The 2023 CFMOTO Ibex 800 T is High on Features, but Low on Refinement

Chinese manufacturer CFMOTO is well known for their ATV's, but is somewhat new to making motorcycles. The Ibex 800 T is their flagship adventure bike, using a KTM designed 790 engine, and packing cruise control, heated grips, heated seat, crash bars, adjustable windshield, quickshifter and more. But, despite packing in a lot of features for the money, I revealed some rideability issues during my test. #motorcycles #motorbike #cfmoto #adv #advrider #dualsport #bike #ride

    • No. First, it is a Chinese company even though so many parts are made in China for all the mfg's, I think it's worth trying not to buy Chinese when possible and the fueling would be really annoying since I've experienced that before. A lot of good options though. Cruise control being the biggest convenience option that other bikes in this class missed!:(

  • Have been owning this bike for almost a year (around 20.000 km currently), the review is pretty much on point, thanks for your work. A couple of things I'd like to add: 1) Fueling issue. You have to go to the dealership and force them to update fuel mapping, then the problem goes away. The update has been available for a year, so no idea why new bike doesn't have the latest mapping. 2) Crash Durability I've used this bike quite a lot offroad riding different terrains (rocks, sand, gravel). And I've dropped the bike may times on all of them. Sometimes it has fallen on the hard rocks in the mountains and rolled away. No damage to the bike whatsoever (except for cosmetics like paint and crash bars, obviously) 3) Realiability Considering how I treated this bike, I would say the conditions were at the worse 99% percentile of how people would use machine like this. The only problem i had was that protective layer of the dashboard started to peel off after half a year- the entire screen was replaced under warranty. Nothing else has gone wrong. 4) Offroad It can be ridden offroad quite hard, although definitely there are better machines for that. But I have been riding with guys on Tenere, Africa twin, KTM 890, Tuareg for a year and haven't been in a single situation, when the bike didn't pull through. So this bike will limit you only if you progressed enough, train regularly and seek harder and harder challenges.

    • You still have the bike, comment still holding true? I sat on S today and it was phenomenal how it felt natural to me and so comfortable, HD Pan Am felt cheaper at $10k higher price tag, and Kawasaki was close to it but felt better build quality. There’s just something about 800, I’m thinking about pulling a trigger.

    • Nothing better like an honest comment from an actual owner. I thought the engine issue was just a mapping adjustment, BRM should have known that either.

  • I’ve owned the 800MT for over 12 months and I’ve got 22000km on it. I love it. No problems, nothing has broken or fallen off. The fueling was improved with an ECU update from CFMoto. There was a recall for 2022 models to replace the water pump impeller which has been carried out by the dealer. Like you said in your video ,it is an Adventure tourer and it does that very well. Best value for money out there.

I put Kenda Big Blocks on mine and rode it for about 700 miles one weekend on a camping trip with about 200 miles of forest roads. I'm loving it so far! I traded up from a KTM 390 Adventure.

  • I commented on the last video talking about this bike and I’m glad you posted the video. But I’ve had 22 motorcycles since 2018 and that’s persists over all brands and their newer models. I have to say that I’m blown away by my CFmoto 450ss. For the price it checks so many boxes. In the Facebook groups I’m in some people have over 25,000 miles on there’s and it’s been fine. I’m convinced that this brand is hitting the market hard and the Japanese need to be focused on CFmoto. My H2 which is kawasakis premium line doesn’t even come close to the features my 450 has. That’s a bike that’s 5,400$ beating my 20,000$ bike. Yeah the h2 is faster but that’s about all it has to offer. Personally I’m pumped that CFmoto is throwing a hand in the game because when there’s competition between brands the winner is the customer👍🏼

His helmet was on one side his left boot on the other, full of screaming pain. Blod coming out of his nose. We stayed close to him trying to give him as much confort as we could until the ambulance came. I´m 53 now ,and been on a bike for 34 years with small fails. But if you ask me today if i would buy a new bike, my answer is definitely a no no . They are beautiful (bikes),but what i saw today shocked me ...and changed my mind. You brave guys take care.

  • I sat on the Ibex T at a dealer last weekend. It looks appealing. I saw a you tube from Australia that said they have a computer fix for the herky jerky throttle. It appears top heavy with a full fuel tank. I think it would be good on the highway. I wouldn’t take it off road. I like the leg room on the Ibex for comfort. My concern is with our trade relationship with China, I worry about getting parts. Otherwise it seems like a deal to me. I have ridden an Electraglide for 23 years and a Goldwing for about that long before. So I like a bike that my wife and I can tour on. Great review as usual Ian. Thanks.😎

I mentioned it to the ride organizers for CF Moto and they tried to play it down. But I definitely noticed it. I have viewed several other videos saying the same thing about fueling. I hope they get it fixed. Additionally, I would want a taller windshield and wider too. I was very tempted, but just couldn't pull the trigger.

