In today's video we ask the question, does $6,000 really get you THAT much better of a motorcycle. We are testing out the 2023 Ducati Desert X vs the 2023 CFMOTO Ibex 800 T. Will the Desert X beat out the Ibex? Of course, but does it beat it out enough to justify $6,000? Let's find out in today's video!

  • Firstly, great review of the bikes. Secondly CF Moto have released another version called the explorer. It has traction control and totally user customisable modes where everything can be turned off. It has a larger TFT screen and even has rear blind spot radar. Comes in at a 1000 bucks more expensive but now I don't think there is another bike on the market which can compete for value for money. Ride safe 👍

  • Just picked up the IBEX 800 T on 7/12/23. It's great bike! I've already done about 450 miles on it. I traded up from a KTM 390 Adventure that I did about 3500 miles on in 9 months. Both great machines, but I needed something bigger for the long distance freeway stints to get to the mountains.

  • I guess you'll know that for an extra $1300 in your currency over the model in your test you get the traction control and 6 modes with two that turn off ABS (if you acknowledge the waiver!). Fixes a lot of your cons. For that extra cost you also get radar collision/blind spot detection, 8 inch multi media interface and upgrade to Michelin rubber. That top model with full hard luggage and every factory protection option (covers for all lights, reservoirs, radiator etc plus kickstand extender and rally pegs) is $18500 in Australia, so $12000 of your money. Ho Lee Cow!

    • Time will tell if there are any real savings. Resale value and reliability will be key to overall ownership costs.

      @SWTrailsAndWheels@SWTrailsAndWheels9 ай бұрын
    • @@SWTrailsAndWheels Resale comparison is only meaningful for vehicles in the same price bracket. Jay mentioned Triumph Tiger. That's $26k new in Australia. A 3 year old one is $16k (38% less, which is typical). The $15k CF Moto would have to be worth $5k in 3 years (66% less) for the same $10k "loss" on purchase price. Maybe that could happen if they are utter crap, but you can't lose more on it than on a more popular (and far more expensive) brand because of the low purchase price. Low purchase price is insurance against losing badly at sale time.

    • I got a 2019 650Nk for AU$6000 incl on road costs and 1 year rego. I can sell that bike for $4,500-$5,500 today. Trade in is $3,000 (spoke to dealer today). Seems fine for a 4 year old bike to loose less than 50% of value (trade-in) in 4 years. Part of a group and a guy has similar bike to mine and have done almost 80,000km with no major issues. Only a chain, water pipe and one other minor thing. Only issue is the refinement is not quite there but it's something I get used to. Wen't to test ride the 2023 Explorer today and will be picking a new one up next week.

I imagine you'll get that free $999 extras kit with yours? Bloke at the shop said fitting is extra and didn't know a price but couldn't be more than a couple of hundred.

Both versions had plenty of power, brakes were decent, I did like the suspension and the bike was comfortable and overall I liked both bikes. What I didn't like were only two rider modes, Rain and Sport. In Sport the throttle was very snatchy. At low speeds the throttle was either on or off, nothing in between when trying to ride through the parking lot and on slow street speeds. For any off road treks, you would need to turn off the TC which is not possible. If they add more ride modes with an offroad, sport, street and rain modes, I would definitely consider buying one. I currently ride a Tiger 800.

  • With all the respect in the world and understanding that you are someone new to motorcycles and without off-road experience, the basis for determining the U$6,000 should not be: the plastic buttons, the support leg, the seat, the sound of the exhaust and how much wind protects the windshield!! The biggest difference between these motorcycles and where the U$6000 is noticeable is on dirt roads, in how the suspension of the motorcycle behaves, how its weight affects them on different roads. There's the money! And regarding your concern about traction control, most will tell you that on off-road it is better to remove the traction control!! I say that the main difference is that the Ducatti desert is 40% off-road and 60% on-road, and the CFMOTO 800 Touring are 10% off-road. Hopefully, you will surely have a good trip on rural roads, but with caution. Finally, what really makes a motorcycle ride well on any terrain is the rider, not the motorcycle itself...

  • I think you have it wrong on trying to justify any motorcycle, that is always way down the list. Motorcycles are always want vs need. I didn't need a Kawasaki KH350 in 1983, couldn't justify any of the 30+ motorcycles I've had since then, but I wanted them all. I wanted a Desert Sled, but that seat is way too tall for me, went with a 2019 BMW F 850 GS with factory lowering kit instead. 1500 miles in the last 4 weeks and still can't justify it.

    • You dont buy a ducati because of specsheets, you buy it because you want a ducati. Also you are forgetting the actual competition for this bike is Tuareg 660, Teneree 700 and Vstrom650/800. You could add bikes like Tiger 900 and F850GS but they come at a very premium price compared to those 3 mentioned before. Africa twin is borderline comparable but i would compare it more with the big ADVs.

  • Really? Some road driving comparison with ADV bikes and a Desert X that leans heavily towards serious Enduro tracks? As an almost 50/50 offroad driver I can tell you Ducati is worth every single cent of it - if you can afford it. But you don't have to trust on my verdict; just check out the videos of some pro guys really generating some dust with it... Plus on the road it is for sure the top-choice among all ADV bikes. Greetings from Europe!

    • Eh, they're both 500+ lb tanks that couldn't shake an xt250 if the trail got technical. That extra suspension only helps the Ducati for pulling over to the shoulder when the service engine light comes on. Both bikes are a hard pass and both take a major hit on resale.
