Netflix Good Times Animated Reboot Trailer Thoughts | Who Is This For?
Good Times is coming to Netflix in an animated format. The trailer released and received mixed emotions. In this video I share my feelings about the trailer.
About Netflix's Good Times:
An animated reboot of the Norman Lear series finds the latest generation of the Evans family, cab driver Reggie and his wife, the ever-aspirational Beverly, scratching and surviving in one of the last remaining housing projects in Chicago along with their teenage artist son, Junior, activist daughter Grey, and drug dealing infant son, Dalvin. It turns out the more things change the more they stay the same and keeping your head above water in a system with its knee on your neck is as challenging as ever. The only thing tougher than life is love, but in this family there’s more than enough to go around.
Norman Lear's Act III Productions, Steph Curry's Unanimous Media, Seth MacFarlane's Fuzzy Door, and Sony Pictures Television developed the project, with Ranada Shepard serving as executive producer and showrunner. Executive Producers include Lear, Brent Miller (Act III Productions), Curry, Erick Peyton, Jeron Smith (Unanimous Media), and MacFarlane, Erica Huggins (Fuzzy Door). Sony Pictures Television produces.
This is what the boondocks was fighting against shows like this
I wonder - Carl Jones was attached early to this iteration of Good Times.
TRUTH
@@MsMakebaand he left due to creative differences
Boondocks did a Mo'Nisha episode about this very thing.
Yes and why not go ahead and redo The Boondocks because that would be good actually
nah this is sooo disrespectful . They would never do this to the Brady Bunch.
Don't give them any ideas.
,” said somebody who, like most of America, obviously never saw *The Brady Bunch Variety Hour.*
You think so? I’m sure it’s on the list of reboots for “modern audiences”. Only a matter of time
@krazygreekguy maybe, but I guarantee it won't have a drug dealing baby. some things just don't need to be touched.
Hell naw they wouldn't do that to the Brady Bunch, it would be an uproar if they did that.
Esther Rolle & John Amos both fought against the horrible stereotypes that the studio wanted to inject in the show incase anyone isn’t familiar with backstory, which led to Amos eventually being fired & Rolle departing I believe a season later. I applaud the 2. Good times was a show about family and love. At the end of the day they it showcased them getting through tough times and overall the love of family and having each other. This vile reimagining is a slap in the face
I wonder. If they would have made this show if john amos was still alive
@@showme443he is alive and mid 80s
@@carlosreid51 I'll be darned, you're right. John Amos is still alive. Same age as my dad. He played in one of my favorite 80's movies: American Flyers.
@@JB-ti7blAnother great 80s movie he was in, Die Hard 2.
It was mainly due to the writers wanting to focus the show more on jj and him shuckin, jivin and ultimately cooning when the show is supposed to be centered around james and Florida. John Amos wanted jj(particularly jimmy walker)to be more than just DYNAMITE and wearing a chicken on his head. By the time season 5 came JJ was a little more mature acting since he was the main bread winner after Ester Rolle left at the end of season 4. Seasons 1-3 are the best ones, season 4 meh, and then 5-6 only had certain moments imo but im glad they at least got out the projects in the end.
This was sad. Netflix should be ashamed of themselves. They are playing right in our face.
This is an honest question: but what HONESTLY and LITERALLY bothers you about this? Which part specifically, if you dont mind sharing examples?
@@Shinja_Sleepwalkerthese images push and reinforce negative stereotypes of black Americans. We do NOT live like this. Also, the original show was about overcoming these negative stereotypes. The original show’s family did NOT engage in this type of behavior. They taught their children to avoid the trappings of this negativity in an underprivileged neighborhood like Cabrini-Green. Our lives are so much more than these types of exaggerated stories.
@@ginoblackofficialY’all shouldn’t interact with bot questions like this. The answers are obvious if an actual person watched the trailer
Hopefully you're paying attention because Seth McFarlane didnt...
@@hagang1197 Disagree. I'm a white father, and I find the Homer Simpson-type characters in every show and TV commercial, with their endless stupidity and laziness, to be tiresome. Hollywood has plenty of disdain to go around for us all.
