The biggest issue I see with the like/dislike system is that it relies on the emotion system, which I find broken at a core level. It gives tense/happy moodlets that can be easily overriden. We'll see how it works with autonomy. A lot of things are said to affect autonomy, but I honestly see no difference whatsoever. Every Sim feels the same. One great thing about the architectural design profession in The Sims 3 is that it was integrated with Story Progression. So when a family had a child, they'd ask your Sim to come and make a nursery for their child; when a Sim got a new job or promotion, they'd ask your Sim to build them an office, art studio, home gym, etc. PS: I agree it's a builder's pack. As always with TS4, the most impressive aspect is Build and Buy Mode. There's very little gameplay in this pack.
100% agree. Over-reliance on emotions is I think one of the game's biggest problems. It was flawed from the start and needs some kind of overhaul. Even using some of Roburky's ideas would help.
so true! even the simgurus showing it off had to cheat other moodlets to go away because the negative ones were easily overtaken by the positive ones 😏
Yeah... in the livestream her sim was dancing to a music she didn't like while having playful moodlet, it overtakes her tense moodlet.
Hmm... but not entirely on the moodlets? It also affects the fun need and autonomy, and adds interactions that can affect relationships (when she complained about kid's music to the kid that loved kid's music, they got negative relationship). But yeah, as funny as the angry dance was, that was a missed autonomy opportunity - she shouldn't autonomously dance to music she doesn't like.
@@peppermintbutler8205 The angry dance was kind of hilarious tho 🤣
I immediately thought "all of Carl's Sims will dislike fitness"
I never watch the livestreams they are way too long and annoying. I appreciate you condensing them and showing what you see. Im so thankful for all of your videos and your website. I still frequent it when I have questions about the sims 3 and the sims 4 :)
Always happy to help. I don't really enjoy streams either. Some are better than others but I don't like others' camera controls as it can make me sick. But when I do these I know many people will benefit from my efforts and editing so I find myself excited to get into it.
@@CarlsSimGuides You're THE go-to man for an honest, realistic review. :-))
I never pay attention to the updated
Same here, and when I need a "real review" not a "bought" one 😒😓
@@CarlsSimGuides wouldn't it be neat to be a sim in oculus quest VR.....if only
"I'm imagining a picture of the floor might work just as well. It's something I'm definitely going to test." Yes Carl! Coming in with the answers to important questions.
Before: floor After: A pile of poo.
I'm not kidding this is totally happening in my review lol
@@CarlsSimGuides ~imagining Carl scaling up a giant dog poop in someone's living room~ I'm not surprised. A pile of poop is seriously better than most base game houses. Yeah, I said it.
@@gigisneckofthewoods Talking shit about Johnny Zest's house right here.
@@CarlsSimGuides if they have likes associated with gardening or pets, or heck the color brown, maybe you'll get bonus points for it
Seems like a legit pack and a step in the right direction after 6 long years but I wish they’d work on the core issues of the game which is the lack of gameplay, traits (more than what was given in the update) and the emotional system.
Looks somewhat interesting as an update
This actually sounds like a pack I will thoroughly enjoy.
I’ll think about buying after Carl does a run-though so I can look at it closer. If it has decent gameplay, Carl will be the first to let us know…as always 😉
Well thank ya. I'm going to have to think a bit more on this one because it's not standard. I just hope you don't need to do 5 jobs to go up a rank in this case, because it could get a little repetitive. I would not feel that way so much if budget were restricted. You don't notice repetition so much if you're thinking of overcoming a challenge and I'm afraid that's something that may not have been considered here.
@@CarlsSimGuides It feels like any form of challenge is stigmatized and avoided by the Sims 4 team. Which is quite a shame, but par for the course. cough mountainclimbswithfoodandtentsandeverythingyoueverneedstrewnabout cough. Oh no, what a dreadful cough.
I always wait until it's on sale or look at free update first
The pack has no gameplay. It's all in build mode.
i really appreciate how you always have subtitles on your videos!! even though it takes more time and effort you still do it. thank you so much!
