2009: The Beginning - A look back at Alabama's first championship season under Nick Saban

2019 ж. 13 Қар.

You remember the T-shirt: “Tebow cried. Cam Lied. LSU tried.”
There were different variations of the T-shirt after Alabama’s national championship run in 2009, which would be the first of five national championships under coach Nick Saban.
“This is not the end,” the Alabama coach said. “This is the beginning.”
But, before you can truly appreciate that national championship win, you have to understand the mindset, the personnel changes, the opponents and the obstacles standing in the Crimson Tide’s way.
The year before, the Tide was a victim of Urban Meyer’s Florida Gators. Tim Tebow ripped open the heart of the Crimson Tide as the Gators secured a second straight national title.
A stunning loss to Utah in the Sugar Bowl gave the Tide back-to-back losses in a season which started with a win over a ninth-ranked Clemson team “that announced Alabama on the national stage.”
Gone from the 2008 team were leaders Antoine Caldwell, Andre Smith, John Parker Wilson, Glen Coffee and Rashad Johnson. Those players replaced with names like Greg McElroy, Barrett Jones, Mark Ingram, Mike Johnson, Julio Jones, and Trent Richardson.
AL.com, on the 10th anniversary of the 2009 national title run, takes a three-part visual trip through what became the foundation for a modern-day college-football dynasty.

You can’t however, deny the fact that Bama has long been the golden standard in all of college football. There’s a reason they’re always favored in just about every game they play. Nonetheless, I love my Buckeyes, and always will. Just wanted to give Bama some respect.

Just goes to show you the good and bad ONE head coach can do, especially when you compare Coach Saban with Lane Kiffin. Kiffin leaving the WAY he did devastated the Vols and it's still being felt. It also illustrates just how great Coach Nick Saban actually is.

  • Its so crazy, I started being a true football/bama fan in 2005 but still didn't really didn't understand the ins and outs until 2007-08. And once I watched and saw how amazing the 2008 team was, I said in the offseason, the 2009 team is going to win a championship and I will spend every bit of my free time this one year (I was a freshmen in college so my classes weren't too hard so I had a good bit of free time) researching and following every single football player on this team and learning every stat and reading every post about them, and that was the only team I did that with and I knew I would never have that kind of time again to follow a team like that one, and when bama played UT(I was at that game) and they lined up to kick the game winning FG I was literally pale white and light headed, thinking that this one special year that we may actually not win, and then one of the most amazing moments happened with the Cody block, and the rest is history. I love all bama championships and know a good bit about the teams, but there will never be a team I will cover and follow more closely than this 2009 team. Was a truly special group.

    • I remember that game like it was yesterday. Didn’t get to watch much of it except towards the end. And they lined up the kick and Cody blocked it and I remember thinking why did they show a replay ( he had blocked a kick earlier in the game) like why would they do this now and then the place erupted and I realized that it wasn’t a replay Cody had blocked ANOTHER KICK! Amazing moment!

    • McElroy's problem was his timing. He got to the SEC at the most pivotal moment the conference experienced since Integration. Historically, he would've fit in with the rest of the greatest QBs in SEC history, but he finished his career when the Spread Revolution guys like Tim Tebow and Cam Newton were ushering in was changing the conference forever. Being sufficient was no longer acceptable. You had to be a dazzling playmaker yourself now. AJ McCarron was easily better than Greg, John Parker Wilson, Brodie Croyle, and Tyler Watts. Easily. You'd think being the starting QB at Alabama at that time at the height of the Dynasty would open it's own doors, but it didn't. He couldn't do what Johnny Manziel, RG3, and Jameis Winston were doing, so he got overlooked. It was all about versatility now. There's a reason Blake Sims (of all people) replaced AJ at QB the very next year.

He's a good coach. Mark Ingram and Richardson was on another level. Another half a second Tennessee would of got another shot at that field goal cause of Cody taking his helmet off too soon. Auburn is king of the trick plays. I'm glad we had Kiffin at that Auburn game calling that pass call to win it for us was awesome.

  • Nick Saban is the greatest college football coach of all time. He is a playaway here and there from winning multiple national championships he did not win. And at the time of this post ,he has seven overall six at bama and one at LSU. The entire time he has been coaching at Alabama he has lost less games than the average SEC team in a two-year span, give or take a few games. As an Alabama fan I felt every one of those losses, but it's good to know that a bad season for Alabama is not winning the national championship. Other than Nick Saban himself the fans demand perfection.

  • Saban definitely played a part in taking down Tennessee and Florida’s reign of the SEC, Tennessee’s reign officially ended in 2009, that season pretty much sealed the deal, obviously the end began a few years before that. One day it’ll change, Tennessee will be back on top, football has tides (no pun intended), both Tennessee and Bama, being the two most successful SEC programs have had there fair share of both low and high tides, although Bama seems to have more high tides than Tennessee. My only wishes is that one day all the SEC Greats, LSU, Bama, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, will all be great at the same time, we’d have some pretty epic races to get to the SECCG
