A very real onest review, a breath of fresh air for a car channel. În my opinion they try to recreate the E60 headlights but failed and the light steering it's really not good for bmw.

Design aside, I think its ridiculous that BMW removed the exhaust pipes That was one of the MAIN things that I loved about BMW as a kid, when my dad got his first f30 touring. It looked so cool compared to the other cars that only had bumpers or to feel 'special' that I was part of the exposed exhaust group on the road. I hate to think of reasons why they did this, but i can only imagine it is for us to get used to the electric design language, but even that idea is pulled out of my ass.

I agree 100% with all your points of criticism. If BMW chooses to go with the same platform for electric and ice powered vehicles, why make them look like they re all electric. The lci g30 is so much more mature, stylish, elegant and powerfull design wise.

My family has had over 35 bmw in the last 25 years, we basically had all the M cars to have, as well as all the 5 series since 1995. BMW direction is indeed very scary: For the Sports car, since the G Gen, we switched to the GT department of Porsche, which has fully gave us what we were looking or. For the dailies however, it is though, as on the market there aren't any valid alternatives that can live on the FORMER BMW Legacy. Our attitude towards new models changed drastically, before we were always excited for the model, about what crazy innovation it might have brought from the racing world, or what design trait might have introduced to the market. NOW WE ARE SCARED, up to a point which we will start front-loading all the last FEW cars entailing the real essence of our passion, in vision of the future. This is true for the entire car industry, but particularly more for BMW, which has deluded once again it's most passionate customers. On top of this, all (other) medias seem to be happy with the latest non-sense in the car community, probably incentivised by some hefty commissions. Keep it up, Giak

Totally agree with your comments on the quality is going down day by day.Previous version luxury package and the one which is facelift are the ones which are my favorite for not only visual basis but also driving feels too.

On this one the stupid grille is the only chrome part on the exterior which looks ridiculous and also it's way too big in proportion to the front.. First 5 series that I hate!

Thanks to this new generation, I love my 540i G31 even more, and will keep it much longer than originally planned. It may be my last bmw. It is a shame as I fell in love in the brand well over 30 years ago buying second hand e28 as my first bmw.

Last week I had a 740d as a rental. The new model with the bicycle stand grille. Very decent comfort but operating all the functions of the car is truly a nightmare. The revenge of German engineering.

Well the S class especially the w223 has a very cheap looking interior, coming from a w221 and w222 S class owner, the G70 seems to be a better to drive car than the w223 is

It seems to me that BMW has also lost the plot when it comes to design. It was sad to see Mercedes look bad, but BMW too. This has to be the worst-looking set of BMW designs in a while, after such a great run in the last 12 years. Honestly, that's it, just going for a flying spur. At least Bentley is succeeding where everyone else is failing. Porsche too.
Yeah yeah, everyone says this literally every time a new generation of BMW comes out. Yawn... come up with a better critique. BMW is shattering the competition in terms of design as they are doing what they did in 2003, a complete change for the future state of cars. Audi is boring and Generic, and mercedes still looks modern yet old. BMW has completely changed the name of the game for future state of car design, always met with harsh judgement at first, and then a couple years down the road, praise.

Sorry, there is not a single detail in this car which hasn't been seen at other car brands. (Except the Logos) The Cars from the Bangle Era were revolutionary in terms of design, or maybe more recently the i3. But defenitely not the new 5 series. Anyway - this shouldn't be a problem. Most times, only people who have something to complain write comments and people who like the car often don't comment.
Tbh the new e, c and s-classes all look good in my opinion but the EQS and EQE though absolutely horrible.
objectively the Mercs (non eq) look quite decent for comparison. s class vs 7 series e class vs 5 series. clear decision for me and my friends..
I don't know what happened to BMW lately, but for sure this new 5 series is not up to the segment it should belong to. I personally have a G21 320d, which I absolutely love, and since I'm going to change it in a few months I had the opportunity to evaluate the 5 series, but I said heck no, not this one! I already ordered another G21, and this time will be a 330d with the glorious 6 cilinder, and a nice spec. With the same budget as a bland 5, I will get again the best BMW I can have (at least IMHO).
Have fun with the LCI 3 series. No Ambient lighting in the door pockets Cheaper steering wheel (plastic) No key storage beside the steering wheel (on the left) No nets on the back of the front seats. No laser light anymore And a generally cheaper feel. 100% better than the 5er but still. I told my dad he should keep his G21 pre facelift as long as possible
As a G20 pre-LCI owner, I agree. I personally chose to buy the pre-LCI after I saw that slab they stuck on the dash.