This show doesn’t need a reboot at all
You're absolutely right. This show isn't for Black Americans. It's for non-Black people. To reiterate what you said, if a non-black person does not have a close tight-knit friendship with a Black person to counteract these stereotypes this show simply reinforces what these non-black people already believe about us as a people. Even if they throw in nuggets of uplifting messages, this show does a lot more harm than good when portraying us. This show looks like a minstrel and I wont be watching.
Another sad fact about this is that’ll also enforce those negative stereotypes to more homogeneous countries who’ll watch this overseas as well.
Some of those countries, particularly in Asia, do not even buy shows about Black people. Look at what happened with John Boyega on that Chinese *Star Wars* poster.
@@Attmay💯
I was out when I found out the baby is a drug dealer. Good time supposed to be about over coming poverty by not giving in to the trappings of it through family and education. Ty for your well thought out response. They trying to move black people backwards
Seth McFarlane...
The thing that has been forgotten in this cartoon is that they are talking about "real" people. There are people who look and act just like the characters depictions and absolutely nothing is funny about this. Its almost as if the actors they hired were B listed "hungry" actors that needed a check. How did all of these smart people think this is a show that would work in 2024?
@@Jay-jb2vr Yes, Seth McFarlane the Democrat is trying to keep black ppl portrayed as victims.
Is this payback for having to re-cast Cleveland Brown?
@Attmay It's possibly payback for The American Society of Magical Negreos
They went and turned Good Times into C**n Times!
Hood times
Micheal was smart , jj was an artist . The dad was a hard worker. The hard times was the system not us!!! Just ugh they missed the nail real bad
Exactly!🎯💯
Exactly!!! Every family member was a person of strong moral character and had positive contributions to give to society and community. You're so right, the hard times was the system... 💯💯💯
Right on!
Thelma was a dancer and beautiful.
That trailer had me feeling offended , disgusted and angry. Mainly because it ruins the legacy of the original show an takes from the message the actor's an actresses of the original show wanted to push forward.
Did you know two of the original actors are on the show?
Shows like this are the very reason, that Dave Chappelle canceled The Chappelle Show. I had 6 white roommates over the course of my collegiate years many of whom took from rap music, black movies, and shows like this the black experience. Hell I was called a black white guy because I was the opposite of portrayal of shows like this. This is why I hate performative and forced Diversity. This is utterly disgusting. The O.G. Good Times show didn’t break stereotypes outside of James and Florida being in a loving marriage. And this is even worse…
Same here, my college dorm mates were white and looooooved The Boondocks. They took The Boondocks as "the black experience" and this is how all black people act and talk
In the 1970's, there was nothing unusual about an intact black marriage.
The difference between the two is that Boondocks was a satire that was very clever in mixing the commentary of the Black characters in a suburban backdrop since the days of it's newspaper comic strip. The creator, Aaron Macgruder, was probably the youngest artist/writer at the time when it was published in the '88-'90's.The difference could be seen in the final season where he wasn't directly involved in the production, many considered season 4 to be like season 8 of GoT..THIS show (Good Times) completely misses the point of where the sitcom was coming from, which is part of the reason why John Amos left the show rather than play up to the DY NO MIIITE buffoonery..There were some deep and kinda dark episodes on the sitcom as well.
Don’t you have to watch an episode before you judge it?
@SmartDave60 I watched an extended version of that trailer,Seth..If there's any comparison, they wasted alot of time keeping out all of the funny parts.
@@SmartDave60after seeing the drug dealing baby I’d seen enough.
@@THEDARQUEKNIGHT there was a drug dealing child in the original Good Times.
@@THEDARQUEKNIGHT there was a drug dealing child in the original.
I just watched the trailer. April Fool's Day, right? If we pay close attention to MacFarlane's portrayals of blacks, he does nothing but extend black rachet stereotypes as "black people's truth." This is the modern version of minstrel shows, and, yes, they do have a cumulative effect. Boondocks was frequently painful in the stereotypes it presented, but it also internally critiques those stereotypes. MacFarlane appears to believe that he is an "ally" of black people by supporting stereotypes.
