problem is the dealerships say nothing but "its normal" when you want to get the work done under warranty.
They won’t do that to me if it ever happens. I’ll get corporate on phone if needed
@@metallicaguy123 Yea, good luck with that.
That's why there is a car commission in most states that will SUE for you. I had to do this in Louisiana. The owner of the car dealership and the salesman had to go to Baton Rouge Louisiana from Shreveport or Mansfield which was about a 4 hour drive for them. I didn't have to go to court as a person who came from there inspected my car a few times and represented me in court. They either had to fix the car or give me something of equal value of what I paid for the car.

I like his energy, plus good advise
Idk after driving GDI for ages, im almost immune to engine noise that isnt the rattle of a timing chain 😅
I watched it multiple times just to make sure thats a lifter, turns out to be a rocker arm. Honest mistake, but great advice. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching this is my explanation kzhead.info6w_0e-5SZnw?si=oXWW5KDwtlxiBVPQ
Ive been drivong with bad lifters for 5 months. One mechanic told me dont worry about it until engine light is on or if it gets louder. The other mechanic told me best to change it right away.
I love your narration, the way you talk is divine for instructional videos, or any type of video, I see a bright future for you in KZhead!
Wow, thank you! Thank you so much! 🙂
On those penta stars, by the time you hear it, you need a set of followers and a cam.
Love your show Alex. Keep it coming 👍
Will do buddy thanks for watching
Thus is why I love an Ole chevy..if you hear a tick you just a little low on oil and keep on going
I love my f300 engine, oil is optional.
Be careful driving it hard with mess up lifters I end up damaging camshaft, rockers of my 2012 charger RT cost labor/parts is around $8,000
Holy smokes, that's an expensive repair. I'm making a lot better money than just a couple years ago but an $8k repair would hit me hard.
@MarlooTV Ditto on my RAM 1500 ST
You could get a used 5.7 Hemi for cheaper than that
What the hell? That's a new car
I have a lifter tick on my 92 Lincoln town car☹️ but I’m in one of those situations where I gotta drive it to be able to have the money to fix it 😂 Update: wasn’t lifters, definitely was timing chain and tensioners, got em replaced, tick is gone. Very common in town cars at around 150k. Now my transmission is taking a shit on me lol, time to get a rebuild or a new tranny
The fact that the 92 Lincoln is still driving around is cool!
@@AlexTheCarDoctor it has 150k on it, the Town Cars can last forever if you take care of them that’s why the Taxi and Limo services love them. How do you feel about Sea Foam and those other preventive maintenance type of additives?
@@AlexTheCarDoctor update: it’s most likely my timing chain tensioners. Not lifters. With 150k it’s about time for a new chain/ new tensioners. Me and my grandpa, who’s been a mechanic for about 40 years, took a listen to it.
@@MrMicahMane sea foam doesn’t work on 4 strokes only 2 strokes. 2 strokes lubricate with the gas. That’s why it’s ‘sea’ foam, 2 stroke boat motors…. To actually clean the inside of an engine u need those walnut sprayers & to take your engine apart. There’s specific stuff for your gas tank. Sea foam won’t hurt obv.& there’s oil shit too. Doesn’t hurt, just don’t expect it to REALLY clean anything. Can help, but in reality it’s sorta a waste
@@user-bq1fp8xo6myeah I was gonna agree with you, I can’t tell you how many times when I worked at autozone people would buy sea foam for their cars that were missing and then it would do almost nothing and they would be surprised even after I tried to explain to them what it’s for. And yeah as far as cleaning a engine goes you’re gonna have to take it apart and use something. I feel like the oil additives to clean the engine from running it only really help when you have a ton of sludge in the motor
I love it when people say it just started overheating or my brakes just started making noise yesterday
Hey brother hope your doing well, iv got a raptor with a 6.2 and have my ear out for thay tick. Sheesh id love to give you my bussiness you have a great professional approachable attitude. People need to treat GOOD RESEARCHED mechanics like good trusted doctor's and let them take the reigns.
