Why Are Valve Clearances So Important? | Classic Mini 998 | Workshop Diaries | Edd China

Before we check anything else on this Classic Mini 998, we need to set up the valve 'timing' or more specifically; the valve clearances!
Do you know why Valve Clearances are important?
Workshop Diaries - From Season 2 Episode 11 "Why Are Valve Clearances Important?": ...(What goes on under the rocker cover) If you haven't set your tappets correctly your engine might be losing loads of power. My mission is to fix what is causing the pithy problem of a flat spot on my classic Mini 998 cc Automatic engine in my Outspan Orange car.

I've been mechanicing for many years now and there is always more to learn and I still enjoy your presentation of a procedure that I have done hundreds of times. Thanks Edd for clear instructions and clear images if I was starting out now I would be very grateful for your channel and your interesting projects 👍

  • Hi Edd, I used to have a Mini 998 back in the day, I used to use a colour tune plug to check the mixture ratio when I was giving it a tune up however, what I found was, with everything you have done, if I tuned the mixture to a brilliant blue it always had a flat spot, what I found was if it had the tiniest flash of yellow in it (running very slightly to the rich side of the scale) the flat spot disappeared. Also talking to my cousin at the time who is a motor mechanic he informed me that the Mini 998 engine likes to run slightly towards the rich side and when I set up mine that way it was fine and at the time of lead fuel I always had a light coating of grey in the exhaust tail pipe. Not sure if this applies with today's fuels but just thought I would mention it.

  • As important as tappet adjustment is it's often a job that gets overlooked or put off but there's no excuse really with good old, easy to adjust, screw and locknut types. The added complexity and faff of under-bucket shims requiring camshaft removal just adds to the "I'll check them later" syndrome!👎 I had a similar problem on an FZR1000 some years ago when the power delivery lost it's edge and the idle became quite lumpy. After checking the obvious, the valve gaps were checked and most were below spec with two closed up completely and this was on a bike bought new and long before the specified valve check interval which just shows that the service schedule is really just a guide to the minimum maintenance requirements. Thankfully, after setting the gaps, the performance was back so fortunately avoided any valve/seat damage.👍😃

  • Talking of bikes and scooters, I bought myself a Lambretta SX 200 way back in 1982 for around A$50 in a little town named Figuras, just outside Barcelona. At 17 y.o. I rode it back to Glasgow, town of birth, and on the way, when I'd broken down crossing the Pyrenees, it was none other than the infamous Johnny Thunder who cruised to a stop on his chopper, and fixed my bike for me. What a sight that was, I tell you. As of 2014 though I have a Ural 750, with sidecar.

    • We have a classic Mini which has an unknown history so it is definitely a job that needs doing. It is a really easy (if not a slightly fiddly) job. The thing to watch on the paper element oil filters is the O-ring between the filter case and the engine; really easy to miss. I even heard of one garage adding a second O-ring which ended up causing a serious oil leak at high speed! Watch this space.

Im a certified technician for Honda so i started troubleshooting. and about 30 minutes of tinkering and troubleshooting. I looked at the service history, it stated it recently had donne the valve clearance at a random brand shop.. I called up the customer asking when it started, and the customer confirmed it was after that service. I took it appart, did a new clearance and boy o boy everything was so far off i didnt even belive it at first. did the correct meassurement, and the car was sooooo much better afterwards. im thinking they adjusted the engine when it was super hot. not letting it cool down first :P