Nah, it's easy. but the deaf and international community gave me so much support i made 100% sure they are always done and ready before I push the button. I think other creators - especially those who use scripts - are just criminally lazy. I have the script all I have to do is send it to YT for timings and approve it. But I'm grateful people notice the effort
@@CarlsSimGuides i'm really grateful! it's always noticeable because it rarely happens. can't describe the disappointment when you click the captions button, only to be met with the auto-generated ones lol. just another reason why you're one of my favourite creators on the site ♡
@@CarlsSimGuides I’m always grateful for those too. It’s been especially noticeable in the last year, with masks and all, which creators are willing to put in the effort for things like that. I understand if vloggers who are more ‘off the cuff’ and don’t work from a script don’t want to write them all out, but some don’t even enable the auto captions and I’m sitting there watching them out and about with a mask on like, “What are they saying?” So creators like you who actually have proper captions are just fantastic and so appreciated! Thank you 😊
@@CarlsSimGuides Thank you! It means a lot.
@@CarlsSimGuides I'm not even deaf, but sometimes i can't be listening to full volume or don't have my earbuds with me, so captions make a huge difference, i appreciate it
OH GOD okay I’m so happy this is coming with other things aside from the career because I had no interest in that. I’m also happy that sims are getting more personality! Finally! How many years has it been...? Haha. Thanks for another amazing review Carl! You are the only creator in the community at this point who I trust for honesty and transparency
I'm trying friend, thank you for the support.
Imagine a tailor/ seamstress pack. People come to you for custom clothing. You take their measurements, they tell you what they want and don’t want and you get to construct the clothes from scratch (the colours, the length, the patterns, one sleeve or two sleeves or no sleeves etc etc)
Omg yes, that would take retail to a whole different level I second this!
Love this idea ! That also could’ve been added to the stylist career !
I wish they would create a collectors pack where you could find more stones, make jewelry, sell it in your stores, propose to Sims with it. 💎
I've never really thought about it, but that sounds awesome .. making jewelry with collectibles and being able to turn then into special gifts that can be worn as accessories would be so cute, especially if children could make bracelets and belts etc .. 😅 now I need that!
One of my favourite things right now is gutting the EA/Maxis builds and redecorating them to suit the personalities of the Sims who live there - so this pack looks right up my alley! I'm also looking forward to the likes/dislikes system. While not exactly the turn-ons/turn-offs system that I keep wishing for, it will hopefully help my Sims to feel a bit more distinct. (Plus, I kind of love the idea of forcing my piano-hating Sim children to practice for an hour every day.)
I hope the personalities match the townies in someway. I would hate to see Nancy Landgraab being into a Gothic interior or the goths favorite colour to be white or pink
This never even occurred to me. Going to gut some houses myself....
@@MathPatath I don't have time to rewatch the video right now, but I'm pretty sure he said you can change the likes/dislikes at any time. So it should be easy enough to adjust Nancy's (or whoever's) traits at the same time as I'm fixing her wildly out-of-character hot and cold weather outfits.
Me who spend 2 minutes in CAS and use the same set of furniture in every build: 👁👄👁
😂 This is a mood it's so hard to get my builds to look different
✋👊
What I find weird with this pack is... They made an interior decoration pack... but they didn't include new walls (except one). That's quite odd, as walls and flooring makes half of a decor.
It's interesting how the sims 3 ambitions was able to have this profession, along with a bunch of others with in-depth gameplay AND a new town AND new skills AND a new occult, whereas the sims 4 separates this stuff and even when there is a pack solely focusing on one of the careers/professions it still doesn't offer much more than the sims 3 ambitions. Also, I think this was mentioned in the comments but it doesn't seem like there there will much story progression relating to changing up the townies homes. It's just sad.
Ambitions it's so enormous that I don't even remember what it's the occult that you talking that come with this pack! And remembering that are new skillS (not only one!) both hidden and unhidden in one pack ends all the conversation.
"it's interesting how the sims 3 ambitions was able to have this profession, along with a bunch of others with in-depth gameplay AND a new town AND new skills AND a new occult" that's because every three steps your game lags in the sims 3, and it also takes 5mins to load any other neighborhood or saved game. personally i think the problem with sims 4 are all balancing and between pack synergy, i don't think the amount of things you can do is the issue.