Those 3er are pretty bad, heavy and with a bad weight distribution (around 52.5/47.5 for rwd). Also diesel 6 is not as good as the gasoline 6.
You hit the nail on the head. My family has been buying BMWs since the mid 80s and it’s been getting worse. By far our families favorite BMW was a 91 e34 535i. Amazing car at the time and looked modern for many, many years. My mom handed it down to me as my first car and then it went to my brother. 250k miles before we donated it and it was still going strong. Last BMW my fam had was the first X5 before going big family haulers (Land Cruisers) Fast forward to 2021 and my mom wanted to get back into BMWS, she ended up getting an X3 m40i. She loves it, mostly the drive and power but she was shocked at how much plastic and cost cutting there was everywhere. She’s getting an X5 50e M sport soon which just may be the last one if they continue down this path.

@@dubber4lifeFor real, Hyundai is killing it with their N-models. The i30 N (fastback) is one of the most fun cars I have ever driven. A friend of mine is getting an Elantra N and I can't wait to drive it. And that's coming from someone who daily drives an M340i, which is a very fun car too, but the i30 N tops it in the fun department for me. I might get myself an N-model for my next car I think, since BMW is losing its touch and I'm thinking of switching brands after 20 years of BMW

My biggest gripe is with the interior. I really don't like these screens, they look like they were added on over the existing design. The first version of screens were nicely integrated, like in the G20 pre-LCI or G30.
I have used that for 7 months already, nothing to complain about in real use.

As a g20 lci owner, I really feel like that the 3 series is the much better car. I already sat in the new 5 series, and I think that the 3 Series Looks soo soo much better than the new 5 series, and that the interior is also much better. I think that everything in the 5 series feels quite cheap, I really dislike the steering Wheel and the new Idrive controller also feels weird to use. Another thing that I thought is horrendous in the new 5 series is the seating positon, because I felt like I was sitting in a minivan or a small SUV, because you sit quite high, which does not feel familiar in a BMW. Overall I have to say that I am incredibly dissapointed by the new 5 series, and I think that the „older“ g20 3 series is the much better car.
Very true, I’m also an owner of a 330i LCI and while I haven’t sat in the new 5 series it doesn’t look that appealing - even the ambient lighting. Also the taillights don’t match the looks of the front of the car and even makes the car look cheaper. I heard that the driving dynamics are still ok but not as sharp even though their chassis is sitting higher probably due to its need for placement of the big battery.
I sat in the new 7 series and strangely there seemed to be a major lack of driver leg room. I'm 186cms and I felt pretty cramped. Completely different to the S-Class for driver leg room to the pedals.
G20/21 LCI will be one of the last good BMWs for a long time it seems.
Also have g20 LCI and after test driving new 5 series I feel absolutely no need to get one. I wanted one before I tested it, but its quality feels just so much downgraded compared to f10 for example that it doesn't feel the 5 series anymore. It is just a car. Rear seat is uncomfortable which shouldn't be the case anymore after all of the added length, cupholders changed from premium to very cheap as armrest as well. Comfort seats were one of the most important things since forever and now they removed all the important functions like tilting upper part. I5 m60 is a good car but compared to 330e lci it is nothing special which would make me pay double the price.
I jumped into the G60 from my F10 and thought I just jumped into a 3 Series. BMW tried to reduce cost on things they think we wont notice. But it's the small details that matters.
Got a 530d F11 LCI one of the best BMW designs ever. Still looks brand new 😊
It's sad to think that we are probably the last generation that is going to enjoy beautiful BMWs with massive engines, lots of power, great sound and manual gearboxes
You’ll think “ill get used to it”, until its compared to the previous gen😢. If you get the carbon black paint with the other 20 inch wheels (the silver and gloss black ones), the code name is 938, with these, i think it looks alright, but in any other spec, im not too sure

