New BMW 5 Series review - still the best?
The BMW i5 - it has finally arrived!
This is the first all-electric version of the iconic 5 Series saloon and sits between the i4 coupe and range-topping i7 limo.
While you get a large set of kidney grilles, they are not as intrusive as on the i4 or i7 - except for the weirdly placed sensor cover. You’ll also see flush door handles, alloy wheels ranging from 19- to 21-inch units and lots of blue flashes to ensure everybody knows it’s an electric car.
Inside, it’s a classic BMW - professional, tidy and filled with tech. The German brand has also increased the cabin size to make the already comfortable interior even more accommodating. The boot is practical too.
When it comes to the 5 Series, the entry-level uses a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that puts out 208hp. When it comes to the i5, the entry-level i40 uses a single motor that puts out 340hp and is equipped with an 82kWh battery pack which comes with a claimed range of up to 361 miles.
The range-topping i5 is the M60, which has two motors that combine to put out 601hp. It has the same 82kWh battery pack, which is good for a range of 320 miles.
But as with all BMWs, how it drives is just as important - so how does the i5 fare when Mat takes it for a spin? Watch the full review here to find out!

New shape BMWs make previous models look even better.
You will probably post the same sht when the next one after this is unveiled
@@NotMyAccount it’s not nostalgia for the past it’s just true that the current BMW’s are ugly as fuk. They’re full of LCD’s inside, and they’re only trying to distract us from the monstrous exterior. Bangle's 7 Series looks amazing now.
@@NotMyAccount When the next one be unveiled, probably we're going to see other cars because we know the next would be ugly. 😅 These cars are damaging BMW's public image.
They designed the new gen of 5th to be an electric vehicle from the scratch. So It just couldn't be the same as it was.
I thought the front was bad until I checked the back end 😂😂😂 the design team is seriously on stuff
Seriously, it looks like an '04 Accord.
First they ruined the 2 series, now it's the 5 too, what happened?
Would love to know what you drive. No idea haha
It’s that black trim at the bottom. The regular one looks so much better with one solid color
Nah I think they were on vacation
It’s honestly really sad to see how much BMW’s designs have fallen off within the past decade, especially with their EVs.

@@honglee6880I understand that it’s gonna start hurting sales. Haven’t seen nearly as many 7 series driving around as i used to but tons of s classes

I like the previous design better That was a perfect blend of sporty and luxury
i was going to write this exactly
It was a modern E39. This one from what I hear was inspired by the E60, but the E60 looked way better than this.
F series BMWs had the best design imo. Just the right mix of sporty and classy without looking ostentatious.
Of course, during the previous design, everyone criticized that one. People love to slam BMW, but they make the best cars with the most dynamic designs in the luxury segment (outside Porsche, of course)
@@trevorjohnson16 I thought criticism of the G30 design was stupid. The G60 on the other hand truly is discordant. I would put Mercedes designs up there with BMW and Porsche, especially in the past two generations with MB’s core sedans and even SUVs all looking incredibly attractive and sportier than in the past. BMW seems to have one ugly generation every 20 years and then quickly recover. The G70 and G60 ushered in the next one. After the 3 (and the E90 wasn’t bad looking so there is hope!), some sanity should be restored to their designs.🥴
What a great time to get the previous gen 5 series particularly the m550i for that v8

Yup, my last BMW will be the 2022 model. I will never buy an electric car.
3 is still good tho
I don't know man, those plastic looking side skirts make it look somewhat cheap in my opinion. The same goes for the back bumper.
Dont worry they compensate the cheap look with a higher price. Balanced, as all things should be
There are many plastics. I work with plastics. There are plastics more expensive than the whole car. It looks cheap but less weight, durability against fire and so one

Can we at LEAST put the screens into a traditional gauge cluster shape? Who was the genius to just slap screens and call it a day?
this is the thing i will miss the most on future cars, every manufacturer is going that route, it's ugly and cheap and i can't stand it
It is not 1990 anymore
Let some talented, "based" and truly enthusiastic graphic designers and developers of the game industry work on BMW's digital gauge clusters and the result will be better, both in visual glamour and in functionality/ergonomy. Heck, they probably could improve the layouts and functionality of fighter jets' digital screens. Digital gauge clusters could have hundreds of "skins" pre-installed.
Someone fresh out of design school who has only driven a Tesla. It really is worthless and obviously unreadable. You can tell from the video it's reflecting everything. It wouldn't be as bad with some kind of shroud, the shape isn't really the issue, it's the way it's presented and fitted.
Exactly. This obsession with big screens just slapped on the dash is so unimaginative and not aesthetically pleasant in any way.
Saw it last week at my local BMW dealership, must say the car looks way better than the pre release pictures showed.
It is beyond belief that a car that costs FROM £74,000 does not have auto cruise control, and then alt.reed through the screen. Madness. I think BMW are really out pricing themselves with the current t range of cars. Does it have heated steering wheel? That drip sounded like water landing on a plastic tray. Would drive me mad 😊
When was it ever the case that moving up to a more luxurious car brand gave you more features?
The last gen 5 Series was the best looking Saloon in recent times imo. Now they ruin it!
Well they always ruin it. BMW is always like BMW.😅

I would give it a generous 3 out of 10 for its looks. Somehow the standard version looks better than the one with M package.
The standard look better because the front isnt just painted black for some stupid reason. And that puny rear spoiler looks dumb and tacked on. Imo of course. I think id go for a 4/10 tho