@@shadybrain3424 I mean tbh the sims 4 lags anytime you do anything as well. Simulation lag is just as annoying, so I prefer the amount of things in the sims 3, lol. Not a dig on u tho
@@fudgecookii4396 what crazy world do you live in where you think the sims 4 has anywhere near as much lag as sims 3.
@@shadybrain3424 When I played Sims 3 back in the day when it came out I didn't have any major performance issues I can remember. I'm not saying it's not laggy, but I have no memories of issues myself. It was a great game in it's time. But Sims 2 will always be my favorite.
i love the likes and dislikes and that it's an update from how we had them in ts3, but it was depressing to see them have to cheat to remove other buffs during the livestream because the tense one was irrelevant and the sim was playful lmao :(
I have so fed up with my Sims autonomously doing push-ups even after I’ve taken away their athletic trait.
Not to mention when you want them to do a certain task, but they automatically go to the gym equipment
I hope that Geoffrey Landgraab thing is rare too, he walked away mid conversation to applaud her sink.
As a builder this actually makes me somewhat interested in picking up the game for a few hours with this pack. I wonder how much it will really add to long term playability though as pretty much all game add-on (regardless of type) don't add more then a few hours of game interest
I haven't been this legitimately excited in a long time. Fingers crossed that it's not super buggy 😬 BTW the before / after photo montage was super unexpected but I'm all here for it
My husband put $20 for this in our budget for this paycheck without me having to ask. He knows I don't like asking for stuff and rarely buy stuff just for me. He said I've been a "super lady", whatever that means, the last couple of weeks and deserve a treat. This is love, kids. Don't settle for less. ❤ I'm so excited for June 1st to hurry up and get here.
That is so incredibly sweet. I'm so happy that you two have each other 💛
dunno man thats gay
That is so sweet. I would like to get it (if it's as good as them make it seem), but my husband and I are running low on money because we're buying a house. I'll just have to wait a few months.
@@PinkMarshmallows if it makes you feel any better, I play the sims to fill in all the things I can't do irl, like buying my own house 😅
@@natashakorbut3918 That's what the Sims is all about! Pretending! If you don't build/buy that dream house, you're not playing the Sims right. xD
They missed ceiling styling.
I think that's unnecessary as players aren't able to see the ceiling almost always throughout the gameplay.
@@eljaghali It helps tremendously with screenshots and it was a feature in 2 of the previous games before it. I don't know why it'd be that hard to implement since they should have examples of how it works in previous games as well as the ability to do it themselves with the jungle adventure pack.
I still waiting for the counter/cabinets there are functional as storage, not as decorated items
Looks cool but I’m devastated this is gonna break all my CC from traits to custom furniture.
Oh god, the end times are upon us.
Modders might be able to do some cool new things with the likes/dislikes system, so we'll see. I've been wanting to download traits but I'll definitely wait a couple of weeks after the update to see what's out there.
@@leahbobeaa This is always a good point. Those base systems being there make modding a whole lot easier. I'm curious how wicked whims will handle it given a system like this exists. It may make it better and there's a PG version now.
Yeah I'm wondering how this is going to handle CC furniture. Is that just going to not count? Traits it may not matter since it seemed like they focused more on preferences and less on traits.
@@leahbobeaa Yeah I have a Baker trait I *really* like (it has custom moodlets and whims and actually uses baking) so hopefully CC traits will be ok
They must have really felt the loss from The Tenants! 😂
That's what I was thinking! When I first saw the trailer, I thought "Ok...so The Tenants: Sims Edition". I'm waiting for James Turner to do the side-by-side comparison, since he's been playing that on his channel instead of Sims 4 😂
so you think this pack was done in two months? lel
lmaooo
It does seem suspiciously much like The Tenants minus the effort, coherence and real estate system.
IKR? This is SOOOO The Tenants.
i always wait patiently for your coverage. bc they’re concise and straight to the point. no need to skip thru 👌🏾
I think this pack will be wonderful. I hope they play test it properly though - in the livestream, things didn't go perfectly.