I fully agree with you! I wanted to buy a 5 series limousine but they already had the new G60 model, thus I bought the G31. And I do not regret it any second. Two months after my brand new G31 arrived I got to see a G60 in person ... boy, that car is not what I would want to buy. The front and back with all the useless Black-ish plastic bits, the cheap (comfort) seats and the new dash ... "very, very good copy by a Chinese company" describes it perfectly.
I've had exactly this feeling when only looking at pictures and videos. Seems like a step back (except for the vegan leather, I like that actually). The previous 5-series looks better both in and out.

Just for info, underneath the boot floor (which gives out an impression that it is fixed) the car battery is placed. To reach it, you can lift the floor padding. Only what you need is some hooked shaped improvised tool to slide underneath the padding.
I agree 100% - the design is disappointing, as is the drop in quality of the materials, inside and outside 😮 I have a G30 LCI in M sport trim in the same colour as the car you tested and have to say I think my car looks way better! Maybe I’m biased, but honestly I wouldn’t swap it for the new one. It’s a backwards step for BMW in my opinion.

I think the main problem is the M Sport cosmetic package: if you go on the configurator and choose a more “basic” trim the look of the car changes completely and looks really good in my opinion…even by changing the rims only

100% agree with your comments. Been driving BMW 5 series for 15 years, different models. But this doesn't look like a BMW. I now own a G31 and I seriously believe I'll skip this 5 series and buy something else in future. Have spend so much money for BMWs but those cars all look the same these days.
I like it how BMW still increases the size of these cars and makes them more and more practical over time despite sticking to 5 series weight rations. It makes it really interesting to have compared to some competitors like Mercedes Benz or Audi. Though I don't like it how they went away from the German Baukasten Format to something that is more curved. The sidelines on the G30 were just perfect and now the engine hood literally falls down like a river very quickly. It makes the car look like a FWD platform from outside. Also I don't like the headlights (neither do I on the G30 LCi I miss my 4 Angel Eyes) They look very 1 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupe like. This car in total just looks like an upsized balloonized 2 series Gran Coupe with the exception of being a RWD Car. I would even go as far as annoying other BMW fans by saying: VW Passat B8 Sedan in R-Line looks better than this car. Of course the G30 preLCI is king but still, this opinion of mine speaks bands for me.

Hope some companies will make an affordable fix for the removed exhaust tips. Those were the thing, that made you feel special while other companies made what they know also make.

I sadly had similar impressions when checking out the new model in person. For the first time a new 5 series came out, I was not impressed. I honestly feel like I would rather stick to my G30 for now.
@@enjoylife756 No one is forcing me to buy anything, I will keep driving my G30 for many years, but obviously eventually it will need replacement. That's not the point though, new model is supposed to be desirable more than the old model, otherwise where is the improvement. This new car feels like it was done with cost cutting to meet competition's EV specs in mind. And yet the price is still higher.

i am very happy with my e60 LCI, i have a 3.0 petrol engine (n53b30a) and a manual gearbox, bonus to that exclusive edition and has around 1550kg, no need for new models.
Max, Always enjoyed watching your review(s). I own a G30 2017 530i M-Sport and I did a facelift to the F90 M5 LCI recently. I only decided to do the facelift to the F90 M5 LCI bodykit + Laserlights after eagerly waiting for the G60 update over the G30. Sadly I was disappointed, as with you. I am glad I did the facelift upgrade to my G30, looks like I'll be keeping my G30 for years to come, until BMW decides not to produce any more engine oil filters for replacements...

