This is a huge misconception. The battery is by far most toxic/hard to recycle part of the phone. Larger inbuilt battery is many times friendlier to the environment than a tiny replaceable one, like we the ones we used to have on old Android phones. EU has done goofed with that legislation, hopefully manufacturers find a way around the legislation, like adding screws/pulltabs.
@@jackwilson5542 there is one more thing - most phones won't get software updates past 2-3 yrs of the time of purchase. Sure, there are brands, which offer 5 or even up to 7 yrs of updates, but it ain't true for most brands. So, trying to extend the life of a phone, which is software non-updatable is questionable. On bootloader unlocked phones one can eventually install an alternative OS, but again it won't work for most phones - they are either vendor locked or even if unlocked - they are not supported on those alt.OSes. So, with all considerations we're back at where we started :) Are those changes practical?

I have an iPhone 14 Pro, and it is now 11 month since I acquired it. It still lists capacity as being 100%. I never fast-charge it with higher wattage. Instead I use either a 12-watt charger from an iPad, or I charge the phone with an older 5-watt charger from earlier iPhone's I've owned. Thus I'm not over heating the iPhone's battery.
My 12 Pro is at 88% of 3 years of usage, it's such a good phone, i couldn't imagine upgrading even if i wanted to but seeing all the issues with the 14's battery and the 15 pro's is quite worrying for the future of iphones.

Mines is at 77 percent battery health. I feel like if I gotten the max the battery would be better, I just hate the weight of it.
I have always wondered about repair movement when in Philippines it’s actually cheap and easy to replace battery and LCD or OLED of iPhones. It’s those people who dont use cases who will most likely enccounter a big problem if it’s Face ID that is broken. There are many shops even authorized apple service centers which cost alsmosy the same anyway to replace any part

Good information and that is why I stopped worrying about battery life. It is what it is, nothing lasts forever.
Samsung Galaxy Xcovers do, since you pop out the battery and replace it. It's also Drop proof.
The reasons outlined are wrong 14 pro (also 15 pro) has higher 2000 nits peak brightness display and always on display so it consumed way more battery and needed frequent recharging mid day, hence more battery cycles. Basically Apple had a small capacity battery relative to display power consumption and it is their design flaw with 14 and 15 pro series. You didnt have such a power hungry display before 14 pro.

This is kinda well known, the newer the phone the more hi tech the screens, software and more battery use. 2 years is the max these days on batteries, it’s by design.

There is a button on the side of the iphone that does the trick. You hold it down and then rub your finger across the top of the screen. Never touch the iphone ever again. Get an Android phone, and never worry about battery health ever again.
I work on iPhones for leaving. My XS Max is 94% and 14 Pro Max at 100% just over 1 year old. I install new Tech battery no more error massage for batteries. Nice video Thanks :)
Super high pressure 80 to 100 and very deep discharge at 0 to 20. Both cause damage in different ways. Set charge limit to 80% and don’t go below 20.

The problem is, basically everyone's iPhone 14 batteries are degrading faster, and I don't think everyone is subjecting their phones to more heat then they did with iPhones 13. So, Apple is making iPhone batteries fail faster, and we need to get Apple responsible for this.
Because one Apple provides iphones with 500 cycle battery life vs macbook, ipad and watch with 1000 cycle rated life. Most people are not aware of this that iphones have inferior battery relative to their other products. Reason number two is their 14 pro display has way more peak brightness at 2000 nits with always on functionality. This eats up battery power quickly and you need to recharge your 14 pro twice daily, so on average people spend 1.5 to 2 battery cycles each day. Hence your batteries are failing quickly because they are weak in first place relative to power consumption.
@@silver-monkey You are being very naive. Samsung has a much worse record when it comes to battery health over time than Apple. Aside from that Note 7 explosion fiasco a few years back, Samsung phones in general are known to have batteries that inflate significantly over a normal use cycle of 5 years. I've had an iPhone X since launch, and it's still working fine 6 years later with over 85% battery health. Realistically, if you pay any remote attention to your battery charging habits (i.e., when, at what percentage, and how long you charge) and optimize that so you don't charge the phone over 80% regularly or let it fall under 20%, the battery the phone came with will last for at least 5 years without dipping below 80% battery heath.