As good as it may appear, I'm still burned by their inability to release anything that works without updates down the road that end up causing more bugs.... or the fact that they're still trying to add more without fixing bugs. God forbid you try and open a restaurant with all the packs and what not you've purchased from EA, because it still will not work. Yeah, it use to work, but shouldn't updates fix things and not leave more broken game play? I know the devs can only do so much as the top tier in the company makes demands, so that's why I don't blame them as much as the people in charge making the calls on what to focus on, resources, and time. Sorry, too many let downs on a game that was always trying to do better with each base release and then drop kicking it off the roof of the tallest building they can find. But sims or no sims, I still enjoy how you do your videos, how you communicate, and your personality 💜
Thanks for this. I totally agree, and the ONLY reason why I even keep up with Sims news is because of Carl. He's so fun to watch.
Every update gives me anxiety anymore. They fix one thing and break 3 more, and then it's this whole process of updating mods and finding new ones to fix what they broke with the patch. Games are supposed to be fun, not a chore. I miss the days when they had to release them on physical disks. The gaming industry had to make complete, integrated, fully-functional games they play-tested the hell out of before anyone paid for them.
I feel this so much. The previous games were absolutely not perfect, but none of them made me look at an upcoming patch with a sense of DREAD and/or the thought of "what's going to break THIS time?" The completely and utterly broken state of TS4 is what's stopped me from playing it, and I hate it. I have genuinely had a lot of fun with this game, but I no longer can get excited about future content or patches, because they inevitably come with more problems. My personal view on new releases have gone from sheer excitement over TS3 packs to "ugh" at 4's stuff. It's kind of sad.
@@lunacouer I never thought of it that way, that they tried harder to avoid mistakes when they had to send out a disc. That totally makes sense. Sigh
@@lunacouer They need to make "live services" either illegal or heavily regulated to ensure high quality. Gaming companies get away with substandard products because of "live services". You pay $70+ USD and get a game that's not even playable; that should be illegal but it isn't. It's also not illegal for them to deny refunds when a product isn't even finished; EA has been sued and lost evey time they deny refunds, precisely because of the fact that it's false advertisement. What these companies do is the equivalent of a car company selling a substandardly manufactured vehicle, but put out ads that show it performing like it should, then denying refunds because it turns out the vehicles don't even have the parts neccesary for it to operate properly and/or the parts are poorly made and break, causing accidents or inoperable vehicles. Just because it's a video game doesn't make any less ethical to purposely publish half-assed games, especially when they falsely advertise the products.
Why did they have to make the Sim tense when they do stuff they don’t like? Shouldn’t it be bored as well? And will they still be able to become tense if you have accomplished the aspiration from Sulani that prevents you from becoming tense ever again?
I Agree with you actually. Maybe they should have chose bored instead of tense or or at least get tense if after doing the activity several times in a short period of time
I think that should honestly be dependent on what category the dislike is. Like being tense about doing things, but being bored by the music/color/etc. ones. At least, that's what would make sense to me.
@@LonelyAssassin96 So I've played around with the new likes and dislikes. and here are my issues: 1) The random generate button is useless. It only provides one like, or dislike, per category and that's it. I'd love it if it would have been a little more powerful. 2) The emotions are too strongly connected to the l emotions. I had a sim in a bad mood fix a broken toilet once and immediately got the "x seems to dislike handiness". I was like no, the reason why s/he is in a bad mood is because she's hungry, needs sleep, and hasn't showered after dumpster diving all day (I played rags to riches).
@@missjessilla Yikes. Here's hoping some brave soul mods in a fix.
Still playing sims 3 and watching this 😂
as u should!!
I haven't played sims 4 in over a year 😂 but Ill never miss Carl's videos
Been playing Sims 2 with a bunch of 4t2 conversions and now we've got the pretty and the fun. 😂
This seems really cool but I’m just so burned by all the underwhelming packs I bought in the past. I gave up after university and I just cannot bring myself to spend another dollar on this game in its current state. Like, they’re slowly improving some things but I just don’t know if they can change enough of what it is at it’s core for me to care for it again. It’s tough.
huh, doesn’t look so bad. those counters look pretty neat. but i prefer the base game update, not really swayed enough to the actual pack edit: THIS IS A GAME PACK? WHY DOES IT HAVE SO MUCH CONTENT
I'm curious now that you're seeing how much content it comes with if it changed your mind about buying the pack at all?
