Elephants Try Saving Stuck Rhino from Hungry Lions

Hours of chaos erupted when a rhino got stuck in a waterhole near a pride of lions. A passing herd of elephants was alerted to the scene, giving the rhino a lifeline, and making for one of the craziest wildlife interactions that Latest Sightings has ever shared.
Send in your wildlife video here, and earn money: latestsightings.com/film-earn
Kim Hathway, a consultant broker for Discovery, saw the entire scene play out in Etosha National Park.
Kim and her friends were the only people at the Aus waterhole on the day, having no luck with their sightings, they were just about to move on to their next location. Then, out of nothing but luck, a lioness stuck her head over the hill.
The pride of lions made their way toward the waterhole, filling the atmosphere with excitement. Kim had a feeling that they were ready for action.
A few minutes on, a large black rhino came galloping over the very same hill. Exhausted by the Namibian heat, it headed straight for the little that remained in the waterhole. It instantly plonked itself down, trying to cool off in the muddied water.
Kim couldn’t believe her luck. At the time the rhino couldn’t seem to care about the nearby predators, it was too set on getting a drink, but the lions were certainly aware of it.
The pride inched their way closer and closer, but the rhino didn’t let out much of a reaction. It was almost as if it couldn’t…
This is when Kim realized that something was wrong. The waterhole was quite deep and with the thick mud at the bottom, the rhino was simply stuck and became a sitting duck for the hungry pride of lions.
The lions eventually realized what was happening too and decided to make the most of their luck. Although they knew it was stuck, they were still fully aware of how dangerous a rhino can be. They approached with caution and used hunting tactics to try and finish the job.
Sadly, there wasn’t much that the immobile rhino could do, but all the commotion created by the lions amazingly gave the helpless rhino a lifeline! A passing herd of elephants saw what was happening and acted immediately. They charged at the pride as a unit, and the lions were forced to back off.
With the threat out of sight, most of the herd continued on their way, but one elephant wasn’t happy to leave the rhino at the mercy of the lions. It desperately tried to get the rhino out of the waterhole. Using its tusks and foot, it pushed and pushed, without any luck. At one point the ellie even looked like it was on top of the poor rhino.
This lasted for hours and it unfortunately came to the point where the elephant could simply do no more. It had to move on, even knowing that the lions were still around.
It didn’t take long for the pride to swing back into action. The elephant herd was still around, and they chased them off a few more times, but the ellies soon realized that the case was hopeless and that there was nothing they could do. Leaving the rhino all alone once more.
The lions came back in and eventually managed to flip the rhino on its back, leading to its inevitable drowning. The rhino’s fight was over, and the predators came out as the victors in this unbelievable wildlife story.

    • I mean if it was 1, I could maybe see the lions trying to do something....but the fact there was like a dozen of them, they definitely pissed right off. But yeah in a fight they have tusks to gore with, a trunk to bonk with and just sheer mass and strength to do whatever the hell they want with. I'd fear them too if I was another species of animal.

    • It depends on what lens you look at it from. Sure the Elephant is the most powerful animal, similar to tigers in India - where Lions also reside in certain areas - but the symbolism of the Male Lion’s purpose in nature is to do nothing but fight for his legacy. When Bull Elephants and Male Tigers come of age - they leave their respective families, and largely live lives of solitude. Kings of their own domains. When Male Lions come of age, they’re forced to leave their families but the have this drive to create one or conquer one - and lead it. Legacy. Kings of their own dynasty. A dynasty that functions as one of the strongest groups in the domain. That’s why people have always seen the Lion as the king of the jungle - because we’re social animals just like them. Never been the strongest animal individually but as a group we can conquer anything - and for much of history we’ve had strong males lead the way. Humans and lions share that in common.

  • The elephant at first charged at the lions , drove them away and then tried to help the Rhino get out of the pit. This shows that these animals have empathy and understanding too. The rituals they perform on the skeletal remains of their dead one also indicates that they are very intelligent animals.

Nature, with all its beauty and cruelty, never fails to remind us of the interconnectedness of life. The way these elephants rallied around their fellow beings, be it their young ones or a struggling rhino, reflects a level of empathy that resonates with the best of human qualities. Let's strive to protect and preserve these magnificent creatures and learn from their lessons in kindness and solidarity. 🐘💚 #NatureTeachesCompassion

    • Nature teaches compassion? What? That is a good way to lead someone to their death. Nature is brutal because it is complexity happening at every moment. It's fine to humanize an instance and call it sweet, but there is a reason the human species developed tools, defenses, societies, and amenities. Nature is literally brutal, raw existence and it doesn't teach kindness. It hardens dwellers and they either survive by becoming intelligent to nature's brutality or they become a tiny speck of darwinism that happened in the great procession of existence marching on. Let's not confuse people and make them think Nature is just waiting for them with a big warm hug. Nature is not kind. Nature is Nature.

I saw a male lion, rhino and elephant there at the same time. The elephants wouldn't let any of the other animals drink while they were there and actively chased them away. When the last elephant left the rhino came in and the solitary male lion. It was something to behold. Nothing as dramatic as the video but still very special. Nature is mental 👌

  • The respect that they all have is amazing. The lions did not attack the Elephant. They patiently waited for the Elephant to confirm the dinner plans. The Elephant tried to help the Rhino and even gave it a pep talk. The Elephant told the Rhino to get your behind out of there. “Here I’m splashing the water out making it easy, get your big rear end out”. “ come on you’re safe and my family is with me”. “I can’t lift you anymore but you can make it out”. Then the Rhino said “ thank you for everything my friend but I’m just to weak and sick to come out.” “ I appreciate everything but I just can’t due to my injuries, please tell my family if you see them”. Then the Elephant respected the wishes of the Rhino and confirmed the dinner plans with the pride. The pride of lions respectfully waited for the Elephant to go about it ways as they had their dinner and had many more members of their family to join. Everyone had mutual respect for each other.

It shows cognitive thought, problem solving behavior, and an unquestionable thinking process. I don't think we can make a universal assumption that brain size, whether small or large, has a direct correlation to intelligence, but the large sizes of elephants brains, I am sure add a lot too their thinking capacity. This only further saddens me, when I think how thinking, feeling, emotional creatures are treated horribly and inhumane at times.

  • It seems like elephants are very compassionate animals and I sure wish it was able to help the rhino. Sad to watch! Couldn't help but wonder why the person doing video wasn't able to tie a rope around the rhino leg and have elephant drag it out?? Was that a cement water pit for catching or holding water for animals to drink from? Thank you for sharing.

  • My goodness, elephants show more humanism than humans themselves. ";-)

  • Elephants are absolutely amazing with their intelligence and emotions like humans. Such fantastic footage...even with the unfortunate ending for the Rhino. They're all just trying to survive day by day like us all. 🥺

    • This looks like a concrete, man-made watering hole. That poor rhino probably couldn’t get out as the sides were too steep and the bottom muddy. A natural water hole would have gently sloping sides. Totally irresponsible of the owner to create a death trap for endangered animals, just for humans to photograph. Heart breaking.

    • @@M1nn0w You're probably right, it's a shame. Trophy hunters can be involved as well. 😔
