The Value KING - ROG Zephyrus G14 (2023) Review

2024 ж. 10 Мам.

The ROG Zephyrus G14 might not have all new chassis upgrades for 2023 but with the Ryzen 9 7940HS and RTX 4060 it gets exactly what's needed for the best performance with a surprisingly affordable price when you can find it on sale. Remember, this is a 14" portable gaming laptop so the G14's battery life is super important too.

  • It's pretty incredible that the laptop models with AMD CPUs have almost twice the battery life, while performing very similarly, as the Intel counterparts. To me that's a huge win!

    @damienlobb85@damienlobb859 ай бұрын
    • Really? I mean if that's the case, that's a huge win for AMD. One guy on reddit comprised a list of AMD laptops. I've been thinking about getting one but it's hard to get as many companies don't have it and Asus is of a doubtful quality.

Last year's g14 started at 1700 USD in India but would drop down to 1500 occasionally. This year it launched at a whopping $ 2300 for rtx 4060 model and $1800 for rtx 4050 variant. The 60% charge battery limit feature has presevered my battery so much that if I let it charge at max 100% it still last close to 7-8 hours with youtube running in background. I'm definitely gonna upgrade soon when the 2024 version releases next year. This laptop is a beast! (Also, the AniMe matrix never gets old. • The thing about the 4090 Laptop GPU is that it's so efficient, that even running on sub-175W it still outperform the previous gen top tier GPU with the same TGP. Sure it's easy to compare & bash on a laptop vs desktop GPU counterpart, but in the realm of thin-small-and-light gaming, the jump in performance is extreme. Hell, even the 4070 laptop GPU which arguably one of the most disappointing laptop GPU this year (40W on XPS 15, 60W on X13, 65W on Z13 Acronym) outperform each laptop's previous gen which topped at 3050 Ti by a long shot.

    • Hey Ben! Yeah, 2022 laptops seem to be much better value than this year. But maybe that's a recency issue and by the time 2024 laptops roll around, 2023 will become much better value. One of the things I'm looking at is 2022 Lenovo Legion 7 Gen 7 vs 2023 Legion Gen 8, which while on pure numbers is an upgrade the price isn't joking around. I wonder if we'll ever get to see Gen 8's prices drop to Gen 7's levels once Gen 9 rolls out.

That the amazing new X3D laptop chip from AMD is only available in their 17" Strix laptop! Surely the M16 also could of used a new SKU with this CPU, as it's firmly marketed/ aimed at gamers. ASUS doesn't update the BIOS or fix any issues even though this issue has been brought up over and over again on reddit and many forums - yes they did contact support. Many many users complaining about broken sleep, crashes and system instability. The fingerprint scanner driver had a memory leak and was occupying 12GB of memory before I had to disable it. Never going to buy asus, and frankly, I am a little disheartened with reviewers in general. I understand reviewers cannot use a device long term to pick up on these issues, and I get it, but I am a little sad thatyou don't mention past reviews of these devices. Very critical issues. Nice video and review, heck, it's the reason I bought this in the first place. But now, all I have are regrets, lost data and time. The hardware is nice, but what's the point if I lose all my work. PSA: Do not buy asus. They stamp out laptops and barely update their firmware, bios and drivers.

  • I had the 2022 G14 and I hated it. CONSTANT crashing, whether that be because of hardware or software (leaning towards hardware because it crashed on both Linux and Windows), and just generally regretting it because of the performance, especially in Blender (which I use super often). That and there's STILL no dedicated print screen key, or at LEAST a function key combination that lets me use print screen. Like, really? REALLY? A lot of people use that key ALL THE TIME. Why omit something like that? Couple that with Armoury Crate deciding it didn't wanna work at times, and you've got a recipe for disaster. I had print screen mapped (using an external keyboard to actually press the key) to the button that normally opened Armoury Crate. Worked about 3/4ths of the time. I'd consider the G14 again if they added a second slot for RAM (which I know is difficult on a 14" machine, thought IIRC Razer did it so it can't be that hard!) and a print screen key (or at least replaced, say, the multiple dedicated keys they have for software, which can easily be pulled up just by going to the start menu, and it really doesn't save much if any time, with a print screen function)

    • ASUS ended up buying back my 2022 G14 after 4 failed RMAs, starting with a failed motherboard replacement. 1st they didn't configure the motherboard so Windows and the RGB was freaking out all the time, and they damaged the bottom cover (which is plastic). They then reconfigured the motherboard, but the RGB was never fixed, and the speakers would distort past 80%, and they damaged the laptop even more. Then they replaced the speakers (misrouting the cable from one to the other, pinching it) which didn't fix the distortion, but they at least replaced the bottom panel after trying to charge me for damage they caused ($136 just to replace it). Finally, for the fourth RMA, they replaced it with a "refurb" unit. A refurb which was dirty, scratched, had stripped screws, a trackpad that didn't work, and a SWOLLEN BATTERY. To add insult to injury, it came with the wrong charger that wouldn't charge the laptop, but I wouldn't want to charge a laptop with a swollen battery anyways. Once that happened, they said they would replace it with a new unit, only to say they didn't have any and would refund me the money. It took them 6 weeks after they received the laptop to send the money through Zelle. I'm not buying another ASUS product for a few years. Not after that experience. I got a 14" MacBook Pro but didn't like MacOS and ended up exchanging it for a 2022 Dell XPS 15 that's on clearance at Best Buy for $1,500 (i7/3050Ti). Haven't looked back since.
