Beginning work on an altered book that will be filled with collage bits from some of my favorite journal makers and Etsy sellers. This video shows how to alter a book and I'll begin collaging the first few pages. Thanks for watching!

  • Your voice and the sound of you making art with books just stopped an anxiety attack I was having. Just wanted to say thank you. Got lost in this and then realized the anxiety was gone. Very calming and definitely inspiring.

  • Whenever I alter a book, I tend to obliterate everything - I quite like this gentle way of altering, leaving some of the pages with illustrations intact. You gave me some good ideas, thank you!

  • Time spent here with you is just like going to your besties house to craft together. You make me laugh and you dont act like a professional in that you arent afraid to let loose and say something silly or even once in while kind goofy. I feel like I just spent time with a good friend jokin and having fun. I need this like you cant even imagine Gayle so thank you. Oh and I'm making an altered book so this is very informative on top of havin a blast. Marlene. and I dont mean you arent professional in what you do. It's just you can have fun while working.

  • Gayle I think you need to decorate however you want. You absolutely love the distressed look, so do it! Everyone I watch has a different style and each brings inspiration and new techniques along with them. I do not expect them to do the same thing and indeed I do not want them to. Stay true to what you love, and continue to love what you create. We do!

  • I had no idea which direction you were headed here. There are so many versions of book altering, but I am pretty sure this one is my fav. The pages have such a sense of random order, if that is even a thing. You are so good about always adding the small things that tie the pages together. Go ahead and ink away, my friend. If you are happy, we are happy!

    • As a kid I watched Romper Room every single day. I loved Miss Florence. I waited, with bated breath, to hear my name called out at the end of the program. She said all my siblings names on various days but never my name. I couldn’t figure out how she saw my siblings, who were at school, but couldn’t see me right in front of the TV. Then on the day Miss Florence finally said my name I was over the moon happy. My faithful viewership finally paid off. The first 15 years of my life I only met 1 other “Andrea”. It was not a wildly popular name. When I graduated from college, in just one of my college classes, there were 5 “Andreas”. It’s nice to know I’m not the only Andrea in the world anymore. 🥳💁🏻‍♀️👏🏽

  • I work on a glass desk and I found out it makes certain craft tools slide out of place. I make sure I use my mat or tape brown craft paper on it. Great tutorial on altering an old book. On my to do list. I came across old typing paper from back in the day at my mom’s house, apparently my dad had bought it for my sisters and I when we had typing homework back in the early 70’s, it’s almost like tracing paper, very light and I was able to print on it using my printer. The paper also aged over the years, so happy to see that. My dad was a crafter himself, found some hidden goodies that I could use in Junk Journals. Would you gesso lightly over the words in the book and then collage over it, kinda do a mix media page in the book? It’s such a pleasure watching your videos. TY 😎

One of the books, the pages are very old and when I folded a page, it almost ripped in half, so I will be treasuring this book, but I will use pages from the other books, in some of my junk journals. • Hi Gayle, You are my favorite person to craft with me in my craft room! Good thing you only take up the space of a tablet because it's full of supplies! About your ruler tearing...the ruler must be completely flat on the table. The ruler with the little metal edge isn't. Flip to the wood side to tear against. Try tearing with your dominant hand and hold with your non dominant hand. And always tear off the largest piece with the small one held under the ruler. Hope this helps. Thank you for inspiring me to make journals. I absolutely love it.
