Mark and Madi (short for Madison) talk about learning to fly and what it is like for a young woman in the aviation career field. We think Madi is quite refreshing!
If you have a great aviation story you'd like to tell, reach out to us. We'd love to have you on the show! Mark @ Skywagons.com or Don @ McBishop.com. Let's tell your story!

  • Mark, thank you for having the "withitness" and confidence to realize that Madisyn is something special, and thank you for the respectful interview you had with her. I appreciate your realness and willingness to have tough conversations. This interview and more importantly, the logistics behind it, speak volumes of who you are as a person! I hope that you become a mentor for Madisyn for many years to come. As Madisyn's father, I couldn't be more proud of her and all of her accomplishments. Nothing is given to you. Nobody owes you anything. If you want it to happen, make it happen. As a young Hispanic woman, she is a great example of finding a way to live out your dream for all people to see. Here's what she didn't tell you; she was promoted from a work-study student in the office of the AD copying and filing paperwork (really well!) at the University of Nebraska (The Cornhuskers) to the Director of On-Campus Recruiting for the football team without even applying for the opportunity. She led male D1 athletes, their families and supported/collaborated with coaches in a male dominated profession and she was a leader in all of it. She also graduated in 3.5 years. She is who you see. I love you, Madi-Cakes! Keep being a leader in all you do! Tim Garcia/Dad Semper Fi!

  • Awsome Mark! Love the unscripted format. Honest conversation about aviation will never get old. Flying should be about passion. I believe aviation would be safer across the board if everyone involved were more passionate about it. You definitely bring that aspect to the table. Always look forward to new episodes of Skywagon University and the new podcast. Thanks and keep up the good work.

  • As an undergrad one of the grad students ahead of me had all sorts of ratings, ended up with a Citabra (with floats no less), did instruction on the side and eventually for new Cirrus owners. Got her MS in Physics along the way. To book end my experience with her; I met a gal at a senior center years ago that used to ferry aircraft for the Army Air Force in WWII. She told me one time her boss told her she had to fly this B-26 - by herself - to some airfield. When asked why, he told her that if they saw him come out of the airplane too they would never believe that she flew it. What a pistol!

  • Thanks, Mark & Madi! Madi, you are spot on about the weather. Here in the southwest it is easy to take nice flying days for granted. I once looked at the flight weather, which had an AIRMET locally, then went outside to see the calm sunniness. I learned a lot about flying that day.

    • @@skywagonuniversity5023 Yep, it keeps me going...Funny thing is, the day after I was minted a pilot, my CFI at the time took my out for an "intro to tailwheel" and ever since then I looked at my plane with disdain, looking for a taildragger. But you know, it fits my mission, it's easy and 'cheap' to fly, and keep. So she's still the one!

  • Back in late 2022, while I was on vacation in Kalispell, I wanted me and my wife to both get a lesson from red eagle aviation. Unfortunately since it was only gonna be one lesson each, I felt it was just gonna end up being a waste of their time. I was mainly just wanting to get a lesson from a different area than my usual lesson areas.

  • Mark from some of your comments, I am detecting that you believe the aviation industry as a whole is chauvinist. I am a 15,000 hour commercial pilot and have worked in the hiring department of major airlines. I can assure you that the opposite is the case. Affirmative action government policies have completely turned the tables to the point that they will consider a minority with way fewer qualifications over the stereotypical white male pilot. It would be great if this truth is reflected in your pod podcast.