I got g30, 530d xdrive :) and actually went to see new 5 series. I don't hate it but don't like it at all. From behind looks like jaguar, inside like not well designed octavia and from skoda as well. As well got 2021 730d xdrive which I love vs new 7 series. 😢😢😢😢😢v

AS I GOT AN IDEA through video about "the small 7 series" I felt like it's a mercedes benz C220 w203 but with less heavy steering but a dead one I loved that car a lot (w203) how it was light weight but calm, stable and classily heavy in drive feeling and as many mercedes we build trapezoids with its steering wheel (that is a bit dead but truly functionnal) it's nostalgic
The LCI was so perfect they knew they cannot beat it, so they clearly didn't even try.

I'm a proud owner of a pre-LCI G30 540i and I think I might keep it longer than anticipated. 02:10 - This car looks like a cheap Chinese copy because it was presumably designed for Chinese market. 10:36 - At least BMW drivers will now have a good excuse for not using indicators. 😄😄😄 13:42 - I was hoping this not to be true. Unfortunately, this could make me do the unthinkable and buy a Mercedes E-class next. I think the new E 450 will be a very praised car in the near future.

I was really afraid about the looks of the BMW 5. I was expecting worse. Recently tested the i5 M60. Power is a bit over the top and and range a bit low. I did see the new 5 touring in avant premiere and it does look acceptable, some minor details I don’t like. As for the 520i, it is sufficient, but I’d rather have a bit more power.
Power true, but I have serious doubts about optics, exterior and especially the interior without buttons. We need buttons! And exhausts on the outside. This thing doesn't quite stand above an Ioniq 5 which I recently drove. This is simply not worth it tbh.
Man it’s struggling to get above 200 😂. It’s not meant for the autobahn. It is however a great car for the Netherlands.

I really think that if max would design cars he would have the most successful car company because in an era where everything is turning into fake , plastic and touch sensitive he would at least on some plastic parts he would make them look nice , the interior would have actual buttons and not too many and big screens the fake parts would at least be little worse than the expensive parts and better than the plastic ones and he would have I think one of the best if not the best cars on the market

But with the black front part which you find in every new 5 series, with or without M-package, you are not longer able to have a car with just one color. There will always be the black front. I mean sure, BMWs style was a little bit more sporty than Mercedes-Benz, but this is a little bit to sporty for the base model in my opinion. Other than that, I really like the whole exterior design, especially from the side. I would love to have the old Infotainment element instead of the curved screen. It looked more integrated and not like something you just smash on top. But maybe we will get used to it. Buuut I really love that there is an electric 5 series. Super expensive compared to the combustion engine, but the i5 seems to be really good. To own a 5 series is my biggest dream. So the good thing is that there will be plenty of not so expensive G30 in the next years :D Thank you for the video, really like it! ^^

I drove the 520d xDrive, i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60 and especially the suspension and steering setup in the M60 was pretty convincing. I keep saying that people need to drive it instead of just looking at it. They all are really fun to drive, considering we are in a business class sedan. But I agree, they are really doing the same thing like with the E90, saving every Cent possible. The whole development budget went into tech and this is the one thing most people aren't really ready for. Adjusting to OS8.5, using AssistPlus, etc.

New 5 series are hybrids of front from series 2 combined with rear from new series 7 in my opinion. Love the rear because I love new 7's rear, but front is a thing we have to get used to. Overall G30 is the best modern model projected so far.
Also the 5 series looks like a 6 series GT from the side, and it is the same length.

I think alot of these interior and quality issues could be a cause of eu restrictions and movement towards evs. It is a modern trend, emmision controll has made cars alot more expensive and i am guessing bmw wants to keep it more reasonably priced than it would be if they built it like they usually do. I guess there is just so much hype about the 7 and 3 series with the suvs that they couldnt bother with the 5 series. Shame really...
Target market for BMW is China. Chinese customers have different tastes in cars and BMW admited in public that they build their cars specifically as the Chinese people like it and they don’t take any other markets into consideration.
Design, quality, reliability and desirability of BMWs goes down on consistent bases! And I used to be BMW fan and owner of several new BMWs.