This looks like something GM would release for the European or Australian market. Would make a fine Opal or Holden that's going to be primarily sold to be a part of rental fleets.
Alas, Holden is no more. Thanks for nothing, GM.
@@coopdivi Indeed.
@@coopdivia bunch of *gm* haters? None of the Cadillac sedans look anything like this so not sure where you’re getting that from.
@@G-Rated After receiving $billions in subsidies from the Australian govt over the years, GM decided to pull the plug and end its GMH (General Motors Holden) manufacturing operations in 2017, putting thousands out of work. Holden had a proud tradition of car manufacture going back to 1948 (and before that as a wagon builder and coach-builder to other manufacturers), and was a beloved part of the Australian psyche as evidenced in the 'meat pies, football, kangaroos and Holden cars' advertising jingle - which ironically was based on a Chevrolet ad. Part of the reason for its demise in Aus was its range of model offerings didn't really cater to what the population was wanting, i.e. SUV-type vehicles, and when they did eventually climb onboard the band wagon it was too little, too late (plus the fact the cars they offered were pretty ordinary anyway). The last Holden-designed muscle car, the VF-SSV, was/is a classic of its type and was exported to the US in small numbers as the Chevrolet SS. It should have been a winner in the US but GM did nothing to promote it and even banned sales to Canada. Lucky owners who did manage to snag one can't believe how good the car is and what value for money it represented. Now do you see why the name of GM stinks in Australia?
@@coopdivi Right because you think a privately owned cooperation owes their brands something for helping to keep them in business this long? *gm* had more brands under them in 2017 than any other auto manufacturer. Yeah 5 series Long Wheel Base. Nothing new, china has many models like 5 series, e class, a6 and so on in bigger versions because the full size versions, 7, s class and so on get taxed to hell there. So most people who would buy these cars take the lwb version of the upper middle class offering.

Hey Matt, what was the video drop off rate when you mentioned the i5 is 74k pounds
As a current user of the G30 5 series, the real improvement I can see that this car has is only the new(er) infotainment system. My worst complaint on my car has always been the bad materials used for the soft touch and glossy plastic interior panels, leading to the panels getting heavily scratched. From the video, I can’t see any improvement in this regard. I’ll be keeping my G30 then 😅

I have the 2023 BMW 530e AWD PHEV. I really like the car, but the all-electric miles are only about 18. For my type of commute that still works (I’m retired), but if I’m driving any distance, I have to use the hybrid mode. As such, I really glad to hear that the new 5 Series will have a greatly increased all-electric range. When my lease is up I will definitely be trying out both the all electric i5 as well as the PHEV version. Thanks for the review.
Just curious how much does it cost to lease a 5 series in your country?
I loved the previous 5 but this new 5 looks definitely better than the EQE : some days I like EQE but sometimes only 😅

It has that X1 (newest) kind of design smirk in the front fascia. It’s pretty sharp and maintains the “pinch” shoulder line. It’s the 5 modernized.
Dunno but after seeing the 7 series, this feels better compared to it. The gray or matte color schemes help it alot. The base trims look bad but the M versions are all good. Just need time to grow upon you
14:05 It's only worth upgrading from 11kw to 22kw if you have 3 phase at your property or wherever you intend on doing most of your charging, otherwise not worth it. Because for the majority of people, even with the standard 11kw charging ability, they will only be able to charge at 7kw because most properties only have single phase electricity.
Besides having 3 phase, you also need to have a ton of current capacity. 11kW is 3x16A. 22kW is 3x32A. And then you need to have some left over for your house too. 3x40A is not normal to have at a single family home. More viable in apartment building garages with load balancing.
But, do you not look in your side mirrors when driving anyway? You would have to keep cancelling the lane change prompt.

Hi Matt, great video. I agree with you it looks better than the Mercedes. Yes that miles per kilowatt is low but as you said it will have been hammered. I do agree with you the handling is always going to be difficult to master due to the weight but most people don’t throw that sort of car round to the limit. It’s more the look and the potential performance it has. You didn’t say how much the like for like petrol equivalent was.
Agree. Its equals to greatness.
Battery size divided by miles/hwh isn't the correct way to calculate range. Calculating in this way ignores regen. If you're driving down a highway and never ever slowing down or stopping, yes it might be more accurate, but then the miles/kWh number would be lower in the first place. I'm surprised at this error.
It looks like Chris Bangle is back at BMW! No way the previous series is much nicer and more classic, a real BMW!👌🏼✔️

I think the car is stunning, except for that slab of black plastic where the grille would usually go. The front is gorgeous if you ignore the black plastic slab of a grille...will undoubtedly be removed with a mid-life revamp

The back of this bmw reminds me of that one Volkswagen yk that small long one I forgot its name.
The throttle house boys are gonna. Love this design 😂
Great video Mat, I have to agree about those indicator stalks, speaking as a former 5 Series owner they were always a thing of subtle beauty, never had that cheap sounding twang of poor spring dampening, that’s a bit of a driver focused miss on the part of bmw, which we normally hold with higher standards. I also think it’s a bit too expensive as it’s not riding aloft a bespoke EV platform which ever passenger will see clearly the moment the enter the back seats and encounter that massive transmission tunnel, surely that could have been a removable part in the chassis building process for the EV variants.
