With the cross-gen era now mostly behind us, we're starting to see games like Alan Wake 2 and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora push boundaries on current-gen machines... so how do the most advanced PC handhelds hold up? Are they capable of delivering a decent experience on this new breed of demanding game? Rich examines the Lenovo Legion Go, OneXPlayer 2 and AyaNeo Kun and sees how they fare against each other - and the most cutting-edge games.

OneXPlayer 2 Pro Amazon Store here: www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPSMBPCT
NOTE: The OneXPlayer 2 Pro has 32GB of RAM, which seems to help a great deal with Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, which does not run as well on 16GB systems like the ASUS Rog Ally.

    • Nope - LenovoGO runs emulators, smaller games or older titles like a champ. Max Payne 3 looks incredible in 1600p, so does Ps2 emulation or 2D indies. Or Nvidia GeForce NOW games - in 1600p they look glorious. On the other hand 800p on Deck is the worst choice ever - even fonts in some games are not visible.

  • the detachable "joy-cons" are a huge plus in my opinion, there's nothing more frustrating than an expensive mobile device rendered unusable because a few cheap components like buttons or joysticks are worn out. yes i know, there are often replacement parts on the secondary market, but they are often of a lesser quality plus you have to take your device apart and probably void the warranty.

    @Youtube-Censorship-Police@Youtube-Censorship-Police10 күн бұрын
    • Most manufacturers only have a 1 year warranty and most joysticks will last longer than that amount of time so that doesn’t present as big of a worry as you stated. Opening a device to replace these parts can’t be done by everyone so I understand that completely!

    • I wish all handhelds can employ the joystick model though. It’s sweet to put the screen on a tablet holder and play games lying down with 2 controllers having your hands anywhere you want, with a pad you have to join your arms together. Is there a way to do that if you’re interested in a certain device? Are there custom controllers that are joycon like and you can connect them instead?

There are so many more affordable options out now. Even this one with the 8840u chip. Not worth the price when a Steamdeck and the Ally are cheaper and better with more support. But i love the variety these smaller companies offer.

  • I do love the Steam Deck OLED for certain games. Namely, the ones with decent HDR support. But my favorite handheld, the one I use the most, and which strikes the best balance of features, is the ROG Ally. The 120Hz VRR display is unmatched, and makes every game look and feel smooth and stable. I also like the additional TDP headroom over the Deck. Many games just don't can't run well on the Steam Deck, but pushing the Ally a little beyond 15W (18W is often enough) is enough to go from stutter mess to fully enjoyable. Finally, Game Pass is the biggest reason for me to prefer the Ally. It runs Windows, and the Deck does not (not at any acceptable level at least), so the Ally is the crown king of Windows handhelds, bar none ❤

  • Another Great video! What I would love to see is a deep dive on how vram settings work on these machines. Does auto really work because it doesn't seem like it or at best it seems very game dependent. How does that differ to what meteor lake is doing in something like the MSI claw and the intel 155h from an architectural level and how dynamic memory allocation is handled? Is intel more advance in this respect as in is it truly handled more like a true unified pool of memory (like on apple silicon) and where amd really isn't since we have to set vram amounts at the bios level? Is the auto setting on amd systems "fake" auto? What does it all really mean and how does it impact a variety of games?

  • Please make a video on what you think would make a perfect handheld, both in terms of the silicon and the features. Do we need 8 cores in a gaming handheld with a 1080p screen? Is having a higher refresh rate more important than VRR? What is the minimum battery life it should achieve? Answers to all these questions. OEMs (and AMD) might use such a video for inspiration to improve their products and it would benefit us all in the end.

I have the Ally Z1 Extreme and I've noticed the following: There is almost no performance gain above 27 watts in games When you disable CPU boost, the GPU clocks receive a clock frequency boost - but I have not really measured a tangible gain in FPS however 900p is the sweet spot for most AAA games, however - this should have been a native 720p 120hz panel, instead of a 1080p panel.