The first point is, okay iPhone 14 Pro (Max) has always-on and brighter screens, but that alone isn’t going to use that much more battery to have the battery degrading that much faster. That’s what’s everyone trying to speculate or defend this second battery gate. The second point is, iPhone 14 batteries are degrading faster per cycle basis than before. This video is the first time that I have seen someone posting their battery cycle count along with health percentage. And to my expectation, iPhone 14 batteries are degrading faster per cycle. Even though Stern try to speculate heat was the reason behind this, I don’t think so. I don’t think everyone is subjecting their iPhones 14 to that much more heat to cause them to degrade like 30% faster. So the reason is Apple is pinching money out of us by using bad batteries on iPhones 14. Finally, the battery cycle specification. Ok, iPhone batteries are specced for 500 to 80% health, and we are used to iPhones batteries that far exceeding what they claim they can do. For example, Stern’s iPhone 12 Pro is projected to hit 80% at about 1100 cycles (my calculations). But the 14 Pro will hit 80% at about 750 cycles. Apple can make very durable batteries in older iPhones and Mac / iPad / Apple Watches, why can’t they keep using these good batteries? P.S. I am not aware of anyone comparing battery durabilities across different device types. It’s kind of meaningless because we use laptops and phones rather differently. Look, I have brought a lot of Apple products over the years, I had been very excited about them. My devices in Find My fill up the whole screen plus half a dozen more. I just can’t agree with what Apple is doing lately.

The problem is Apple uses different chemistries for different products, for a GOOD REASON, not to make people buy more iPhones. iPhones are the only apple product charging with up to 3C charging speeds, meanwhile MacBooks max out at 1,3-1,4C and iPads even below 1C. I know a few iPhone 13 and 14 users, and most of them have a good battery health regarding to the cycle count. The ones with bad battery health are the ones going often to 0 or 100% charge, keeping it for hours plugged in at 100%, doing exclusively fast charging etc. I know only one power user whos low battery health is coming from endless gaming and charging all the time and this guy accumulate like >800 cycles per year which is just crazy. His last iPhone battery was replaced at over 2000 charging cycles because battery life was getting abysmal.
No one in the media calls out Apple for using “1,000 cycle” batteries in the iPad, Apple Watch, and Macs. Why do those devices get better batteries than the iPhone?

and you know what 13 pro did not have vs 14 pro? always on display and 2000 nits display. There is your reason why 14 pro battery life sucks and why you need to recharge more often which increase battery cycles.

Gotta wonder if apps which were causing the iPhone 15 to overheat like Instagram and Uber weren't causing this before iOS 17 - just to a lesser extent. I just gave my iPhone 14 Pro Max to my daughter, and if I recall correctly _its_ battery health was at something like 98% - and no, I don't use Instagram or Uber.
iOS 16 definitely had an issue with battery health on 14 pro models. It wasn't too bad that it was a massive problem but bad enough that a lot of us would notice. I thought it was my charger making it too hot but perhaps it was iOS mismanaging it. Got a new 14 pro after having my first one stolen, no issue at all on iOS 17
I have a theory that iOS is now fudging the battery health figure. When my 12 Pro Max was about 18 months old the health was at 84%. In the past if I could get it to 80% before 24 months Apple Australia would change the battery for free. It was at 84% health for another 12 months and the health only started to decrease a week before the 15 pro max was announced and is slowly decreasing. Currently 82%. That seems more than coincidental to force me to make a decision to either pay for a new battery or trade in for a new iPhone while the trade in price is not too bad.
That’s crazy because my iPhone 8c that I’ve had for like 6 years is just at 80% battery health. One year and 88% means my 8c is approximately off my head 77% more efficient for battery life
I have a 1st gen SE (2016) with 85% battery health.
My iPhone 14 Pro Max is down to 92% in about 5 months, crazy my original iPhone SE from like 2016 still has 91%.