I'm guessing it has so much (build) content because it is limited in gameplay, which is more difficult to implement. It is basically an extensive stuff pack
@@daniqueneefjes6543 I second this. Most of the features they showed off span from features they are adding to the base game. The likes and dislikes shape the career, the bunk bed update applies to base game too (but the four new styles are in the game pack), etc. So we would basically be paying for 2 kitchens, a living room and some storage and clutter (and let’s not forget the random bathtub 😂)
@@yazplatt Yeah exactly! The most important and interesting features are base game, which is great, but what does this "game pack" add? A separated stove and oven is NOT a gameplay item, even if it is a desired item by the community. Are there skills? Activities? Is it really just the career? Did they spend all of their resources on the sectional sofas? Maybe xD
@@yazplatt and the new career too, obviously
I'm glad it's giving the Sims themselves some updates :) but the career I'm uninterested in. I'd definitely use the objects though if I wanted :)
For people like you, this might be grab it in a sale then (if money's a factor). I mainly say so as thankfully they have the likes/dislikes and bunks upgrade coming in the free update, but it's only fair given how much many have invested. I still appreciate it from them though.
Ooh I'm not a builder, but this new pack is really enticing. The new items look really good (that chaise lounge 😍) and the new animations of the sims are great too. Sadly I'm really not interested in the new career so I think ultimately I'm not gonna fork out money for this pack... I'll just rely on CC creators and see how they play with the new meshes.
I am not interested in the career, myself, but I do like the content and I will be buying it next week.
Looking at the trailer...I was like "I'm gonna buy this pack!" After calming down... I stated "Let's wait for Carls. Because he did mention that TS4 trailers is misleading." Yes, sir...you trained me well!
I wonder if they did all this because they saw all the praise for Paralives’ building features
this time I thought more of Tennants raising in popularity :D but yeah I definitely see where you are coming from
I'm going to let the rest of the community take the emotional hit of finding out whether all this works in game or not! The stuff looks nice, and likes and dislikes seem like a positive move. A few quirks could be liveable with, but the big question for me is, will it make the sims feel different, and will the like system actually affect gameplay? Thank you for the video Carl, your thoughts are very much worth listening to.
This update is the best one in a while!! I’m so excited about this. The only things about the preferences settings that I wish they would have featured was food and maybe a zodiac sign setting (like sims 3) even though it doesn’t really change the sim in any way. It’s just a nice little addition.
"You can scare the crap out of a kid while they're in the tent and that's wonderful" Carl 2021
Strange how you can’t pick favorite toys for kids and favorite meal/snack or character for everyone Edit: Maybe kids could choose their favorite and cherished stuffed animals but eh
I know it's probably an unpopular option, but this is the one pack I am excited for! (late to the game I started playing sims 4 just before RoM came out, so i didn't get to be excited or disappointed about the previous packs) I mostly build and as a console player without story progression gameplay didn't really appeal, but a building centered gameplay kind of makes me excited
The pack looks really fun and with a Lot of items. Still mad that we get like less than half the amount of items for male Sims than we get for female Sims. Can it be the other way around like ONCE?
I barely pay attention in any amount to my male sims but that is probably because they don't have great customization at all so yeah adding some more content WOULD be not just nice but actually useful, maybe I'd like my male sims more then - who knows!
I can’t wait for none of the existing townies to have likes and dislikes or they all have them randomized
Favourite colour is white but hates modern home decor :P
MCCC always did it.
yeah that happened with the seasons expansion pack with the hot and cold weather outfits
Apparently they develop them which sounds like they won't have them which is disappointing. I want to know what kind of music you like Malcolm Landgraab!
@@merchantfan if they develop them later on that also probably means it will be glitchy af at first and they will just be random with no connection to the character
Still no doorbells after all these years? Am i crazy for wanting some kinda "Someone's at your door" notification? Is that too complicated for them to figure out?
Lol- it’s the little things man. I wanted other robes and more interactive decorations. But you are so right.
Last time I played the sims 4, was Tiny Living. I’m SO excited to play this new pack... I think I’ve discovered my play style 😅
This is the first time in years that I've actually been excited for something in The Sims 4 lol. The update and the pack look great. Here's hoping they keep up the good work.
I love you going over their reveals. You make it streamlined and more precise. Thank you!
Another great summary, thank you so much
My pleasure!
