Making dining table

We built a dining table from very large sugar pine slab. Sugar pine got its name from the sweet resin that Native Americans used as a sweetener. The wood has pleasant odour while it gets worked on, it reminds me of sweet candy.
The wood had been laying outside for a long time so it had several spots damaged from bugs and rot. We had to fabricate a special attachment for our Makita hand planer in order to remove those spots and to evenly plane this large piece of slab. We used sawmill rails as a flat surface, but flat concrete floor would have worked fine too.
As always Nanny is an excellent helper and loves to participate in every project.
Music: Wood by Dan Henig, Barely Small by Freedom Trail Studio, Moultrie's Madness by The 126ers, Daisy Dukes by Silent Partner.

  • What a great pleasure to see another vlog from you. The table is AMAZING!! I have several pieces of that wood that you used to make table legs. My beloved late husband brought them home to me after he visited friends in Alaska. I was told it is some sort of fungus that causes the large, bulbous lumps. Nanny was a treat as usual. She just has to follow you every where. Reminds me again of my husband. He had a cat named Duchess and she followed him all over. She would steal his tools, screws, nuts and bolts just to get attention. We never had children, so our animals become our kids. Thanks for sharing your life with us. You never fail to fascinate me. Blessed be. J in Oregon

  • Dear honeysada (Darius) I was blown away how you made this beautiful table work with Nanny's help of course. I have never seen such a large plank of pine and so thick. Do you remember how much it weighed in lbs. or kg.s My grandfather was a carpenter by trade from Sweden and he built our beautiful 3 story home in Madison wisconsin. Amazing home we cherished. His one mistake ,, was one bathroom with wife, 3 daughter and a son to compete with small real estate. Your workmanship is top level and the finished product -a work of art. Do you sell custom furniture or do you do this for your own creativity. I could not help but admire the chairs that went with the table with the gracious model Nanny for her choice in the trim. That cat is so cool and I just adore her. Thanks for one more video for all your fans to enjoy. Blessings to you. and all your beautiful animals. I am also partial to Corona. Thanks, for putting it out there for us to enjoy.

    • I, too had a Swedish carpenter turned contractor grandfather who built, among other buildings, a summer cottage in 1925. Built one porch style house, & as family expanded he built a larger house around/over the first, then tore down the inside & rebuilt it. He needed a table to acommodate 20 people, so he made it, as well. House is still in the family, & so is the table, which has 4 little pull out drawers filled with memorabilia dating back to the thirties & lots of fun to go thru when sitting at the table. I also marvel at the construction & quality of the all wood home. Loved this video, I imagined my grandfather working, though I never met him. Also had 2 unique Maine coon cats over the years. The one who lived to be 20 could have been as adventurous as Nanny if we lived on a ranch instead of in the suburbs. He literally supervised everyone's activities just like Nanny does.

    • @@carolgustafson1105 Dear Carol, I knew your heritage by your last name. I am Erickson. I have such fond memories of growing up in that house. Big dark cool basement for canning food from the garden and a beautiful attic made of all cedar wood. We would have Sunday smorgasbord on the big screened front porch unless it was to hot and humid with Grandma's home made Swedish orange rye bread, Tun brod (skinny rye crisp) hard boiled eggs, herring, sardines and Gjetost (orange cheese) and would follow supper with an hour of Lawrence Welk. Remember the Lennon sisters? I get such a happy feeling watching Darius's Vlogs and if I am down in the dumps they cheer me up and I can see the things in life that one should concentrate on. I love the way he lives in the present and his life is one that is often talked about by Eckart Tolle. Yesterday is history, today is a gift and tomorrow is a mystery. So very nice to meet you Carol.. I think that the people who like to linger on this web site are looking for a simple way of life and I think that is why we connected. Blessings to you and thank you for sharing with me. Take care, Marcia