Some things to mention: 1) 80% health is far from replacement category, it's the smallest significant wear level that you might feel. In other words this replacement was completely pointless. 2) Fast charging and fast draining puts more strain on battery. 3) Manufacturers often underspec batteries a bit to prevent wear complaints. 4) Phone can only estimate wear, it's far from accurate. 5) Legally, battery capacity can be as much as 10% smaller than advertised due to variations in manufacturing. 6) Batteries last very long time if they aren't abused (like charged in hot temperature room or frozen) and not replaced prematurely. It can take a decade or even 15 years to see actually notable wear. 7) Apple always puts tiny batteries and rely too much on software tuning, if they get it wrong, battery life sucks and it can allow SoC work at full blast when not needed and since battery capacity is only 3200 mAh and C rate is likely to be regular 1, then that means more wear and tear on battery. 8) Also it's Apple, the champions in very quick planned obsolescence, top tier scrimpers on hardware, number 1 removers of features. Just like with fraying lighting cables, they might have found out a way to screw customers by making battery crappier. People should really stop buying Apple junk if they really need quality, because they have more than proven to be the absolute worst in industry at that.
In case it hasn’t already been said, Apple also won’t replace your battery if it’s still above the 80% rating. Can’t say for sure in every case, but the internet consensus is you’re on your own if your battery is even at 82%….

Agreed, I got a battery replacement with no fuss at the Apple Store when the original dropped to 91%. 89 bucks and at least one more year of use. I keep my iPhones for 3 years.

Adding my 5 cents. Iphone 12 mini bought at launch (Nov 2020) today (Apr 2024) battery health at 87%. The phone was overheated several times while charging wirelessly in the car and wired on the motorcycle in full sun but other than that I try not to go below 20% and not to charge overnight - just plugging in while working in the office and unplugging at 80-90%. During weekends I tend to fully charge to 100%. It holds up well I would say. With this rate I would change the battery in 1-2 years and then the new battery would last longer vs the iOS updates coverage (Sep 2027).

Summary: apple manufactures and warrantees batteries to a significantly lower standard than that of competitors. -They also massively overcount cycles on their batteries.- Apple has its battery standards substantially lower than what is considered standard across the rest of the industry - with other manufacturers guaranteeing 80% capacity after 1000 full cycles, or more. In short: apple manufactures batteries which are designed to have a lower lifespan than those of competitors. There is a tradeoff between size and endurance and apple optimizes for size. (it's more complicated than that but you get the point.) Edit: what I said about apple overcounting cycles was incorrect.
I was surprised when I watched the video, I remembered it was 1000 cycles a decade ago. Also no idea about phones, but Dell only guarantees 300 cycles for laptops.

Oppo says 1600 cycles. Most phones have 800 cycles. 500 is more like in 2010.
you are 100% correct that Apple provides inferior battery in their iphones with 500 cycles capacity vs their macbooks/ipads which are rated for 80% capacity at 1000 cycles. I think they want people to upgrade iphones more often. Also 14 pro had 2000 nits display and always on display. That display is way more power hungry relative to battery capacity vs earlier iphones. Hence you also need to recharge your 14 pro way more and voila poor battery health due to way more battery cycles.

Looks like my info was dated - I used to have several MacBooks and there the battery would incorrectly increment its cycle count each time the battery was disconnected from the charger. My iPhone 14 pro sits at 86% after 1 year while my old iPhone 12 is at 88% after 3 years of use. From what I've read, Apple opted for a new provider of batteries at a much cheaper cost starting with the 14 series.

i've using 14 pro max for a year now and still have 100% battery health with over 300 charge cycle

Battery health percentage is such a big lies! My iPhone 11 Pro is at 95% but the cycles are 1436. How that even possible.
FYI I use my iPhone 14 Pro that I charge with a non-magsafe Qi charger every night since I've gotten it. It's still at 97% battery capacity. 191 cycle counts. Manufactured in 2022-07-04. My theory is - my battery is near max because I disabled "Always On Display" almost immediately on purchase.

so does it mean if you keep the phone connected to the power source (typically when working in the office), the phone is always 100% charged even when you are on the phone for calls/videos, etc, does that mean it will significantly slow down the charge cycle count?
How are you guys going to completely ignore the fact that Apple software locks/pairs batteries to each device and only authorized repairs can work? Those repair shops are still going to cause the software to give errors and lock out hardware functions even if they are using “genuine” Apple batteries because they don’t have Apple’s software pairing authorization. Very misleading. iPhone 15 Pro Max user here, just want to make it clear that you guys aren’t reporting the full extent of Apples greed here.
Apple doesn’t lock batteries, it just won’t show you the battery health indicator and say the battery is not genuine Apple in the settings.