Had a fuel line crack in my dad’s xd wagon. It was a bush basher and it set fire to 200+ acres. Took about a week for all the old stumps and logs to burn out. Good times.
Whoops! 🤣 Lmfao
The 3.6 or the Hemi? I know alot of 3.6s that tick forever lol. The Hemi always needs cam and lifters.
That's the 3.6 It's a junk design asking with the 5.7 hemi, 5.3 and 6.2 Chevy
3.6 has more cam issues than the hemi lol!
Wdym? The 5.7 ticks at high mileage but its harmless
My srt4 Caliber ticks like a mf

Hello Alex is there any tapping noise on cold starts that would be considered normal, or does it all have to be addressed

Hey Alex, do you know if Warranty typically covers something like this if I get it serviced the moment I hear the ticking? I have a platinum bumper to bumper all mechanical and electoral coverage so basically anything besides maintenance. And also… does this tick come from a lack of maintenance?
Love your video's.
Thanks so much for your support!
Nost vehicles you can just drive em until they fall apart because either way they are getting a big bill
TRUE! I once had a traverse come in with a destroyed engine. They had an extended insurance policy....they had me teardown the motor....the bearings were black! They heard noise and kept driving....maybe because they wanted a motor. The policy denied their claim! They had to pay straight out of pocket
The way he says "please stop driving it" just cracks me the F up 😂
I have a 2014 Hemi challenger. Could you recommend a camshaft and lifter kit that you use or recommend?
Excellent advice!🧐
Thanks for watching!
Thank you Alex. I’ve been driving this 2018 Kia optima and this lifter ticking is bad. Only 112,000 miles. Started 105,000 ! SMH
I've had 7 S10s, 4 of which were the workhorse 4.3s. My current 4.3 is. Billet crank stroker 4.8. They ALLLL have super loud top ends with the hydraulic rollers, even my current one with comp EVERYTHING. Bone stock 4.3/ 13k built "4.3"= both loud top ends. I've also had 2 camrys- a 95 new to 365k, and a 2002 about 65k to 250k BOTH camry ticked, both were 100% fine when I sold them. I'm ASE, a Mastsr Mack/Volvo, I have hino and cummins certs, I'm 109EPA, I'm a FMCSA +NCDOT inspector and have been drag racing over 20 years. This is good GENERAL INFO. But not 100% "ALL there is too it". Very vague. But I get your drift.
Upgrading cam does make it sound better and more performance
You are awesome
What is the expected mileage of the new lifters??
Bring it in every 10k miles for an inspection or every 5k to get the oil changed. An expert like Alex would be able to catch it early! More likely to save it from catastrophic damage long term!
You need to make more videos Man😮
The infamous Pentastar V6 rocker follower needle bearing failure. I've done both sides of the jeep and when I took one of the rockers apart, the wear was on the shaft that the roller and needle bearings roll on. Weird that some were perfect, but a couple on each head were worn. Replace them all!!
You sound like fix it Felix from wreck it Ralph
One big question , lifter tick started , instantly stood diving. My mechanic started take off manifold and heads , one piston is not as tight a bit of play , is the bottom end done or with a new cam and lifters can help ? Jsut don’t want to get a different engine
How long until a problem arises? Mine's been ticking for about 3 years now.
More then likely not a lifter prob exhaust leak broken manifold bolts
It can be ticking for years hahaha I had a friend that had one for close to a decade. Sometimes it doesn't effect much sometimes it destroys everything.
Where are you located seem like a legit mechanic bro🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I’m in the Atlanta area
How long is long ?I have been driving with the tick for 200 miles
Good advise
What is the fix for the engine with lifter and cam problem... That's been driven
I remember when I got my 2002 m3 and the head was ticking from a misadjusted valve and instead of redoing the valve adjustment I just drove and and then I had to buy a new head because of of the springs came off the valve. S54s are so damn expensive I learned after that and that was doing the work myself😭
Oh, wow yikes! Good lesson learned but feels like it didn't have to be learned as the car was clearly talking to you. BMW is very communicative.
