DF Retro Marathon: PlayStation 3 - The 1080p Dream - Every 'Full HD' Game Tested!

2024 ж. 20 Мам.
218 591 Рет қаралды

This compilation video compiles three DF Retro episodes into a single, 197 minute marathon. It's the biggest Digital Foundry video we've ever made.
In an era defined by sub-HD resolutions and 'challenging' performance, the concept of PlayStation 3 delivering on its promised 1080p dream seems almost ridiculous. And it's true that only a tiny proportion of the library rendered at full HD. And yet, in this DF Retro Special, 85 games are tested - and a majority of them target 60fps!

  • I was QA at Sega working on Full Auto 2. We weren't able to test 1080p because 1080p sets were so hard to come by at the time. We finally got one at the very end of the test cycle, but at that point in time all we could do was verify that it ran; we were only allowed to report critical errors.

    • I still enjoy playing 'butchered' PC ports on the PlayStation 1 and Sega Saturn that run at an 'unplayable' 15-18 FPS. I get the objective nature of reviewing tech and performance - and I'm really enjoying this video - but at the end of the day, if a game is fun, that is what matters. One example is Ridge Racer 7. It looks beautiful and is a true defining example of 1080p on the PS3.. but for me it cannot compete with Ridge Racer, Rage Racer, or RR Type 4 on the PS1. Or sticking with the same generation, it's not as fun as Sega Rally 07

    • Subjective reasons for lower scores. Umm ... right .... Umm, Ok .... I'm not sure we're reacting to the same video.

      @fd5927@fd5927Ай бұрын
    • @fd5927 there were 2 games during 2006 in this video which they both had 1080p and 60 but because they weren't triple A they don't get high scores so they recieved a lower score. The video continues that trend throughout. That is a subjective reason for a lower score where they meet the objective of the video but fail anyway?

      @OniMirage@OniMirageАй бұрын
    • @OniMirage My bad, I thought that the underlying ethos, and also the whole point of the video, was explaining that Sony promised and advertised the PS3 as being an HD 1080P gaming console, while in reality the GPU and subsequently shared ram was woefully sub-par, yet, there were at least "according" to John, at least "sixty", "60" games during the reign of the PS3 that matched that resolution or just matched it.

      @fd5927@fd5927Ай бұрын
    • @@OniMirage I think it's a case of games like WipEout HD and Ridge Racer 7 looking as good as they do, WHILE hitting 1080/60, that John has factored in here. Let's say they ported the original Pac-Man to PS3 and it ran at 1080/60. Like, yeah, technically it's performing as well as WipEout, but would you score it the same?

My first ps3 game was Resistance Fall of Man and it was the first game that my dad who wasnt even a gamer, played from start to finish and even did a new game + run. For the last couple decades it's visual effects that's been pushed, and always beyond the actual capabilities of the hardware at the cost of resolution and performance. Sadly, the developers are not necessarily in the wrong here - most people will not notice or care about 60 vs 30 FPS or even lower, and even less about resolution. Heck, even DF here is pointing out the lack of advanced rendering techniques and plain look for games that DO hit 1080/60 - even if the game looks perfectly clean without them.

      @casualcadaver@casualcadaverАй бұрын
    • @@casualcadaver $600 was insane. Also WiFi wasnt that great, only competitive gaming you wanted wired connection. Xbox had a "built in HDD" but it was detachable.

    • The 20GB HDD was only part of the more expensive 360 ($599 PS3 had a 60GB HDD). By the time you added in the HD-DVD drive ($199) and the WiFi adapter (PS3 had both wired and wireless built in), not to mention no HDMI… The 360 was a good console, but it ended up being more expensive if you wanted all the tech the PS3 offered.

    • Let’s also keep in mind Sony also had the CECHB variant without Wi-Fi connectivity and only a 20GB HDD (still had Ethernet) for I believe $100 less but was still in every way the same as the A variant otherwise. Also, as I understand it the insane cost of the launch models was mainly due to the console having full-on PS2 hardware on the same motherboard for near complete backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 discs.