McFarlane is a big Democratic donor. And, remember... If you don't vote for Joe Biden, you ain't black.
This is how Norman Lear was the groundskeeper of the grave in which neoliberalism buried every civil rights and social reform movement in this country.
yeah e man, i'm not even gonna front...... i agree with literally everything you said. that trailer kinda pissed me off lowkey, this makes us as a community look bad ! I'm tired of seeing foolishness like this! SMFH !!!!!!!
Ooo, this looks like Velma, dystopian. Norman Lear passed away last year, I wonder how involved he was..
Agreed. Norman Lear probably had ZERO creative input. He just signed off on letting Netflix use his IP.
Every stereotype the actors on the original show was against they have them doing it on the animated version. I have zero plans on watching it, and hopefully it’s gets cancelled quickly.
It’s like they didn’t actually watch the show, but just put every criticism from people who were offended by it into AI and made that show instead.
This feels like why Dave Chappell left Comedy Central
Exactly I just said the same thing
Thank you for this breakdown.
The projects in Chicago have been torn down for a long time. This issue of the projects itself is a rough subject to talk about now
What about oblock
What did they replace it with?
Thank you for making this post brother, I watched the trailer this morning and yelled at my phone
I hate when they take classic beloved properties and turn them into modern trash. There is a reason why those old shows are comfort food, they are escapism . This on the other end is a reminder of today’s tv landscape wish is depressing.
Well said! 💯. I really don’t watch anything that will bring up past thoughts which were for the most part negative. Cartoons and shows were such a form of escapism for me.
Excellent take bro!!!
Great issue to bring up E-Man! First and foremost it has to be noted that Eric Monte's & Mike Evans are not happy and disapprove of this reboot happening, they have not given their support to this project, this seems to have come about without their knowledge. The late Norman Lear who allegedly took the idea of Good Times from Eric Monte's & Mike Evans gave it to Sony for the reboot. Norman took most of the credit and financial gain for the original Good Times.
Fair question, but who cares what Mike Evans or Eric Monte wants. Theyre against it because they weren't invited to be a part of it. If they were, you would be singing the direct opposite tune. You won't watch this show, but you'll turn around and say that boondocks has cultural significance. Make it make sense.
Mike Evans died almost 20 years ago.
And Eric Monte is in poor health and has had to rely on fan campaigns on the Internet to raise money for medical bills. When he wasn’t involved in the *Cooley High* Blu-ray supplements when he wrote the script, that shows how serious they were about shutting him out of Hollywood. I doubt he is in any position to issue a press release condemning this show.
You nailed it and thanks for doing so. The trailer did the opposite of its intent imo. The original battled stereotypes before even hitting the airwaves. This appears to feed directly into them. It’s negative propaganda at a time when we can’t afford it.
I'm sure in the full episode everything will be blamed on police, white ppl and "the system". So, basically the progressive Democrat message.
It seems Netflix “Good Times” cartoon creators took the edgy cues from a Dave Chapelle joke, “Boondocks”, and the original live action “Good Times”. The thing the creators of the new show didn’t understand is, all of the fore mentioned shows were from a point of view of safety. (Dave’s joke was about what he witnessed outside while sitting inside his limo) From the Netflix trailer, It looks like this new animated “Good Times” makes the viewer part of the madness. So to enjoy the show, you have to approve the foolishness going on rather than just witnessing it or suffering through it. If they had made the show about how a positive young family who was trying to survive amiss an atmosphere of violence and chaos (like the original live action Good Times and Boondocks and Dave Chapelle “Baby selling drugs joke”) it might have found an audience. But having us from a positive safe point of view is asking too much.
My thoughts EXACTLY...I saw the trailor and was pissed....we ALL need to write Netflix and voice our opinions.
Thank you for your insights. They lost me at baby drug dealer. Talk about #InPoorTaste
Well explained
I wouldn’t have known about this if not for your review. Thank you for covering. Now I have the opportunity to also voice my opinion to Netflix as well as do others.
