In the old days, we used very long screwdrivers with wooden handles. We took the metal end and placed it in various places on the engine and put our ear to the wooden handle side. Based on where we heard the worst noise is where we started our looking. Today, you have all of these wonderful tools to help troubleshoot your engines. It's fascinating to watch you guys do it differently!
My dad still does this haha, he calls it the poor man's stethoscope. I used it to diagnose an alternator bearing that was going out
That is an amazing tip for someone on a budget like me!
I’ve been doing this since my dad showed me when I was younger!
maybe take a piezo sensor and glue it to screwdriver then connect to oscilloscope.this is a cheap way to isolate belt/pully noises to isolate but i bet could work for this,i also took mechanic stethescope and removed the metal rod and added screwdriver to dull the sound this may also help isolate if its top end/bottom end, just some ideas
This works with screwdrivers that have plastic handles as well, at least for checking fuel injectors :)

heres a old hot rodder trick: take the plug wires off each cylinder at a time. if it stops knocking, its probably a rod knock, and its on THAT cylinder.
So you just don't allow it to fire and then it won't knock?
Take the plug out, and you wony have any compression, so the rod won't have anything to push it back and make it hit the cylinder wall. In theory.
@@Tom_KTM I think if you just yank the plug wire and it stops knocking it's your ignition timing being too advanced, but I don't get why that would be only on one cylinder. I suppose if there isn't any spark then the piston wouldn't slam back down from the combustion onto the crank though, so that might make sense. I'd think it would still slop around in there but I guess the decrease in forces might make it knock less
@@christopheringram4118 not taking the plug out, just disconnect the wires going to them
@@Tom_KTM taking away the fire extinguishes the pressure by taking away the expansion cycle for the affected cylinder. It isn’t a fix but it is a patch. Basically the down journal just becomes a driven cylinder. It is what happens when you hear of drag racers “being down a cylinder” or disconnecting wires to run in displacement restricted classes.

I took the head off to find a large amount of large chunks of metal; aluminum from the block, and iron from the rod that blew up. It’s a push pin rod, so it’s not supposed to come apart, but you wouldn’t know if you saw it because the lower half was broken off

Bro as a fellow car guy I just cried with you looking at that man. I imagine by the time of this video that you already solved your problem but I hope it was solved! Love your vids by the way, you got yourself a new sub!
Been there, done that, swapped the engine. First car, a 61 Dodge Lancer. I worked on it for free to help out the lady who owned it when I was 15 & 16. She ran it out of oil and the engine seized. She got a ride home took out the title and gave it to me as thanks for keeping it running as long as it did. I went to it, threw in 3 quarts of oil and drove it home. The bearings were toast. I put in new bearings from the bottom but the crank was flat spotted. Drove it with a quart of motorhoney in it for a few months then my Uncle and I swapped the 170CI for a junk yard 225 CI truck engine. Cheaper than rebuilding the original engine. Didn't quite fit so I lost the heater. Drove it for 3 to 4 years and sold it for $500 in 73. I kind of wish I could find one now for nostalgia. That car taught me so much about wrenching. Late in life became an aircraft mechanic.
I love how approachable Zach makes all of this stuff. "Yeah, it's just car parts... let's rebuild an engine."

Who wouldn’t want to get paid for working on their project car? Seems like a car dude’s dream.
im a mechanic, and id just like to say that there are quite a few ways to distinguish between engine noises without tearing the engine apart. Piston slap generally is a lot more noticeable when the engines cold and will heavily diminish or even disappear when the engine warms up. Rod knock will vary in frequency with RPM and will get a lot quieter if you disable the affected cylinder(unplug the injector or coil for that cylinder). Main bearing knock will be a lot worse under load and wont vary as much with RPM, it also will probably get worse if you disable the cylinder closest to the bad bearing, and sounds a lot deeper than rod knock. Lifter tick is generally pretty easy to tell that its coming from the top of the engine.
Have you ever what worn wrist pins sound like?
Thanks Brian! After researching my own Toyota with nasty sounds, I can add VVTI clacking which usually oges away after a few seconds (once oil prssure is up) and on some cars, a leaked timing tensioner part that allows the tensioner pulley to slap back down on it. all audible from the FRONT of the engine with a stethoscope/screwdriver-o-scope.
in need of some advice. i got engine knock the other day but it went away ( im new to cars so i didnt think much of it) few days later im driving down the free way and it comes back. and i decided to drive it home. once i did. it stopped again comepletely. im confused becasue people tell me engine knocking shouldnt stop. i know im behind on m y spark plug change. so im hoiping that fixes it but to change the sparks i gotta wait until a mechanic is available because you gotta raise the engine to get to the sparks. i just want to know if my car is safe to drive even tho i dont ahve that knocking noise. i feel it comes when i hit high RPMS

My first car was a subaru that died of rod knock and now everytime my 8th gen Si's valve train gets a little noisy I experience horrific ptsd. I have taken it in to be looked over two separate times thinking it had a knock.
If a honda has a knock, 9/10 its because of western oil. it causes valve knock. put in the proper eastern oil it was designed with, and the knock will go away. and, yes this really is a thing.
I would have preferred to hear some rod knock rather than what I actually got. I was around 4000RPM making it through a yellow light in my ‘01 Tacoma V6 Double Cab Prerunner about a month ago, and I heard one of my rods decided to rip in half. No prior knock, no warning, only had 133,000 miles on it, never been dry or without good oil. Best I could tell is the crankshaft bearing failed for some reason and the rest is history. I sold it to one of the mechanics at the shop I towed it to after getting a $6,000 used replacement or $9000 remanufactured and deciding to move on. Doesn’t matter how many people tell me that “never happens”, it did to me on a truck I only put around 4000 miles a year on 🤷♂️. Loving the show and learning a lot. Keep up the good work.
Did an excellent job at explaining what causes knocking sounds. Thank you
I'm a mechanic and my final response would be. "I am not going to make anything on this repair, but my overlords are really hoping you approve this repair so they can steal that door rate to fund their next dealership purchase while I starve and have to buy more specialty tools on my dime"
Donut.... the only channel in which I care to actually watch the sponsorship ads
