It’s time for a US v Japan v Europe drag race! We’ve got a tuned Nissan Skyline R34 lining up against a tuned Ford Mustang and a standard BMW M3!
So how do they compare to each other? Well starting with Mat in the Mustang, it’s powered by a 5-litre V8 with a supercharger added to it, which as a result produces 735hp & 690Nm. It’s RWD only, and there’s no launch control to be found! 😬
Next up we have Yianni in the M3 Competition. It’s just stock, so that means it's powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six, which puts down 510hp and 650Nm. It’s RWD just like the Mustang, but it has one key advantage - it DOES have launch control!
And then finally we have the classic Skyline. It’s packing a 2.7-litre straight-six, which has been tuned to produce 750hp & 800Nm. And unlike the other two, it’s got AWD!
There’s one key difference here though… While the BMW & Ford are automatic, the GT-R is manual! Will that be the key difference? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

that M3 makes incredibly efficient use of it’s power with that 8spd transmission. It’s geared perfectly for that engine.

As a lifelong BMW owner the figures BMW give when it comes to power measurements aren't that far off from the wHP, there is a lot less drivetrain power loss due to many of the components like water pump, power steering pump etc being electric rather than mechanical, it's a rather simple but clever way of eliminating drivetrain power losses. Whereas with the Mustang even though it has a supercharger the entire rolling assembly is a belt driven mechanical setup, couple that to a torque converter slushmatic and there would be a considerable amount of power lost when measuring wHP instead of horsepower at the crank. It would also explain to non BMW drivers why the non-electric BMW have an energy regeneration system (BMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS) fitted as well that recuperates lost energy from braking.

Im an elderly speed head myself, and I love the fact that a 4 banger can smoke American muscle totally amazing. I have a 1998 Honda civic hatchback with a Frankenstein engine. 1.8 lower end and a 1.6 vtec head.

I love how these cars are put through their real world scenarios. Missed shifts due to old gear boxes, limited grip due to lack of traction control, limited boost due to god knows what. Sure a car might be amazing on paper, but these tests show you what happen in the real world. How the hell BMW won is a testament to technology over brute force.

Do you think at high performance temps that these plastics will last? Of course not! That is why Porsche’s all have plastic impeller blades from their water pumps, break off and are stuck in the engine! Also my GTR has ONLY 600 rwhp on a Mustang Dyno and can do high 10’s. The BMW is a 12 SECOND CAR in the real world.

@@cedb7115 they perform as long as its the correct mods for the type of use that you intend. I mean you can easily make a car handle better on roads and track with just polybushing the stock suspension so it's not under strain anymore and everything can move more freely without any geometry changes. However if you buy a mega expensive suspension package that requires set up for each use.. and expect it to handle good on track and the next day expect it to feel good at 170mph on UK motorway then you will need to adjust the suspension every time you do either. Engine performance wise the same applies. If you swap out two small turbos for a large one then you best expect the thing to be an off and on switch as lag turns into boost, therefore its utterly useless mod for someone doing lots of B-road or track. If you accidentally throw money at a suspension that doesn't suit your favourite B-road and then you go swapping to single turbo setup then you will 100% make the car useless on said road. I know what you mean man but I think the correct mods for the type of use will be better than stock every time.

It's mid-range speed is very strong. I think it launches in second gear to reduce wheel spin. Going around corners is where it is superior to the larger sedans and estates.
The new M3 and new RS6 both tested by carwow have done the 1/4 mile in 11.4 seconds

Even with a 200hp deficit, that M3 sweeps the Mustang. It really goes to show power is nothing without control. That Mustang was sliding all over. As for the R34, it had a manual so it was not really comparable.

I have a 760whp procharged Mustang GT and it would eat this mustang up. He was on drag radials which require a smoky burnout to actually get sticky for traction. We can't see if he did or didn't but judging by how much tire spin he had, one can only assume he was running on a cold radial.

As a BMW fanboy I honestly didn’t expect it to do as well as it did against such powerful opponents.
I'm a BMW fan too and I'm convinced that turbocharged M horsepower figures are the figures at the wheels haha. The latest gen cars are too heavy and too ugly tho (except the M5 CS - that's sexy and marvellous)