Yooo why the mama got a blonde wig on??😂 hell nah

Im jewish , Irish mix age 58. I really enjoyed good times as a kid. I grew up in the Suburbs. I remember as a kid not knowing what racism was at all. I connected to shows, no matter what the color of anyone’s skin. I was made aware of racism for the first time I was made aware of racism was age 11 when the Dunns, an Irish family’s son called me a negative term they use for Jewish people. Their kid had to be 8 years old at the time. At age 11 remember thinking his mother and father must have taught him to hate Jewish people. From that moment on I was aware that people could hate you for just being different from them. Sad to say that over my lifetime racism has only become more apparent. Watching Good Times felt like watching family. That new cartoon, did not feel like family. It came across ugly, hatful, angry and stupid.
Based on my experience, Steph Curry is executive producer in name ONLY. EP credits means money invested and managed, not actual producer work.
Putting your name on THIS???
In short, he’ll be the fall guy when this shyt hits the fan & Sony, Netflix, et al will be the one’s taking home the cash. Fame & fortune are two different things.
So I just found out what went down with the Good Times show. Norman Lear stole the premise and the creators didn’t get their due. He also pushed the stereotypes which had James and Florida depart the show prematurely. Now we’re going to revisit the show and double down on the stereotypes even though the crest families are not supporting. I have listened to all respect for the black folk involved especially JB Smoove and Steph Curry. How callous and greedy to step over black folks suffering for a paycheck.
One of my issues, this is the third gen Evans still living in the same apartment.
That actually ignores the fact that they got a new apartment in the last episode.
I feel like this is an April Fool's joke. They are going to zoom out and show Huey Freeman watching the trailer on his TV and shaking his head.... Boondocks is coming back
If this is an April Fool joke, then cool, ha, ha!... Now let's play a "joke" on those other communities and amp up those stereotypes. Let's start with the Jewish one, that should be Hilarious.......Right?
*f(r)iends* is the most offensive depiction of Jews on TV I’ve ever seen.
The Netflix Good Times animation is a modern day minstrel show that I cannot wait to see get canceled hopefully during the first season
I didn't know this was a thing. I was torn with the original show as a child in the 70's. From what you said this seems even worse.
You should watch on a bootlegged platform then let us know what is going on! We need to know exactly what we are fighting against! Knowledge is power!
This show is for the dominant society!!!
Then why are all the voice actors black? Plus, drug dealer baby is based on a Dave Chappelle joke.
I see why you wore that t-shirt, I guess Steph is still "sleep", besides, his ass wasn't born when that show was aired. I think I'm going to call Dr. Umar Johnson. 😁
This is great content enjoyed your perspective. Boondocks is the goat. Steph airballed this lmao
I'm happy that you talked about this, man.
Dam, you really broke this shit down Good Brotha. The perception drives the politics ! It’s gradual effect. Almost like a constant stream of water that slowly erodes away stone.
Sir, this video is a dissertation in the making. After seeing the trailer immediately before this video, I have so much to say, but it funnels down to one major point: WE as Black people need to stop letting non-Black people portray us like this in various media platforms. It is rarely, if ever respectful or endearing towards us. Additionally, it does not help that some Black people perpetuate these stereotypes, which gives non-Blacks the "okay" to view us in these ways. Again, i have much more to say about this, but I just need to keave it at that main point. Excellent analysis on this video.
Only black ppl can change the perception or the reality of the black community. By all means, show the world more intact black families, great black art and less black crime. That would be wonderful.
You’re Soooo on Point with Your Breakdown.. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Also one of the writers is Nigerian. It makes perfect sense now
You sound darn near perfect, thank you for using your entertainment platform so responsibly - you took care of something important just now. Frfr.
It's not just about who's writing the show, but also who's HIRING writers in the first place.
