2024 BMW 5 Series Review // Not What We Expected

2023 ж. 23 Қаз.
1 444 968 Рет қаралды

The 2024 BMW i5 M60 xDrive ($113,600 as specced in Canada, $92,450 in the US) is BMW’s first fully electric 5-Series sedan. Over 600 horsepower is on tap when using M Sport Boost mode and it has a predicted EPA range of 412 kilometers. With oodles of power and a sophisticated suspension system, the i5 aims to provide the familiar experience of speed and comfort that one might expect of a 5-Series sedan. But does it achieve its goals? And how different is it now that the drivetrain has been electrified? Thomas and James are excited to find out! We hope you enjoy the episode. And then subscribe, silly.

    • Agreed. They've been killing all of their line ups with the exception of the SUVs. The new 5 series isnt particularly ugly, but the m550i and F90 M5 are pretty much perfection.

    • The worst thing is the buttonless bandwagon BMW has joined. iDrive 8 is an abomination. The 8 shortcut buttons are gone. Climate control buttons are gone. Heated seats and ventilated seats are now have to be turned on / off in software. Manual turning on of low beam headlights and PARKING LIGHTS are in iDrive. Was the turn-style headlight switch too complicated, for BMW? Even the HEATED STEERING WHEEL BUTTON is gone. No one can dispute that having to navigate a software menu to do simple tasks is easier and safer than a switch you can locate and turn on, without looking, by memory. The fact the common sense has been lost around this is totally mind boggling.

    • Ditto. Their new stuff is aimed at someone other than me, which I find weird having been such a keen BMW customer over the years - I’ve bought tons of them; mostly new, from E46 to Z8 by way of many 5s, 7s and Ms. Couldn’t be bothered with them any more, though I have a couple of 80s and 90s keepers to remind me how fun they used to be.

There are tons of unsold EVs sitting in car lots. Supply has far exceeded demand. And that's a fact. There's nothing wrong with having EVs or people that prefer EVs. And the cheapening of interior fit and finish combined with the chaotic layout of the interior is a no go at that price point. If i'm paying 100K for a car I have to have that "look back at it feeling everytime I get out of it". BMW offered up a rough draft in my personal opinion on this car.

  • There are certain design canons - in a world of any sports sedan family - but especially - for the 5series. Traditions which BMW has been true to - for close to 5 decades, since the E12 (with some exceptions for E60). The front wheel arch to hood distance is small (or at least made to look small). The front overhang is small (or - again - at least made to look small). The front and rear lights are connected with a pronounced, stretched (and I know it sounds idiotic, but still) - muscular - there I said it - line which goes through the centre of door handles (except for the E60). In my car - the F11 - they even adapted the emergency hood pop-up system (essentially an airbag for pedestrians) - in order to make all these canons and traditions work (and it's the third ever most good-looking 5 series imho - after E28 and E34.. and maybe E39 - and btw all these cars adhered to all of the above - and then some - traditional BMW design features). This generation - the G60 - which, coincidentally, was announced one day after my birthday (namely, May 24) - simply spits on all of those traditions - and says - yo, China? BMW's biggest market? Yes, thank you very much - I. WILL. HAVE. China written all over me - and f__ck any canons, traditions, design heritage - or whatever anyone might call any of that - so screw the brand fans which have been true to BMW design for decades. Also - mr. Zipse, the current CEO of BMW - has said that "all modern cars need to be ugly" - no they don't - and no, crazy gadgets which have no place in a car will not replace classy, brilliant design - which BMW has known how to make - for many, many decades. And if the Chinese market is so important that BMW makes this generation of 5series (their mega-seller) - just for China - inside and out - I wonder which cars got Chinese people (known to copy basically all design from the West) - hung on BMW - in the first place. Wasn't it the beautiful E39? The F10/F11? I don't think China wants Chinese design. I think it wants clean, spectacular western design - not a copy of Chinese design - which itself is a copy of... jeezus. This is just bad design. Also - the front looks like a Merc A-class - whereas the rear looks like an E-class. WHY? Also - was the F10 the last generation in which you could switch driving modes, ESC, fog lights, climate controls and stereo (even the "control" screen off) - WITHOUT taking eyes off the road? Have we gone so far beyond all that that we now need all the (complicated, heavy and costly) driver aids? Sorry BMW. You can do better - especially after the massive backlash and lost sales (look at F10 after E60!) - the problem is, you've apparently stopped listening to backlash. Either way - thanks to the Canadian (wait, what?) guys for yet another great video, greetings from Latvia.

    @JurisKankalis@JurisKankalis6 ай бұрын
    • Absolutely agree. In my opinion, this whole approach isn't even a smart financial move. Sure they might sell in China today, but what about the future? If they continue copying chinese design, won't the chinese design be the original then? Why buy a german copy of a chinese car when you can have the original, which is probably better in terms of durability anyway. This whole thing stinks, it's cheap. And very stupid in my opinion. You don't change yourself and your core values for someone who liked you for who you were in the first place. BMW will sooner or later lose the respect they earned decades ago if they continue like this, not just from fans.

      @xAandreyYx@xAandreyYx6 ай бұрын
    • I just hope these design changes don't trickle down to other companies once it becomes cheaper to do so. It's almost like they want cars to suck for a while so that everyone buys into the next car generation (EV's, self driving, etc) to 'fix' everything.

  • Yayyy a really expensive not as snug as a 3 series larger looking base car interior feeling vehicle that’s going the way of more device than automobile. Just what I needed 👍

  • In James's defense, if it was the TikTok bassist rendition of Hoist The Colors, that's unironically a fantastic way to test the dynamic range of a car sound system lol

  • I drive a 2011 BMW 328i xDrive Wagon, 6 speed manual. Bought it brand new, fully loaded.. sticker price of around $50,000. It makes me think how much better BMW was as a brand 15 years ago ever time I drive it! Those were the days when every car they sold looked good and drove well, atleast in my eye. I don’t wanna get rid of it, but at some point I’m gonna have to - I don’t know what I’m gonna buy! I hate the new screens and exterior designs on these BMWs, I’m thinking to moving to Porsche exclusively… which is a shame because I have always been a BMW fan, but those screens/designs are deal breakers.

    • @@ifeanyiikemefuna3706 I test drove the X5 and M340i.. was very disappointed! Of course the straight line performance was excellent, but the build quality and steering feel were inferior to my E91

    • Even Porsche is going all screen sadly. They’re ditching the mechanical tach for an all-screen cluster.

    • @@faheemabbas3965 Well they’re keeping the physical buttons, and their screens are nicely integrated. Not buying a new BMW ever again, I’ll stick to Porsche. Not to mention BMWs are becoming overbuilt soccer mom cars, I rarely see anybody else driving them.
