If the truck axle housing loader differential breaks, the repair process is difficult
#truck #axle #housing #loader #differential #breaks #repair #process #difficult
Many years ago, I worked on railway track equipment in the middle of the Australian remote railway tracks where there were no towns supplies etc for hundreds of miles. When something broke we had to improvise, cannibalize and modify using whatever was on hand. This was usually base plates, fish plates and even dog spikes laying along the track. As long as we had an oxy set and a welder we fixed most things. Even bits of abandoned cars came in handy including a windscreen wiper motor that was stripped and the wiring used to repair a burnt-out solenoid. So good on these lads for what they can do.
Same here I worked in the oilfield need I say more.
I am 82 years old and have seen many such repairs done on all kinds of equipment, in WW2 there were no spare parts for civilian use so everything was repaired and used for many years, I have repaired log skidders that most today would throw away and replace with new parts regardless of the cost, have even re-arched springs and ran them for along time
risking your life for some rusty old iron is not worth it. spend a little and change for new spare parts... that's what they exist for!

That's some nice stick welding but the prep is all wrong, if you don't prep the area to be welded the bead is nothing more than a lump of slang.
Dude didnt even hit it with the wire brush. That would have been at least SOME prep
Absolutely 💯 agree with you. Apparently something there works for them 😂
Prep is only a part of the problem here. Imagine the look on a DOT inspectors face if he looks under a truck and sees all that. Proper prep and weld penetration or not the plate they welded on does nothing to help the integrity of the housing. Then figure its going back on a huge overloaded un-inspected truck.
How many mistakes.....they even for the begening did not clean oil...😂completly WRONG

As a retired welding inspector I watch these guys whenever I am in the mood for a horror show. They seem to get away with it though.
We never ever see the life expectancy of these, usually dodged, repairs. I have watched many youtube video's of half shafts being repaired with only some 60% of the diameter being welded and no pre heat or post weld stress relief.
@@PeterChapman-rg6gr third world country. You expect first world standards. Most of these guys make $8-20 USD a day
Third world, they're doing their best with nothing but I'll bet that repair fails in pretty short order.
I am usually a fan of their fixes. Not this one.
Please clean the metal before you weld.
Cleaning up with a grinder is good for a better weld but v out that thin diff housing and you can be burning through which will not make a good weld. Using the correct amperage will give a full penetration in that thin Axel pressing.
Clean?🤡🤡🤡😂, why don’t they use 1/2 “ rebar to fill in gaps, wonder what the voltage and amps are! Anyway if it’s clean you want, better go to a different place in the world

Good job! Hopefully this repaired axle will run next 5 miles without any problems.
specially with the plates will go forever.
This repair is excellent. The original was obviously inadequate and not strong enough. That doubling plate or strap will make this Axel last even overloaded. I love this sort of work and love the people involved.. God bless them. I am from the UK.
@@swarfs Here in europe nowadays you can see these guys from stoneage aka "super high skilled professionals" all over the place. I love their shining eyes when they saw first time in their life tables, chairs and even toilet bowles.
@@horstmuller7512 I can see you are a critisiser just to look clever. It betrays a profound ignorance. When necessity strikes you probably yield to defeat. These men are made of stronger metal and repair with invocation skill and cheerfulness. Qualities you obviously lack..

Well done and restored 👍👍. Unfortunately, here in Austria we only exchange everything.
They sure don't like cleaning the metal surfaces before welding. I don't think I saw them V out the crack and now they supposedly made it stronger so they can overload the trucks even more .
They indeed didn't V out the crack. However, they gauged it out slightly (10:47).
That is the way that they work.
I wonder how many of the "experts" commenting here have actually done anything remotely like this job. Some of you disrespect these skillful people, you think they do this stuff just for fun and not a purpose. Perfection is great for those who can afford it, but "needs must" can also work good enough.
This is the reality. Obviously that "facility" does a decent job, otherwise they'd not be able to afford their (significant, over there) equipment capital investment. WHEN (not "if") the wheels fall of in the West, we'll be in a far worse predicament since we have neither the skills nor (in general) work ethic of those we currently look down on.
Should have drilled a hole at the end of the crack to prevent the crack from spreading further !
didn't clean before welding. all that oil and paint can't make for a good weld!
4:07 The best thing about grease welds is they don't squeak when they fail.
In 1980 I was friends with a Grumman Aircraft engineer. He told a story, they got a hold of some other countries helicopter engine, they tore it apart and analyzed everything, including the alloy. Turns out, still recovering in a post WW2 economy, they were using pots and pans as a source for metal. I'm reminded of that here, because I believe this metal fails for a reason and the repairs just make everything worse. Yikes.
The problem is that all the metal around the crack will also be fatigued. I guess if you have no other choice you do what you do.
It’s quite difficult to properly weld these metals. Without proper prep and heating the weld is likely to break soon. The weld metal is a bit stronger than the stuff to the sides so stress is going to concentrate there first and bust again.
they only do it for youtub
What grinds my gears (pun intended) is why they grind AFTER the welding? There's no sense doing that, it won't be any more beautiful.
@@FraLin Indeed! Its like those videos where they weld crankshafts or axle shafts....they know us very well..! They know we will click and comment a lot about how stupid they are ... At the end of the week they go to their Paypall and collect the sweet dollars that our stupidity gave them. 😂😂😂😂
@@henryrollins9177 been saying this for a while. they probably make more on this video, than shop makes all month.
Customer states they hit a pothole while driving......😮
we need a crossover channel
They never cleaned the surfaces of anything to allow the stick weld to fully bond. There was grease everywhere.
Nor heated the cast iron before welding, removed the rust or drilled a hole at the end of at the end of the crack. I realize they're operating on less than a shoestring but science cannot be ignored.