Absolutely agree with you. I saw the trailer and asked myself 'what are they doing?' That is not Good Times. I understand needing to bring it to this decade but the content is not what Good Times was about. They are not honoring the original show with the direction they have taken. I would love to hear the thoughts from the original cast after they see it. But they need to change the name of this animated series. We will not be watching.
I'm with you on this
I'm white so i know my view may not matter but i can't believe someone thought this was a good idea. I'm to young to remember the original show that much but i can understand why people are upset it's the same thing that's been done to a lot of ip. They want to milk a name but they don't respect why the name mattered in the first place
Also, I didn't know until about 4 days ago that Cleveland from The Cleveland Show is actually voiced by a white man.
And? Should Samurai Jack be voiced by an Asian guy instead of Phil LaMarr?
@@samalton5837 That must've struck a nerve with you. I sense a bit of attitude in your response.
Not anymore.
Great take! Amazing Lucas shared the same opinion about which demographic of this show. I will not be watching this show and growing weary of these types of stories.
There are three specific bloodlines of northern Japanese that I saw in comics as a kid but didn’t think were actual bloodlines but character designs til I met the people descended from those families and got to know them
When i saw the title, i was already turned off WHO THE HELL ASJED FOR THIS?????!!!!!
The same people who wanted *wh’s th bss* back: nobody.
Said its also produced by Steph Curry, the NBA player, And Seth Macfarland
Very disappointing
For all the hate Velma gets it is a more effective attempt to try and be a 1970s-style social commentary sitcom than this looks.
Carol Jones walked away, in the beginning. We could of had a different show. Check out his tweet
Didn’t even know this was a thing until I saw your video in my feed. What were they thinking? 🤦🏾♀️
100% agree with everything you said. I wasn’t aware of this, “remake” of ‘Good Times.’ I will not support this in any way or fashion. This is not needed nor desired. We don’t need anymore depictions of African American struggle life. African Americans come from all walks of life.
Hear, hear! Stop making blackness the main trait of the characters. Oh, but that might cut into the DEI money...
lastly one writer departed from the show and he posted on twitter that he left over creative differences and have not seen any of the shows. His name is Carl something , forgot the brother’s last name .
For them to consider this a reboot for the classic show is a slap in the face to the original show and the community.
Thank you for your review. I already had some concern for this "reimagination" of Good Times, pretty sure I won't support it.
The Boondocks had some brilliant episodes on social commentary, but also had some clunkers where stereotypes were just played up for cheap laughs. There were times where I watched the Boondocks and was like hell yeah, and other times where I was like hell no and could barely finish the episode. Even so, it walked a very fine line that overall contributed to our social discourse and allowed people to think as you said. This Good Times reboot looks more like something that was created in Bamboozled or American Fiction, and it's kind of weird to see that happen despite Hollywood being familiar with those movies and their very cutting commentary.
Damn, you're absolutely right.
This is the PJs all over again.
That show is how Will Vinton’s Claymation studio ended up in the hands of the least authentic rapper who ever lived, Chilly Tee.
“Abbott Elementary” feels more like “Good Times” than this ““Good times”” reboot.
Great points ✊🏿
Norman Lear said he never knew nothing about this when Bernadette Stanis asked him about it. 😮😮😮
I agree with u 100 percent theres non black ppl that watch boondocks and dnt fully understand what to take from the moment

Peach preacher. They missed the ball on this one I think.
I agree 100%. This series looks like amazingly racist trash. I also want to thank you for keeping it real about the original tv series. While it wasn't nearly as bad as this animated sequel or spinoff looks, it was still very problematic. I've seen a few Black people arguing PASSIONATELY that John Amos and Ester Rolle didn't leave because of the racial problems with the writing. But, THEY DID. Thank you for speaking on that, and helping keep the history straight. People forget too easily.
Oh hell nah… … Im with you 💯!!!
Well said sir
This show is reminiscent of the debate in the movie American Fiction. Unfortunately, the characters are somewhat reflective of an aspect of our community that is far more prevalent than we would like. Having said that, this kind of negativity is not something that needs to be exalted anywhere. I have to believe that Ayesha Curry never saw this until it premiered. My concern is more for young kids in our community, many of whom will end up watching it because its a cartoon. The normalization of dysfunction is not something that needs another platform. Clearly, Netflix could stand more qualified black folk in their upper ranks to put mess like this in the reject bin.