We put a brand new 5.7 in our jeep and it has had a tick when cold since the day it rolled out of the shop. Shop owner said thats normal for those motors
Definitely just don’t beat on it or don’t beat on it so often. Maintain make sure it’s well oiled if you plan to keep your vehicle stretch it out a bit then get it repaired. New lifters or whatever is ticking get it repaired/ replaced cause if you leave it like that for too long luckily I lucked out lol It’ll wear down so much it’ll cause big engine damage
Wow! Didn't know. What if it's not a tick, but very slight, like one would think you need to do valve adjustments, is that correct? Also, how much life should you get out of the lifters and are lifters used only in the hydraulic application; so if you have adjustment ability in the engine, you don't have lifters?
That's a big thing customers don't much understand. "Why is it more for mine to replace than it was for my buddies"... well, because your buddy STOPPED driving. Brought the car in without rust damage mismatched bolts etc and got it looked at and fixed. You on the other hand drove it for an extra 4 months until more much noticeable sounds were heard, rust and liability bolts etc and more parts needing to be accessed and replaced.... 🙄 Great vid!
😂🤣😂 RIGHT! 🤦🏽♂️
I'm driving a 1998 Ford e350. It's ticking alright. How much ? Been adding seafoam to oil and eliminated some of it.
This is where I stop drinking my traverse this things knocking hard
Dam..savage mode Doc
The second costumer is probably gonna get charged like he mess up the camshaft 😅
I’ve been driving with a ticking for 2+ years 🤣 hoping it’s a fuel pump lol
😫🫣
I found it. It’s the ticket over there
@@AlexTheCarDoctor was also due a timing chain 10,000 miles ago 🤣
Piston slap is a trait of my engine would be worried if it didn’t sound like a diesel when cold
Are those solid lifters or hydraulic lifters? Because if it’s lifter is hydraulic you can pump them back up doing a few things.
according to the dodge dealership when my 2011 dodge ram 5.7l hemi got that same tick tick tick they said it was absolutely normal they call it the hemi tick when i had my mechanic friend repair it the cam lobe was all warn down after cam and lifter replace engine is quite and smooth like butter
How much u charge for both exhaust manifold on a hemi?
Agreed but some people just can’t afford it
I would get a hold of tx speed get a stage 2 camshaft, new springs with hellcat lifters do a MDS delete and a small tune...truck/Durango/charger will run forever...not to mention 50 horse and torque...
hear this guy! i read everywhere that the tick is hydraulic lifter, i even topped up ceratec, and yesterday the car broke down, now I have to change the engine :''(
How much is it to get fix?
I recently replaced my cam and lifters on a 5.7 hemi, Also the mds solenoids and the car misfires when trying to activate the MDS would you have any idea why ? ( Car runs perfect when MDs is turned off)
I still redline it every day
Are the most common causes for a tick usually the rocker arm/lifters? I
Depends upon the vehicle. The four cylinder that came in the Mazda mx6, 626, and ford probe have Rhodes lifters and that tick is basically meaningless. Trying to fix it is both expensive and likely futile.
Lol, I had an 01 Malibu that had a lifter knock the whole time I had it, not a tap..it was a top end knock...but, I maintained it, had it like 2 years, andthe only actual problem I had, was the typical 2000s chevy anti theft system issue once in a while
The barber 360 jeezy voice😂
What causes the cam to get chewed up like that?
What does it mean when you a low tick noise when you give the car more gas or accelerate faster? When driving at normal speeds you don’t hear it it’s only when you accelerate or go up an incline you’ll hear that ticking noise then it goes away when on level or up to speed driving. Car doesn’t shake or misfire rides normally
Bmw e90s with the n52 engine will have that lifter tick happen after a certain amount of kms but it's nothing detrimental
i have a rattling noise, and the point is no one could identify it so far , so what shall i do but continue to drive? one workshop said engine damage, the other says not. If it comes to engine problems "trennt sich die spreu vom weizen"/ seperating chaff from the wheat/ meaning you have to work a lot til you find a good workshop who are capable of sound engine diagnostics
They make so many damn noises who knows what’s happening. Just read all the lifter cam replacements and still have noise. I just did my lifter cam have the same noise but now it sounds like it’s coming directly from alternator and it’s where I hear it the loudest it with the ears on.