Oof, them going to the wrong area for the big reveal tho hahaha. Anyways I’m so excited about the base game updates! And I love building in the Sims so this pack is right up my alley, but I also don’t have a lot of extra money lol so I’m gonna wait for the reviews before deciding to commit. A lot of the good stuff seems to be coming in the base game anyway!
I honestly like this pack because it brings many beautiful pieces of furniture and having a career around home decor is something interesting and can push you to decorate each home better and better, having your neighborhood more beautiful. It's a good idea to start with.
Great job, Carl!! This is one of those packs I will get 'eventually'. I am so in love with tiny houses, that all of the things like walk in closets will be useless to me lol. But the like/dislike thing is a base game update I can get behind!
Hell yeah it is. Now they should expand upon it. Am I asking too much? :P
@@CarlsSimGuides ... WAY too much, I think. It feels like I should thank Paralives tho, but I can't figure out exactly why lol
This will be the ONLY DLC I will buy because it really shows that they listen to the players. This deserves to be bought to show them that this is the right way to go. Congrats to the Sims Team and to the players and influencers who pushed them into doing this!
Great summary Carl. It's the quintessential builders pack that's not a builders pack 😉
Its *not* for builders what do you mean!
Carl with the inside scoop as always ✨ - I want to be excited but we really won’t know the longevity of this pack and the updates until we’re playing it.

Thank you for a great, unexpected review that now has made me decide to try going back to the sims 4 again ^^ @Carl's Sim Guides. Didn't know about the update, glad I do now!
Thanks for the review Carl and the condense of the livestream. You are my go to KZheadr, because I always find your reviews to be honest and to the point. I am genuinely looking forward to this pack, I spend a lot of time building so to be able to combine it with livmode is an interesting feature.

Yes! I was waiting for the Carl update on updates!
I am so excited for this pack I love building and decorating so much so I know this pack will be right up my alley🥰 I’m still gonna wait for you to do a pack review just to be safe looool
You seem to be intrigued by Sims 4 moving forward....maybe...just maybe...We still need lots of lots
Thanks so much for this. I tried to sit through the stream and couldn’t. 😂
I'm going to love scaring kids in the tents haha, that is great
Love the breakdown! Thank you! :D
I am EXCITED for this pack and am inspired to be an Interior Decorator. 😁
I love it. Nice recap ! I watched an hour of the livestream. I love the like/dislike thing. It also makes conversations with sims more fun in general. I'm not a huge builder/decorator. In Sims 3 i only tried the decorator job once in all those many years. But i will give this a try and go for sure. It is almost like a game in the game. Looks cool and cute.
Awesome video and summarized info! -- Thanks, as always
I enjoy building and am planning on getting the pack even if the gameplay is lacking as that isn't really what I will be using the pack for but I hope the gameplay is not lacking so those who want more gameplay can enjoy it. Looking forward to your review when it comes out!
Thank you for another great video! I'm still sceptic about this pack, I enjoy building but I would like more gameplay as well, and I haven't even played sims 4 in about 7 months so I think I'm going to sit this one out too.
Great review as always thank you 💕
I’m actually really excited about this!!
I'm definitely buying this one. Keeping my hopes low but looks fun. I'm a builder who tries to play (loved game play in other games) this might make things fun.
Dangit, this will get me back to Sims4. I'm not *good* at it, but I loooooooove building and decorating.
Thank you! That live stream was just too long for me 😅
I was looking for this 5 minutes ago lol thanks!
Damn, give me some time. Just kidding, glad you dropped in.
I'm so excited for this pack. I loved the designer career in 3.
I'm genuinely excited for this update and this new pack!! I feel like it's made for a player like me: console player, loves the building slightly more than the playing with the Sims themselves. I am so tempted to buy this the day it's released!! 😊
Thank You, keep up the great work
wow, The Sims 4 seems pretty cool so far! Can't wait for when it's ready and finally released to the public 🥰
Actually excited about this one
I genuinely can't remember the last time that I was truly impressed with a pack. I won't even wait for GP reviews before purchasing.
Love your videos Carl!
I’m actually genuinely excited about this ! It seems well done for once. I’m still gonna wait for the reviews before buying though (especially after the vacuum kit bugs).
Great vid Carl thank you.