E-Man in the immortal words of the Great Smokey Robinson "I second that Emotion..."
Thank you.
1,000%, ❤ Thank you.
All valid points… I explained to a Korean American woman at work, some people (I emphasize some) people of different ethnicities are so afraid of us is because we are defined by our worst. While other ethnicities have been stereotyped as well, the stereotype of others is not violence as the primary trope . I’m sure some people will ask what about Middle Eastern people seen as terrorist? Middle Eastern people can be mistaken for other ethnicities when they are walking down the street, especially in America. Point being people don’t cross the other side of the street, if they cross a person of Middle Eastern descent. I realize Americans of Middle Eastern descent caught Hell after 911 to the point they couldn’t wear anything to indicate they were of Middle Eastern descent but nowadays most people don’t bat an eye for the most part.
I can guarantee you some people do cross the other side of the street if a Middle Eastern person is walking by, and others don't cross the other side of the street if a black person is walking by them. You're just perpetuating beliefs in the stereotypes 😂😂
@@samalton5837 Understood, but a number of Middle Eastern people can be mistaken for other ethnicities was my point. A friend of mine who is Greek thought Saddam Hussein looked just like one of her uncles. So, if you harbor, prejudice views about Middle Eastern people, and you don’t know the person is Middle Eastern, why would you cross the other side of the street? I did emphasize some people of different ethnicities prejudge Black people, not all.

It's was heartbreaking to watch
My exact thoughts on this. We gotta stop acting separate when it comes to media because the whole entire world is watching shows like this.
Everyone's gonna complain about Netflix but no one's gonna cancel their Netflix membership.
After watching a bunch of reactions and thinking in it a few days. I think.....or hope.....the trailer is just bad and they shouldnt have called it Good Times. Listening to the end of the trailer, I think....or again hope, thisnosnactually s completely different story where they all have to go on some Action mission or something like that. Like, when film makers put the entire first episode or so in the trailer the series is completely different. Again just a Hopr and prayer as I kept watching the ENDing part of the trailer. Because...its a trailer. For people comparing to Boon Docks, I wonder if alot of people commenting were old enough or even be aware of where of Boondocks where it came from and what the original trailer looked like and where it was aired. Or did people just watch it on youtube 15 yrs later. But that's another discussion. Either way, great reaction. I feel you. This "looks" terrible but I'm thinking more on it.....there HAS to be a twist someplace. Lawd have mercy....please. lol *smh* I just wanted to let that out. Thanks if you read this far.

Bill Cosby owns Cosby Show. But why not a new “Cosby Show” or “It’s a different World”?
The late great John Singleton said it best: “Not everything “Black” is good “. I couldn’t, and didn’t want to finish watching the trailer. They can keep this animated minstrel show.
I don't think I'll be entertaining "Good Times" reboot either. Of all the animated reboots, I'd be interested in an animated version of The Facts of Life. Then again I'd suspect they'd ruin Tootie.
They already did with that shitty live version with Gabrielle Union playing the part. That whole thing was a waste of time. They should’ve gotten age-appropriate actors from Disney and Nickelodeon shows.
I agree
Well said E
This is really they think of us.
Perfect shirt for the perfect discussion. I was so disgusted watching that hodgepodge of foolery and foolishness that aggravated me for them having the unmitigated gall to attach the #GoodTimes name to those stereotype stuffed scenes of shenanigans... They playin' in our face. And to further add insult to injury, The comic who plays the baby in the show had some of the most ignorant replies possible which basic is obviously the ignorance he sold himself to get that check. He was on Comedy Hype for 9mins and was just as ignorant as the trailer itself insisting this POS is satire. 🤦🏾♀️ Edit. Added the clip. kzhead.info/sun/m86lc65wbKN9iYU/bejne.htmlsi=D1hAjAYcdSmrCbMB