Convenience is a huge cost factor. My local repair shop does it in 20 minutes without an appointment. Apple told me I needed to come back the next day and leave my phone until they called me 5 hours later. My time is valuable.

Accurately is the mAh of the battery is really matter. For example a phone with 3000 mAh capacity (new). When new it can be charged it from 0 to 3000 mAh. But after 1 year. It can only hold the charge for example till 2000 mAh. The battery is gradually dying. Thats why if u read the manual its says limited warranty. Some company gives just 6 months battery warranty. Meanwhile the 1 or 2 years warranty is only for the electronics parts of the device.

You guys really glazed over probably the most important reason why peoples batteries are dying so quickly. They charge their phones to 100% and it stays there for hours every night. Batteries don’t like to be at 100%. And lots of people charge their phones over night. That means their battery is sitting at 100% for hours which is terrible for the battery health. Apple’s new 80% charge limit is huge, although nothing revolutionary. Tesla has had this ability in their cars for more than a decade as maintaining good battery health is equally as important for them. This video could have used a much better explainer about this part which is where most people are impairing their battery’s health on a nightly basis.

Most phone OS doesn't allow this without some serious tinkering (think rooting or jailbreaking). It's likely intentional. What's worse with Apple phones is that it absolutely does not allow third party repairs. You'll see error messages on your iphone regardless if the battery came from another iphone. The phone serializes the parts and flashes an error when it isn't the part the phone is assigned with. Solution is allow user replaceable batteries. The EU is going to require this in the future.
Even before the 80 percentage limit apple already only charged your phone up to 80 over night and only charged the last 20 percent right before you woke up
@@marvinvogtde It isn't perfect though and it really needs to "learn" your pattern. Best is if it just stopped charging at 80% unless you manually enable it. But not all phones is capable.

Ive got my 14 plus for almost 1 year and it’s still 100%. I charge it before reaching 20% and unplug at 76%. Of course there are days that it gets below 20% and above 76%. I also don’t use wireless charge or car charging. Just the cable charger from the phone

Every phone battery will face the same issues, it's just that Apple shows you an approximate battery health instead of hiding it from you like other manufacturers There are some pro and cons for the users but it's better to know than the other way around
The main problem which we are not accepting is the software which is intentionally not optimised or made to affect the battery life for the older models. This is how Apple is forcing people to upgrade on new iPhones. I can prove it easily as I am currently using 14 Pro Max with 88% battery health on iOS 16.7.2 and it is still giving me 8-9 hrs SOT as day 1. When I had the iPhone 12 before, I was getting 6-7 hrs SOT with 93% battery health till iOS 15.7 or 16 came out and when I just updated to 15.7 thinking 16 might not be stable enough ? It actually made it worse decreasing my SOT to just 3 hours. Isn't that strange? Both 15.7 and 16 were made to affect its battery life on purpose. I thought maybe it needs some days to do the processing as how the other KZheadr says but it never improved and I ended up getting the 14 Pro Max. Also, I was using the 5W charger and never got an overheating warning. Thoughts?

This is why I charge my iPhone 12 with a 12 watt 2.4 ampere charger. It still can hold 88% charge after three years of use, not bad considering the age of the phone.
I'm blown away this needs to be explained in 2023. This has always been the case. Android just isn't as honest about your battery's health. It's all the same, its always been considered a consumable part of any mobile device.

Ev batteries typically have far better endurance than mobile batteries. Ev cells are often rated for more than 2000 cycles, each being a true cycle and not comparable to partial cycles as counted by apple. This is because they are built differently and also use a fundamentally different construction method - tubular cells are basically superior to pouch cells in all ways but are impractical to fit in a phone for obvious reasons. There are plenty of arguments to be made against the adoption of EVs, but the endurance of the battery packs is not one of them.

Possible reasons for the battery to discharge so quickly: you have one or more applications running in the background, a factory defect, the battery or the phone was previously unbleached and a problem battery was installed, the phone or battery was left too long to be used in - und deposit before the phone is bought. The iPhone is a very good phone.
here is another option to save the battery .. shut off the background app refresh and so on as that eats the battery and you can find some videos to do that and they do work to extend the life ... as i have a iphone 13 and i have had it when it came out and i am at 94% cap and it is my daily.
