How Apple’s iPhone and Apps Trap You in a Walled Garden | WSJ
It really is beautiful inside Apple's walls.
Apple’s hardware, software and services work so harmoniously that it’s often called a “walled garden.” The idea is central to recent antitrust scrutiny and the Epic vs. Apple case. Spot on. It was the original vision, well before the App Store.
All tech companies do this. That’s why I stopped buying Sony.
I used Sony as well back in the day. More of a penitentiary than a garden. But walled.
Sony failed with smart phones
Agreed. This is what... all companies wish they could do, build a 'moat' around the company. Apple just seems to have a 30-40 year brand that matters while HP doesn't.
But no one...I mean absolutely no one takes this to the extent that Apple does. It's beyond criminal imo..
They all want to do this. And that's exactly why we made antitrust laws. So they couldn't. Why does Apple get to break the law?
As someone has an iPhone, MacBook, iPad Pro, AirPod Pros and HomePods I am truly stuck. Also I use wireless Apple CarPlay, Apple Music and iCloud. I am legit stuck stuck but I am happy to be stuck everything just works so well. Edit: also I use apple car keys as well. It’s really good. Just tap your phone on the door Handle and the car unlocks. The car also knows it’s you so it moves the seats and steering wheel and mirrors to your position. It’s really convenient if you have car that is used by multiple people. Plus you don’t have to carry around car keys.
I’m another happy camper in the garden. 👍 I’ve got Apple everything, and it just works. Also the Apple One subscription made it much easier to just subscribe to everything I could in one monthly subscription.
Yeahhh i love apple but i agree atleast they have the best security
Time is the greatest asset we have, so anything that makes us more efficient with our time, even if it costs more is a tick in my book. After all, once the essentials are sorted, there’s nothing wrong in investing in something that is more enjoyable to use and enables us to spend more time doing what we love or with people we love. It all adds up. Some people define value for money as what specification you can get at x price point, I definite it as the value it brings to other parts of my life, by simplifying what I need to get done daily.

What’s more dystopian is Google building an entire operating system with the premise of harvesting user data to sell to advertisers. Unlike agreeing to the terms and conditions when you use an Android phone to agree to Googles data collection practices, nobody is forced to use an Apple product, if people feel a need to remain in the ecosystem if they feel their devices integrate more seamlessly, then that speaks more about the quality of the software. Google and Amazon scare me far more than Apple.

Yea if your budget limits your choices, and you care more about chasing this years new specification rather than the overall user experience and privacy, then Apple isn’t for you. Users don't understand how terrible the walled garden is
And when they do... Apple makes them accept it, or they push harder to break free. The problem is not even one or 100 people breaking free, is the fact that other that are still in the wall, will trying to *invite you* back in. It's a constant battle. My first move to Android everybody bagged for me to come back to the iPhone, but I couldn't stand the imessage and the notch... Also it didn't run any good games actually console or of games (emulators). Point being, When they realize they're stuck is usually too late
What’s The song called that plays in the start of the video?
It's nice how they made up a better term called "Walled garden" just for Apple instead of "Vendor lock in" which describes how it happens everywhere, including Microsoft At least Mac runs Darwin Linux, so it's kind of open source. It also uses RiskV architecture so part of the hardware is open source. And new OS and Hardware for every Apple product means they don't just lock out other companies, they keep a high cost for their own device compatibility users pay for. Open source hardware is also available, but it can't compete with the latest designs in hardware and software and UX that Apple spends a lot to make.
The thing about Apple's ecosystem and it's walled garden is that yes ur locked in but the garden is beautiful so many ppl don't leave

@@BrtoLopz nobody forces anyone to stay, just because people enjoy the excellent software integration between their devices, in a manner that other brands have failed to replicate, and would rather not switch just for a few hardware features here and there. It all started with windows lol the viruses on my laptops pushed me to the edge then I got a Mac..then another Mac..then iPad Pro..then AirPods..then iPhone..and now I know I am fully in the garden. There are people who just want stuff that works & whatever thing we happen on first that works we latch on to it. I honestly have resentment towards windows to the point where I can’t say it’s truly objective because my experience was so bad it made anything else decent look better. Android is perfect, no fault of its own just that it can’t take on an ecosystem by itself so I keep my galaxy note but I hate the short support windows.
iTunes was one of the first services that blocked things in. It worked better on mac, you can’t really transfer the videos your purchased since the different standard.
I've never gotten myself fully into Apple's ecosystem. Every single phone that I've had (except for my LG Rumor and Palm Centro) was a Samsung. And I've got a Samsung smartwatch and Galaxy Buds to go with my phone. I love that my phone gives me control over appliances such as the Samsung washer and dryer. I can also use it to control my color changing lightbulb and connect to the ring cameras. I do however have a MacBook and iPad and I use Samsung Dex to transfer files between my phone and Mac. While there are so many apps out there that can't be found in the App Store, there are also apps that you can only find in the app store and nowhere else. Having both an iPad and a Samsung phone gives me access to all kinds of apps and games. Also air play can screen mirror to a Samsung TV. I store data in Google Drive, and listen to KZhead music and can access those from my Mac and iPad.
But most of us don’t mind , counterpart OS like Android don’t respect developers and people end up pirating software and music but in Apple it’s totally controlled and that’s great thing people pay for Apps and Music digital media and get good services .

This walled garden also increases the cost of developing apps significantly and means that we end up paying a lot more for software than we should. So, after spending twice as much on development, Apple takes 30% of our profits. There's also the webkit problem, and it is a really big one: Safari (and IE11, although IE is finally dying) is the single greatest hinderance to web development.