I liked the Ally for the 1080p, VRR and Z1E and the Deck for the battery life, console-like UI, better performance at 15W and sleep/resume functionality. I am eagerly awaiting Asus announcement on Ally 2. Hopefully they keep the 1080p VRR and make the screen at least an 8” with a bigger battery, add a touchpad, 32GB ram option and up the build quality (no burned SD cards and loose joysticks). BTW I really want to see what Valve and other manufacturers will be able to get from the Qualcomm's X-Elite chips which should be an excellent choice for these handhelds if they manage to translate x86 code efficiently similar to what Apple did with the Rosetta 2. Most likely the translation will dip the performance even further and they will be on par with these x86 SoCs, time will tell of course.

  • @Digital Foundry Hi Rich, please take into consideration for the Legion Go Review, to set the TPU on Performance or 30 Watt custom mode and the system to Efficiency, as that way you can get a 10 to 30 % performance boost in most games, as the GPU part of the APU is receiving more power that way, and the in comparison already stronger CPU a bit less. In most games, especially the GPU focussed ones you are getting a way higher performance (more FPS) then putting TPU AND system policy to performance. Keep in mind to set the BIOS to 6400 MHz for lower wattages (15 and below) as the Legion Go at those power levels then performs faster then on the standard 7500 MHz, because it simply doesn't have enough power to drive the full memory speed and therefore performs better. Also the VRAM size sweetspot delivering the best performance in most games is 6 GB, and in some the newer Auto setting can be faster, but also lead to some issues with some games. Considering those factors and using the latest graphics drivers, the chipset drivers from the AMD page and the newest BIOS update the Legion GO outperforms the ROG ALLY in most games. I also never had those issues you mentioned in this video at all... Would be great if you could consider those points and also mention them to others in your video, as they are gamechanging in performance. I know those as I got the Legion Go at release and was active part of the great official Lenovo Legion Go group (part of Lenovo's legion forum) from the beginning.

But I've noticed less stuttering in Miles Morales using direct USB Install with Windows 11 vs Cloud Recovery, plus AMD Drivers seems to work better and is always updated vs waiting a month for ASUS to update their own. I don’t see how 800p on a 7.4” isn’t sharp enough for desktop usage for some. It looks plenty fine for me when using either my Deck OLED or Ally. And I’m a stickler for high resolutions and great pixel density. I use a 4K 27” for the higher pixel density on my main rig and the 800p 7.4” of Deck is no problem.

I use 4K on one Gaming PC and 1440p on the other gaming PC. There is no way i'm going back to 1080p after all these years as it looks too pixelated. 1080p is fine for Blu-Ray on a TV, but not for desktop or gaming. 1440p is the sweet spot on PC in majority of games. I mostly use 4K only for RTS Games as higher resolution matters a lot in RTS.

    @GordonGordon@GordonGordon16 күн бұрын
    • Yes, that's a good way of looking at it - but no substitute for 1080p VRR on these machines. One good thing on Legion Go though is that you can set-up Windows for 120Hz or 144Hz, meaning clean dividers to 40fps or 36fps (25ms vs 27.8ms) - both far preferable to 30fps.

      @DigitalFoundry@DigitalFoundry15 күн бұрын
    • An issue with the Legion Go, last I looked into it, is that doing this cleanly in Windows is kind of inconsistent. On SteamOS it would be awesome to be able to run 800p games on the screen and get pixel perfect upscaling.

    • @@ZackSNetwork They are bandwidth limited, but they're not a rip-off. I can buy a Legion Go for £530, an eGPU enclosure for £155 a an RTX 4070 for £470. So, for £1155 I'd have a portable gaming PC, with the ability to dock and have like 90% of RTX 4070 performance. Given that RTX 4070 laptops are more like £1700 or so, and that an RTX 4070 desktop would cost at least £1200 too, the 10% performance loss for the form factor and functionality is far superior. So while you have an argument on limited bandwidth of the USB4 port, there is no CPU bottlenecking and they're not expensive. £155 for an eGPU isn't exactly much and Zen 1 isn't even bottlenecked by an RTX 4090.