They may not need them, for another truck
2 questions, why did they weld the temporary cover plate on and why didnt they refit the mounting blocks they cut off
The axle may be going on a different truck?
Because they fitted the axle inverted , follow the plot !
The reinforcement is excellent. The quality of weld depends on the quality of the machine. Improper maintenance.

These guys do really good welding runs probably better than modern automated welding. They keep 1950s/60s Tata trucks running what with this and casting, vulcanised etc etc. They clearly have workshops equipped with big and smalls lathes, drilling and milling machines etc etc.Gas and traditional electric arc welding equipment etc. Once upon a time most items on a truck or automobile were removed and reconned But more and more items are sealed. 50 plus years ago when I started to drive every item on my Ford Thames camping van had a grease nipple or an oiling point. The only sealed items were the front shock absorbers!
It's filmed in Pakistan. NO 1 use tata in there
I have a Degree in Mechanical Engineering and in Metallurgy and 40 years work experience , the welding will not last very long ! But it is a valiant but amateurish effort with limited knowledge and resources .
Muito bem feito parabéns pelo seu trabalho ❤
HAT ABOUT THE MOUNTS HE CUT OFF WITH A TORCH?
What type of welding rods do they use
Great vidio,,,, 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
perfect workers, prima, gratulation chief for these men !!!😊😊😊😊
From the look of their workshop, they have specialist machines to do this job, implying that they only repair split axles. Presumably when the truck is rebuilt, either the owner learns from his mistake and doesn't overload it again and therefore the axle doesn't split again, or it does split and he thinks 'I'm not taking it back to that lot again.'
That was magnificent!
those diffs break because they don't run a carrier in that position.....put a carrier in there without gears and it will survive
I know what a carrier is, where would you fit it?
Respect to them - we are all just spoilt and have forgot how things are made
Not properly welded, not properly preheated, ignored alignment, resulted weak joint
none of these guys ever seem to grind the weld area clean, they just let it rip, dirt and all.
incredible job!
Complimenti maestro.
It broke because they're using the axle without a center section. It's not meant to be used like that.
It’s puzzling why they’re adding that reinforcement strip. The stress flows along the sides, so anything on top is useless.
Nice prep with a disc grinder before putting it in the press would have been my approach , decent full penetration weld . Throw in a back weld on the inside then a small plate across the top there'd be no need to cut off the lugs . Normally I'm full of admiration for these guys but this one was pretty rough
They don't understand that the 3rd member needs to be bolted to the housing for strength. They can use 5/8 thick steel plate cover and bolt it to the housing in place of the differential.
That would make a lot of sense, but they want to work on it again on the way back :D
That repair would work so much better and last so much longer if it were cleaned, gouge grinding a v in the material, and preheated with a torch before welding. That repair will probably last a very short time and break right at the the weld joint where the weld meet the original material. I suppose they aren't paid for quality repairs just get it done. Sadly it wouldn't take that much time to it better. They get it done though by putting that extra cross support. Amazing.
Thanks

Can't watch. They didn't even clean area around tear, oil and grease in welds it will blow apart quickly. Cleaning area on broken parts is very cheap and will strengthen bond. If you want learn how NOT to weld, this is the video for you. Without so much as a wire brushing to knock off all that dirt, the guy jumps in stick welding! He didn’t even gouge a V in the crack to get the weld material to penetrate into the crack! He just laid a bead weld on top! I have never seen anyone make every possible mistake in trying to do a weld repair. Disgraceful!

You'd think that with all the metal work they do they would make themselves some steel toed boots.
now we can overload the truck 3 times as much now
Are you kidding me? This will break again and will be back in the shop the next day. The plate does absolutely nothing. There is no cleaning before welding. There is no pre-heating... Nothing... I just hope this repair does not cause someone to die.

I think it’s brilliant what they do compared to our throw away society even if it is only for camera, what no safety boots.
I have often thought how inadequate the dif' Axel housing is and why a thicker gauge of steel is not used. This is shown here. Overloading surely? should not make this fail as seen. ?