Picked up my new M4 Comp today. The interior is such high quality. If BMW are reducing the quality of the 5 Series I think they’ll regret it. 5 Series customers want quality!
I like the front end of your car but I really hate the design of the M4 coupè from the side, anyway I admit it's a good deal for the performance that offers, compared to the car I'm looking for (an used 2017-2019 porsche 991 4s with ceramic brakes).
I was waiting for the new 5 series, was planing to update from a F30 330 XI LCI, but after seeing it, I'm going for the G30 LCI, probably a 540 XI. I my opinion, the G30 is the best looking 5 series ever.
I currently own the G30 and have ordered the new G60 in 550e. It still has the spirit of the 5 series, with its long hood and bevelled trunk. I think it'll take a while to like it, but you'll come to love it. One thing's for sure: it's a shame we don't have real exhaust pipes any more. We're stooping to Audi's level. As for the rest, I'm sure I'll enjoy driving and admiring my new 550e.

I have my g30 facelift for 2 years. It is a daily joy to drive. Ergonomics are very fine I like listening to my audiobook each time I get in with no action other than driving. Everything falls naturally in my hands. No need to multiple actions. All is simple. Comfort leather seats are gorgeous. The 530l trunk was not belated by recent cars. The car handles like a smaller car. It is quite light lightweight (less than 1700kg). The quality is perfect everywhere. I hated to buy so many options. No I almost forgot this but it came at a price. At least every options works perfectly, it is like the car itself : sleek design, élégant, and perfectly operational. I have Mhev 2liter 4 cylinder. It works fine and silently. I I miss my old 3.0 six cylinder from my previous E39. But I must admit performance is superior now and fuel efficiency made a step forward. What can I expect from the G60 version ? It became so huge and heavy but with no improvement in capacity or space. It is a screen infotainment with complex ergonomics. The design is just as you said : I don't really like it. I know the challenge was to make a tall beast loaded with 350kg electric batteries look reasonably elegant. Did they succeed ? I would say, to some extent, yes. It does not look bad. But as time will go we will realize how perfectly balanced the g30 was in comparison.
Probably the most honest review on the new 5. I had an e46, e 90, f11 and now I own a gorgeous Jatoba color 530xd G31 with Oyster interior. When I saw the new 5, first time ... I thought to myself ... 'I have to see it live, because it's not possible to look so bad'. Well ... it looked even worse in reality. Didn't drive one though ... but I will wait on that part.
This design takes my personal new lead in worst looking BMWs, followed by E36 compact. And a 5-series with a 4-cylinder already sounds weird.. I combine 5 series with inline6 engines at least. That 4 cylinder sound makes this 5-series feel like an 3 series at max.
Every 5 series generation has had a 4 cylinder. If it was not selling then they would not be making it. It honestly is plenty since most of these lower power 5 series are company fleet cars . But yes a 6 cylinder is alot better and it is coming to the g60 in hybrid atleast which is honestly pretty god damn good.

Exactly my opinion too, it screams of cost savings, especially at the interior. A short list, no more laser lights at the exterior, at the interior the lower door panels are hard plastic and no fabric on the interior like the G30 had, the sunshades are covered in cheap plastic, the steering wheel hub, plastic again, phone storage not anymore with cover, cup holders in the back not covered anymore, no more backseat pockets, no more led strip on the back doors, sunroof is not openable, less physical buttons, less physical buttons and settings for the comfort seats too, cheap windows opening buttons, no more Sensatec stitching (optional on G30), smaller door pockets (as the subwoofers are not anymore underneath the seats), no more dedicated button for setting the distance against the car in front (is in OS menu now), no more door entry sealings.
I can forgive the bulky exterior design because it's clearly a transitional vehicle where the side panels also need to hide the batteries of the EV version. But the cost cutting is unforgivable. I sat in the vehicle at a car show and was sure that the interior materials were still pre-production but no. Some of the cheapest most scratchiest plastics right in the field of vision and touch. The quality of materials is worse than in a G30. The bean counters who decided that this was acceptable in a 5 Series deserve to be slapped in the face. Fully understand the anger in this video.