  • What’s cool about this bike is you can do updates using your phone. I thought I heard there was a fueling update available??? And there is an updated model out(maybe not in the us) that has traction control ect The things that make this bike stand out from the Japanese competition are it’s tubeless spoked wheels(which all adv bikes should have) and the nice looking headlight/fairing/front end, which the Suzuki and Honda are both lacking

    @IAmYourReflection@IAmYourReflection8 ай бұрын
  • I really want this bike but I’m waiting for Explorer edition which has traction control and blind spot detection. The throttle mapping is being revised with software updates and continues to improve. There as also an overheating bug that has now been resolved, again with a software update. Which I believe will be the main issue owners will experience. The hardware is known and should not be a concern but the software is a little unrefined but is improving which would give me confidence. The only other thing I would do is look over the bike very carefully just to make sure everything is tightened correctly and don’t be concerned if there is some coolant that leaks out (people have remarked that it had been over filled).

My last bike did the exact same thing in first gear (it was a 2003 Harley superglide sport with a big cam) so I'm used to that lol. I've heard there is a flash for the ibex that will fix that though. any thoughts on that? Also, I really don't like the idea of not being able to lock up the rear wheel, although I've never had a bike with abs before...

  • Hi Ian, I purchased the 2023 Ibex800T , my main consideration was cost, I couldnt buy a decent used Adv Touring bike at the price of this new bike. Used bike prices are out of control like everything else is. My CFMOTO dealer is very close and reputable, and there was no price gouging with my purchase. The throttle issues you mentioned have been mitigated in a couple of ways, for me there was resetting the Throttle mapping (Turn the bike on with the throttle wide open, don't start it though, count to 60 , turn it off and start it normally), and also tightening the carb to airbox connectors (night and day differnce) and also received an OTA update through the CFMOTO Ride app that addressed an MTU error message (It updated cooling fan logic that was causing it)

  • To answer your question... would I purchase one? I would have to say no for the following reasons. I currently ride a dual sport (DRZ400s) and am looking to upgrade to something with more range. I like the fact that my DRZ doesn't have any traction control, or rider modes, and 90% of my riding is in the dirt here in interior Alaska. So my inclination for upgrade model is still leaning towards a T7. As then I could still handle the rougher trails, but have the additional range to get to more far reaching ones without buzzing my hands numb (like I do with my DRZ on longer pavement trips using aggressive D606 tires). And yes I understand my tires are part of that issue .. but man are they great on the trails.

Even though more expensive, I believe I would still choose the KTM over the IBEX 800T.

The only sketchy thing I saw was the exit onto the blind road. Great test, as usual, Ian.

  • I have this bike and I really like it. There IS a surging at certain rpms but that is something I have learned to get use to (hopefully can get a fix with an app update). I mainly use mine on road and Love Love Love it and all the features! My off roading consists of mainly dirt roads once in a blue moon. So for me the bike fits my needs perfectly. And what you get for the price point would be hard to get in any other bike. I only use 6th gear in the highway. More of a cruising gear for me. Thanks for the review.

  • I bought one in the spring to replace my 2014 second gen V-Strom 1000. Your review is accurate as always. My dealer is working with a third party on the mapping to help the surge you find at that 3000 rpm. You are correct it is pretty bad. Other than that the bike has been fantastic. almost 4000 kms and no issues. much more comfortable and composed compared to the V-Strom. The bikes are $14800 out the door in Cnd dollars.=$10874 usd $13800+ freight+PDI etc. However the Touring comes with all the luggage here which is very high quality. We have a 5 year warranty in Canada. So far pretty happy with my purchase.

  • If KTM/Husqvarna didn't exist with their big lead on traction control features and the low-slung tank design, I would seriously consider this over other Japanese or Euro offerings. I may still choose the Tuareg 660 over this but that would come solely from the Tuareg being (arguably) the best in class for small-midsize ADVs (ie, not 900s), which I was really looking for as a newer rider who was new to dirt. The Husky 901 sold me because of the software and tank design, making it a much less intimidating bike despite the fact that it has ridiculous power (the high-power was somewhat appealing as it would help keep me interested longer term and be more comfortable on long highway trips through the mountains). I guess KTM has the low tank idea patented because I don't know why more manufacturers aren't going that direction for these already tall, top heavy bikes.

