Woodturning - Giant Oak Burl to Worms Lookalike Figured Bowl

Woodturning a giant oak burl / burr into stunning looking wooden bowl. I wanted to keep the natural formations untouched so not resin was involved as this wood had some much to showcase without any substances. Not long after turning this blank on the lathe it started to reveal some fantastic grains and figuring, what looked like worms’ formation but obviously this is just nature being incredible. Finished with mineral oil to bring out all the beauty and colours.

  • That wood is amazing! I would be terrified to own that bowl. It looks like the first time someone drops it it's going to shatter! 😢

  • That wood is very interesting. I saw that curly stuff in a photo online. It was a photo of a tree that burned. The outside bark had kind of protected the inside of the tree from burning but it curled up the fibers inside like the wood in the bowl you made. Makes an awesome look :))

  • As soon as you varnished the wooden bowl I thought wow what an amazing effect in the wood - wiggly worms - lovely natural effect, never seen anything like it! Just wondering when you turn a lumpy burl like that does it feel like you're trying to hold onto a pneumatic drill - the vibrations through your wrist must be painful sometimes? 👍👀🪱🔨

    • Thank you so much 🙂 Yes, you definitely want to go slow, holding the chisel with a very steady and firm hand and taking small passes. You cannot rush turning a big and unbalanced piece :)