I've heard cars go years with a ticking lifter. It sounds bad but usually won't hurt anything as long as oil is kept up with. Worst thing happens put a cam kit in it. Changing one lifter as a pro mechanic assures a comeback because others may soon join it. Unhappy customer. Also many people have to live with it because they don't have 2 or more cars to have one down for days or weeks.
After you replace your rockers with a new camshaft how does one Flash the engine of the little Metal particles? I would assume do a couple oil changes...
Oil Changes!
I moved the belt manually like 2 inches while the car is off and now I hear a ticking noise. Would that be the cause? Car is 2013 cadillac ats 2.0t
Bro clearly never heard a 2.0TFSi on a cold winters morning 🥶
Is it not the same job ? If the cam is damaged I would hope you would replace it anyways and the lifter the same right ? How would you fix that failure any other way ?
I think he was just saying each camshaft runs about 400. And he doesn't sell them for what he pays for em. You could damage all 4 of them and rack up another 2k in parts. And you can ruin your entire engine if neglected too long.
I took in a 04 Chevy Suburban with the Same Problem. Mechanics took care of the Noise alright Even Took Care Of the Timing Chain and Oil pump and the Syphoning filter oil Line. Never mentioned the Cam at all and I have the proof on the paperwork but wait, he Mentioned after the work is done, that he will Guarantee his work for One Year and ONLY If, are you still wtih me?.... If we take it to his Shop to get The oil changes regular Maintnance during that 1 Year Grace Period Mind you He NEVER EVER MENTIONED THE FRIGGIN CAMSHAFT OF THE TRUCK In the First Place. Please Be CAREFUL PEOPLE.
Id like to ask you for how much did you fix that '15 durango and how much does it cost with and without the cam
Anywhere from $1500 to $5000 maybe more, depends on how much damage to lifters, pushrods, cam (if thays what was causing it), maybe more .
Way more expensive = $4000 Way cheaper = $2000
Would it throw a warning on your dash??
What’s the price difference?
I have 1999 dodge ram 5.2 liter v8 it has liter noise between 40 and 50 miles per hour while drive whst should u do with thst

@@AlexTheCarDoctor isn't that the truth!

That's super common on those engines though
Yep 💯 got two in the shop now!
On jeep 4.0 I’m pretty sure lifter noise is almost normal
You can’t compare one of the world greatest engines to this new stuff
If you here some ticking and pull over right away and not drive it. Maybe cuz low on oil. Once we do oil change can that fix the ticking? Or it automatically means something is bad? In all cases?
I would definitely try changing the oil first, not all the time damage occurs especially when you pull over and stop driving
@@AlexTheCarDoctorwhat’s up bro. I did the oil change on my 1980 caprice the loud ticking went away. But I can kind of hear it at times. Also it burns oil now.. car runs and drives but burns oil now and low ticking . Louder on high rpms. Engine rebuild? Or lifter?
Normal on those pentascrap engines! I've been a chrysler tech for years! Doing this exact job all week long!
At least as a Chrysler tech you'll never have to worry about running out of work LOL.
@TheHamburgler123 even if I'm not at chrysler anymore. I'm still doing those jobs. Tonight, another great ticking pentascrap to do!
Omg I have bad lifters since a months ago and I’m still driving, I don’t have nobody to change it for me.
Miatas just chilling bc lifters tick never goes away
My Mazda trucks had solid lifters so I know what your talking about 😂
Is this the same with a pushrod and a DOHC engine? Because I’ve heard a lot of pushrod engines have tick when they warm up? Thanks for any info! :@_@:
No not the same pushrod engines abbreviated OV for overhead valve and DOHC stands for dual overhead cam, the difference is the cam is at the top of the cylinder head and on overhead valve engines/pushrod engines are inside the block at the bottom