  • Test rode this bike twice about a month ago, once in sport mode, once in Rain. Two things killed it for me. 1) at low speeds, low gears, the throttle response was very on/off, jerky, twitchy. 2) indicator switch had zero tactile feedback, I constantly had to check the dash to see if I had done what I wanted to. I could live with number 2, number 1 was a deal killer. If they could fix those two things it would be worth the money. If you could live with the inevitably bad resale value anyway. Hopefully they can fix the few issues and I can pick up a used one in a few years

In car and motorcycle tires we put like 2 or 3 bar, in a bicycle tires from 3 to 6 or even 8 bar on tubes. PSI is not a standard but when grown up with those numbers in your head when talking about tyre pressure I can imagine it might seem easier. BTW, your video is excellent and thorough.

Came across one of these in my local KTM dealer (KTM are the distributor here in the UK) I didn’t know anything about cf Moto but recognised the motor. I was shocked at what great value for money this bike is. cf Moto are including the aluminium luggage in with the price as a promotion. I’ve owned this bike for 1 week now and so far I’m super impressed. I agree with all of your comments. Hopefully the low speed fuelling issue will be dealt with by software updates at some point. I’m also looking to replace the screen probably with a puig screen with adjustable wind deflector. I’ve also got an issue with the mirrors moving in the wind, the dealer has said they will replace at 1st (600 mile) service but I feel that I may need to look at alternatives such as double take mirrors. Really enjoyed your review of this bike 👍🏻

  • This bike is a big seller here in Greece (it's called cfmoto 800mt here). It has really low price and is full of tech. The spec sheet looks great but in reality the bike has a big issue. The fueling is terrible. I suppose the problem has to do with emmisions. You are basically forced to change the fuel mapping and lose warranty. After the change the bike is actually ok. Decent tourer, mediocre on road and pretty bad off road. It would be worth the price tag if it ever sorted out the fuelling. P.s. Could you do a review of the new voge dsx 525, a bike which after riding it, i consider it to be the best bargain of the motorcycle world right now?

    @user-ne6sg6tr9h@user-ne6sg6tr9h8 ай бұрын
    • The fuelling issue has been sorted with a free download from CFM (no tampering or lost warranty) and the remaining issue in this video is just constant throttle at 3k rpm or 20km/h in first gear. The vast majority of riders will never experience that.

  • I don't see myself going down the CFMOTO road for some time. There are things I like about their bikes... and things I don't; Ian always does a very nice job covering that stuff in his pieces. Price is appealing. But, I spend long hours in the saddle and sometimes wander long distances in random routes; so, dealer network and known reliability is a big deal and I typically keep to Honda and Yamaha for that type of riding. Ergos are very important to me, too. I hope CFMOTO continues to grow and improve and I'll keep an eye on them for now. (I noticed we didn't get the long shot ergo set up/leg position usually in these reviews... no camera stand, perhaps)

I have about 1700 miles on it so far. it does have some issues with the engine noise at idle it is a little loud for me also the fueling is twitchy at low speeds and my other grIpe is the engine heat from the engine On hot days it hits you on your knees and shins. I have had an issue with the MCU or ECU failure light coming on a couple of times but turns off when riding in hot conditions stop and go traffic this keeps you from scrolling back and forth through your TFT screen menu. I've heard this can be fixed with a software upgrade from CF Moto Also I heard it is caused by the radiator fan not functioning correctly. So far I like the ibex 800 s I haven't taken off road yet other than a short gravel road it's pretty smooth and I have the stock maxis street tires on it. So far I'm pretty happy with my purchase I'm looking forward to the aftermarket accessories and parts to come out. There are some Chinese aftermarket parts out there but not a lot other than CF Moto which are not cheap. No sure what the long term reliability will be? I've seen people on youtube with 5000 miles with no problems other than MCU failure and the surging at slow speeds. I think if you are on a Budget and your in the market for a middle weight adv motorcycle this is a good bike. Is it a BMW , triumph tiger or a Africa twin? No! I just moved up from a klr 650 definitely a step up especially the 95hp and the options you get. Hopefully I'll get many more smile miles from the CF Moto 800 ibex. Great video review on the Cf Moto ibex 800t there are pros and cons with this motorcycle. All I can say is go test ride one and see for yourself if you like it.
